Parental incarceration has the potential to drastically affect the social, behavioral, and physical lives of children. Such negative impacts include prenatal and chronic health conditions, behavioral and mental health issues, developmental delays, juvenile and criminal legal system involvement, and overall declines in well-being. These damaging outcomes occur for babies delivered during their mothers’ incarceration with negative lingering effects seen throughout the lifespan. Due to the stigmatization of incarceration, these children may experience bullying, engage in isolating behaviors, and struggle within the school, which may lead to the school-to-prison pipeline. Grief can encompass many types of loss, such as losing a job, moving to a new state, or changing careers, and it can affect socioemotional, behavioral, and physical aspects of daily living (Brenn et al., 2020; Favazza & Munson, 2010). Previous research has shown that the process of grief is largely misunderstood in the United States, and misconceptions of the grief and loss process can lead to perpetuated incorrect beliefs, maladaptive coping, and incorrect medical treatment (McLean et al., 2022; Sawyer et al., 2021). The project reflects the most current standards including the Washington State Environmental Education Guidelines and Essential Academic Learning Requirements, as well as the Family and Consumer Science National Standards. This paper presents curriculum guidelines prepared for the revised family life program at Wilson Junior High School in Yakima, Washington. The guidelines were designed for teaching a course in Teen Living to all eighth grade students, girls for two tri-mesters and boys for one tri-mester. Teen Living precedes a course in Family Living open to all ninth grade students on an elective basis. Family Living will be taught on a coeducational basis beginning with the 1972-73 school year.

It was the purpose of this project (1) to develop a course of study incorporating the use of programmed instruction and small group discussion in a classroom situation, (2) to compare the progress of the class using the programmed instruction with a control class using the same unit plan but without programming, and (3) to draw conclusions as to the feasibility of using programmed instruction in teaching personal and family relationships at the ninth grade level.
