Why should family planning be taught to slow learners at the junior high school level? This question can be answered only by those who are aware of the problems of overpopulation and characteristics of slow learners that directly influence childbearing. Population education, which is being promoted by persons alarmed by rapid population expansion, is an area in which a great many subject matter fields can share responsibility. It appears that home economics can make a unique contribution through teaching family planning.

Curriculum Guidelines For Teaching Family Life Education To Girls And Boys Of Junior High School Age, Willa Dene Powell

This paper presents curriculum guidelines prepared for the revised family life program at Wilson Junior High School in Yakima, Washington. The guidelines were designed for teaching a course in Teen Living to all eighth grade students, girls for two tri-mesters and boys for one tri-mester. Teen Living precedes a course in Family Living open to all ninth grade students on an elective basis. Family Living will be taught on a coeducational basis beginning with the 1972-73 school year.

The study of task identification in clothing; apparel; and textile services presents statistical correlations of task frequencies obtained by questionnaire in six task clusters for the occupations of fabric specialist; tailor; alternation specialist; dry cleaner; launderer; and clothing apparel and textile service occupations. One-way matrices present; for each occupation; task clusters and tasks within each cluster arranged vertically in descending order of overall mean frequency of performance. A two-way matrix correlates task information for all six occupations; with occupations arranged horizontally and task clusters and individual tasks within each cluster arranged vertically in descending order of commonality of performance as …

The purpose of this study is to examine some of the factors that motivate the nonprofessional (nutrition aide) in the West Virginia University Cooperative Extension Service. Certain attitudes expressed by the nonprofessional concerning job satisfaction may provide implications for supervision. Effective human relations play a major role in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. If the supervisor can understand the job needs and job expectations of the Nutrition Aide, he or she will be better able to help the Aide develop into a more effective and productive employee.

The primary purpose of the study was to compare opinions of high school male students with those of young single men concerning curriculum for Bachelor Living, a home economics course for boys-only, offered for the first time in the fall of 1972 in the three public high schools in Waterloo, Iowa. Participants in the study were 108 high school seniors, pre-registered for the course, and 25 young single men from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area. The first objective of this study was to investigate the adjustment of women during pregnancy through various indices, namely: level of anxiety, attitudes to pregnancy, and perception of body-image boundaries, and to investigate the relationship among these indices. A second objective was to determine if a significant rank order of values inferred through clothing exists among pregnant women, and to relate these values to the measures of adjustment. The comparison of women by trimester and gravidity on the measures of adjustment and the inferred values, was a third objective.

Recent nutritional surveys suggest that diets in the United States are often inadequate in one or more nutrients. In the West Virginia Nutrition Survey, 1969, unacceptable nutrient levels were most prevalent in children under seventeen years of age. Preliminary biochemical data resulting from the survey suggest that iron, vitamin A, and ascorbic acid are inadequately consumed. School lunches, as defined by the National School Lunch Program, are supposed to contribute a significant portion of the nutrients required daily by children.

The primary purpose of the study was to determine whether video tape demonstrations can be used effectively in teaching basic yeast bread knowledge and laboratory preparation activities that require accuracy and skill in obtaining a standard yeast bread product. The population of the study consisted of thirty-eight Home Economics II students in the Cedar Falls High School. Two classes, comparable in intelligence quotient range, mean, and standard deviation, were selected to serve as the experimental and control groups for the study. The Home Economics Program of Intermountain School in Brigham City, Utah was studied by a survey of graduates of the program of the year 1968. Research data was obtained from two sources: (1) a questionnaire to students who had graduated from the Home Economics Programs of Intermountain School in Brigham City in the year 1968, and (2) a questionnaire to employers of these students.
