Quicksand Craft Center: Documentation & Analysis Of A Handweaving Program In Vest, Kentucky, Deborah Champion

Data on the handweaving program at the Quicksand Craft Center in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky were compiled and analyzed. Four areas--history of the craft program, business organization and financial structure, weave patterns of goods woven and sold by the craft center, and weavers employed in the program --were examined to assess the success of the program in the local community. Factors in the four areas examined contributed to the success of the program. The benevolence, perseverance, and co-operation of the founders, directors and community members involved with the craft center have been largely responsible for the continued success …

Earth Sheltered Housing In Warren County, Kentucky: Description Of Housing Units & Determinants Of Residents' Satisfaction, Peggy Wallace

The known population of earth sheltered houses in Warren County, Kentucky were studied (a) to document building materials and techniques utilized, (b) to describe the residents demographically and document their attitudes regarding satisfaction with earth sheltered housing, and (c) to determine reasons for building and resources utilized in financing and planning, as well as problems encountered in regard to the earth sheltered house.

Data on 21 housing units were collected through personal interviews. Data analysis was accomplished using contingency tables, chi-squares, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression.

Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed. Based on the need for a food manual for the introductory food course at Western Kentucky University, several .manuals from other sources were reviewed. None was found which met the need. the Food Science course, so it was decided that a manual would be developed at Western.

The purpose of the manual was to incorporate experiences which could meet the needs of any student taking the course either as an elective or as a program requirement. One dressmaker, Mrs. A. H. Taylor of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was studied in order to draw attention to the role of the dressmaker in American fashion. A biography of Mrs. A. H. Taylor and the business history were compiled; available designs were analyzed in relation to current fashion; and an investigation of the business organization was made. It was found that the dressmaking establishment played an important role in the lives of women of that time period. Fashionable custom fit clothing was made available to local residents and to mail-order customers. The establishment was one of the few businesses which …

Problems Of Clothing Elementary School Age Children In Families Of Low- And Middle-Socioeconomic Status In Muhlenberg County, Kentucky: Comparisons And Recommendations, Kay Grise

The study was designed to determine the problems that low and middle socioeconomic status families have in clothing their elementary school-age children. Comparisons were made of the consumer buying attitudes and practices of mothers of elementary school-age children from middle-and low-socioeconomic status families in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Differences between the groups were measured on a 92- item Likert scale questionnaire on the variables-planned buying, appropriateness, conformity, labeling, faulty merchandise, care, serviceability, comfort, and versatility. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences. The middle socioeconomic group indicated a more knowledgeable attitude on all the scales. Data from personal …
