Money Supply, Inflation And The Nigerian Economy, Paul A. Ogwuma Sep 1996

Money Supply, Inflation And The Nigerian Economy, Paul A. Ogwuma

Bullion

Experience in many countries, including Nigeria, show that fiscal policies, in particular, intended primarily to stimulate output growth and enhance real income often end up as a major source of financial imbalances and macro-economic instability. The accompanying high inflation has critical allocative and distributional implications that can be detrimental to the growth process. It is against this background that, this short paper attempts, to identify the relationship between monetary growth and inflationary developments in Nigeria and the implications for economic growth. Following this Introduction, Thus, the challenge of maintaining monetary stability has often been a difficult one, the world over, …

A Study Of Defense Logistics Agency Inventory Classifications: Application Of Inventory Control Methods To Reduce Total Variable Cost And Stockage Levels, Wayne C. Goulet, Michael L. Rollman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the financial impact of applying a single inventory requirements model to three separate classes of inventory at the Defense Logistics Agency's (DLA) Defense Supply Center-Columbus (DSCC) commodity management facility. DLA' 5 blanket application of its variation of the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) requirements model may not be appropriate for all levels of demand, possibly suboptimizing DLA's desire to minimize inventory costs while still providing an appropriate level of customer service. Simulation analyses of the DLA EOQ requirements model, the Silver-Meal heuristic, and Periodic Order Quantity models were conducted to examine which dynamic lot-sizing model is more effective …

Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang Mar 1996

Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 1991, IBM San Jose decided to produce and sell magnetic heads for computer disk drives on the open market to original equipment manufacturers. However, as IBM's wafer fabrication facility increased the number of products it manufactured, its manufacturing cycle time lengthened. Since cycle time is important in competing in the open market, IBM San Jose formed a study team (in cooperation with UCLA) to examine the wafer fab and to develop ways to reduce cycle time. The team designed a new production control system and proposed new performance measures for operators and engineers. IBM implemented the new production control …

Requirement For C-130 Aircraft In The Intratheater Korean Scenario, Philip B. Oglesby Mar 1996

Requirement For C-130 Aircraft In The Intratheater Korean Scenario, Philip B. Oglesby

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to provide a timely and reasonably accurate methodology for determining C-130 intratheater airlift requirements, this research concentrated on a rough-cut capacity approach using a straight forward linear programming spreadsheet model. To provide more detailed analysis, a more sophisticated linear program was investigated. Specifically, the spreadsheet model calculated the minimum number of C-130s required to carry required cargo, passenger, and aeromedical loads based on user-defined daily requirements. For a given scenario, inputs include the daily requirements and the expected capacity for C-130 aircraft, trucks, and 22-car trains. Included in the capacity inputs are the number of daily cycles …

Modeling Diminishing Marginal Returns: An Application To The Aircraft Availability Model, Wayne L. Zorn Mar 1996

Modeling Diminishing Marginal Returns: An Application To The Aircraft Availability Model, Wayne L. Zorn

Theses and Dissertations

The Aircraft Availability Model (AAM) provides the Air Force with a worldwide peacetime requirement for reparable spare parts. This research models AAM methodology as it relates to the concept of diminishing marginal returns in resource application. Three separate modeling techniques are investigated with the goal of reformulating the AAM as a mathematical programming model that provides a comparable solution and a capable tool for the conduct of sensitivity analysis. The general formulations presented here are continuous non-linear, continuous linear, and piecewise linear discrete/continuous models. Two formulations of the piecewise linear discrete/continuous model are presented. The piecewise linear model based on …

The Effect Of Substrate-Enriched And Substrate-Impoverished Housing Environments On The Diversity Of Behaviour In Pigs, Marie Haskell, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence Jan 1996

The Effect Of Substrate-Enriched And Substrate-Impoverished Housing Environments On The Diversity Of Behaviour In Pigs, Marie Haskell, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

In intensive farming situations, growing animals are housed in relatively barren environments. The lack of opportunity to perform substrate-interactive and manipulative behaviour patterns may affect the expression and organization of these behaviours. However, making direct comparisons of the behaviour expressed in environments of differing physical complexity is difficult. In this experiment a relative diversity index was used to compare the behavioural repertoires of pigs housed in two different environments for a period of five months. One group of pigs (substrate-enriched) had straw, forest bark and branches added to the standard pens and the other group (substrate-impoverished) did not. The pigs …

Designing, Implementing, And Measuring Return On Quality Within The Corporate Sector: A Primer, Richard A.N. Stones Jan 1996

Designing, Implementing, And Measuring Return On Quality Within The Corporate Sector: A Primer, Richard A.N. Stones

Theses

This thesis will focus on the concept of Return on Quality, which allows managers to measure their company's return on investment on quality-improvement programs. Although over 90 percent of American companies have some form of quality-improvement initiatives in place, studies have shown that as much as 66 percent of the programs implemented have failed to produce satisfactory results.

This finding does not mean that all quality programs should be scrapped. Rather, it underscores the importance of assessing the program's ability to contribute to the company's bottom line. Top financial executives should actively participate in measuring the performance of such programs …

The Warehouse Information System (Wins): An Architectural Design For An Information System Employing The World Wide Web To Enhance Foreign Military Sales (Fms) Excess Inventory Management, Chad E. Lemaire

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Government has long provided security assistance to foreign countries. Each year, billions of dollars of military hardware and equipment are sold through a process known as Foreign Military Sales (FMS). Unfortunately, most countries are now reporting that they are holding many items, sometimes billions of dollars worth, that are excess for their needs. At the same time, there are many countries in need of these items. Countries currently have two options for getting rid of the items they can write them off or try to return them. Countries encounter problems with both of these choices. Naturally, if …

Re-Engineering The Acquisition Process Of Manufactured On-Demand Only Spares, Mark E. Koesters Dec 1995

Re-Engineering The Acquisition Process Of Manufactured On-Demand Only Spares, Mark E. Koesters

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore potential alternatives to the current Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition process for low demand, high dollar value, not commercially stocked, spare parts in order to better utilize diminishing resources, reduce cycle costs, and sustain the defense industrial base. Demand for these items is insufficient to justify maintaining inventory, while the buy on-demand alternative results in long lead- times and increased costs due to the labor intensiveness of the current process, lack of willing manufacturing sources, and higher prices paid for small quantities of material. An exploratory case study method was used to …

With ongoing public scrutiny of defense system acquisitions, due to numerous program failures resulting from cost and schedule overruns, now, more than ever, cost and schedule-management competencies are critical to program success. This research examined the schedule-management competencies required of defense program managers. A schedule-management competency model was developed from a foundation of past research. The model was evaluated through a mail survey of 484 intermediate and senior level military program managers assigned to Air Force Materiel Command. The results provided by 243 respondents indicate that 25 of the 28 competencies in the model were valuable to program managers and …

An Investigation Into Aircraft Availability, Michael S. Kapitzke Sep 1995

An Investigation Into Aircraft Availability, Michael S. Kapitzke

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force currently uses an expected value model in the Aircraft Availability Model (AAM) to calculate aircraft availability. However, even with the application of Lean Logistics, the failure-demand rate and the depot repair time are not fixed and the mean value is still used in the model. This research looks at the effect of the magnitude of the variance of the distributions of failure-demand rate and depot repair time. Also, this research evaluates the effect of variable mean failure-demand rates on the variability of aircraft availability. A simulation model was developed which applied the variable failure-demand rates and depot …

Assessing The Impacts Of Lean Logistics Infrastructures On Strategic Airlift Capability, Russ C. Major Sep 1995

Assessing The Impacts Of Lean Logistics Infrastructures On Strategic Airlift Capability, Russ C. Major

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to compare two lean logistics infrastructures to See which one would provide better support for the C-5 aircraft. The level of support was defined as the average number of mission capable parts (MICAPs) created by system operation. One infrastructure had the central storage facility (CSF) located at the depot and the other had a geographically separate CSF. A computer simulation model developed by the Air Force Logistics Management Agency was run for a period of twelve years and the average number of MICAPs for each system was collected. The data was then analyzed using …

An Evaluation Of The Appropriateness Of The Defense Logistics Agency's Model Requirements Model, Harry A. Berry, Edward E. Tatge Sep 1995

An Evaluation Of The Appropriateness Of The Defense Logistics Agency's Model Requirements Model, Harry A. Berry, Edward E. Tatge

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the appropriateness of the Defense Logistics Agency's (DLA) requirements model in managing consumable support for Air Force peculiar items. Currently, DLA uses a lot sizing technique referred to as the classic Economic Order Quantity, (EOQ) model. One of the key assumptions of this model is that demand is constant and continuous. Yet with Air Force bases using a lot sizing technique to place their demands for consumable items to DLA, it is apparent that the demand pattern that DLA faces, at least for Air Force peculiar items, is not constant and continuous. This study looks at the …

Historical documents and current guidelines, policies, and regulations were researched for information on what types of humanitarian assistance the DOD provides, how the process is initiated, and who is involved in the process. Agencies outside of the military, both civilian and government, were researched to determine the extent of coordination necessary for the military to provide humanitarian assistance. A model was compiled to portray the current process and given to key …

A Performance Analysis Of The Air Force War Time Lean Logistics Pipeline, Craig S. Gaddis, David A. Haase Sep 1995

A Performance Analysis Of The Air Force War Time Lean Logistics Pipeline, Craig S. Gaddis, David A. Haase

Theses and Dissertations

Lean Logistics is an innovative proposal designed to reduce the costs associated with reparable inventory management. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether a wartime lean logistics pipeline can maintain acceptable aircraft availability rates in response to induced variations of order and ship time (OST) and flying hours for deployed forces. The Dyna-MEIRIC Version 6.4 simulation program was used to evaluate nine different factor-level combinations. The factors, OST and flying hours were varied at three different levels, low, medium, and high. Analysis of the results was accomplished using a two-factor ANOVA. The authors discovered that while increasing OST …
