The purpose of this paper is to examine the history of Theatre at the University of Texas - Pan American in the 20th Century, from its inception in the Fall of 1934 through the Summer of 2001. It is written as a series of oral interviews with two women whose tenure at The University of Texas - Pan American covers that period. See Jill Paint: An Experiment In Queer Film, Sarah M. Aubry '02 Apr 2002

See Jill Paint: An Experiment In Queer Film, Sarah M. Aubry '02

Honors Projects

My film, See Jill Paint, is an exploration of the possibilities for non-oppressive, nonviolent objectification. I started with a strong desire to focus a short movie around the application of colorful paint to nipples and the surrounding areas; as I progressed towards that goal, I questioned how the project might correspond or conflict with the radical gender politics that I value. In sexist objectification, people (mostly women) are perceived as being only visual objects at the expense of their subjectivity. I think it is possible to draw attention to bodies as objects and simultaneously affirm the complexity of the embodied …

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins Apr 2002

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Writing in the 1960s and early 1970s, Christian Metz's work on the cinema favoured systematic exactitude, and was concerned with uprooting film theory from what he saw as the generalized approach of the early twentieth century (Andrews 213). Metz thought that a more scientific approach to the cinema was to be found with the question of language, and although this question was metaphorically present since the 1920s [1], Metz was the first to apply modern linguistic models to this problem (Guzzetti 292). What resulted was a methodology of analysis based on the formalism inherent to …

On Alan Moore And Eddie Campbell's From Hell (1996) And The Hughes Brothers' From Hell, Rodney Sharkey Apr 2002

On Alan Moore And Eddie Campbell's From Hell (1996) And The Hughes Brothers' From Hell, Rodney Sharkey

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Allen and Albert Hughes' film version of From Hell is visually striking and strong on memorable images. For those who enjoy attending films based on graphic novels they have read, the first framed shot of a London skyline beneath a scarlet sky is superbly reminiscent of the menacing and yet enticing comic world of the novel. Moreover, the film develops its theme visually as well as narratively; the impulse behind the ripper murders is chillingly realized in some ensemble scenes at the Royal College of Physicians and police barracks where single female victims are counter-pointed against a metaphorical …

Dancing For The Actor: A Proposal For Actor Training, Anne Marie Gay-Baradic Mar 2002

Dancing For The Actor: A Proposal For Actor Training, Anne Marie Gay-Baradic

Theses

Many college and universities across the United States offer programs in theater and dance. Training often exists to facilitate the actor or the dancer in becoming separate participants in a similar art. For the college actor, movement training typically incorporates traditional approaches as developed by Matthias Alexander, Tadashi Suzuki, or Sanford Meisener. Although these lessons in movement training hold merit, alternative strategies exist. The development of the Dancing/or the Actor program utilizes the principles of dance as the primary tools in actor movement training. By experiencing the components, theories, and techniques of dance, the college actor will focus on physical …

The Mikado, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Feb 2002

The Mikado, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2001-2002 Season

Since its premiere in 1885 at the Savoy Theatre in London, The Mikado (or The Town of Titipu) has become one of the most-performed pieces of musical theatre in history. As with many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s productions, the show satirizes aspects of Victorian Britain’s politics and aristocracy; in The Mikado, however, the duo cleverly cloaked these criticisms behind a charming story set not in Britain, but in exotic Japan. Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (the Japanese emperor), has fled in disguise to avoid marrying a much older suitor, and to find and marry his own beloved, the …
