Achieving Flow In Theatre Performance, Lynn Marie Boianelli
Achieving Flow In Theatre Performance, Lynn Marie Boianelli
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the idea of "flow," the state of optimal experience, and determines how it relates to theatrical performance. Using the methodology presented in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's FLOW: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, I examine the rehearsal and performance processes of theatre in terms of the steps needed to reach a state of optimal experience. I specifically look at the issues of repeatability (reaching the state of flow night after night), consciousness (awareness), self-consciousness and concentration. In addition, I discuss options performers have for receiving feedback as theorized in the works of Anne Bogart, Constantin Stanislavski, David Mamet and interviews …

John Millington Synge And The Irish Women's Suffrage Movement, Nicholas A. Ewen
John Millington Synge And The Irish Women's Suffrage Movement, Nicholas A. Ewen
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
John Millington Synge is considered to be among the greatest playwrights of the English language. During his lifetime, however, his plays caused controversy and even riots. Of particular interest is the fact that much of the controversy surrounded Synge's portrayal of Irish women. Because of the radical Irish nationalism that developed in the early 20 th century, much of Synge's work has been interpreted in light of this movement. This thesis, however, explores the theory that Synge was more closely connected with an another movement that was taking place in the early 1900's: women's suffrage. His sympathies for the enfranchisement …

Pretend Play At Home: Creating An Educationally Enriched Environment For Emergent Literacy Among Preschool-Aged Children, Kelly King Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will illustrate how pretend play can be used in the home for educational purposes. The major emphasis of the work will be emergent literacy, however, application principles can be applied in all subject areas. Parents who desire to expand their child's literacy skills while exposing the child to an arts enriched home environment need ideas and tools developed with supportive research to strengthen and focus their efforts. These tools will greatly expand parental resources by offering several principles as a guide for adapting existing classroom materials for home use. The following Seven Components form the core foundation for …

Jesus Christ Superstar, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
Jesus Christ Superstar, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2004-2005 Season
Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of biblical Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. A rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical has no spoken dialogue and is sometimes considered a modern rock-opera. Loosely based on the Gospels, Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel, and the leadership of Rome. Special attention is played to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. The musical is unique among biblical retellings in that it focuses on both Judas’ struggle …

A Pastiche Of Hope: Ethnography, Community, And Reconstructive Politics In The Performance Of Interview Texts, George Potter
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past fifteen years, the performance of interviews has become a pronounced theatric form, ranging from Sam Woodhouse's Nuevo California to Leigh Fondakowski's I Think I Like Girls and even, some would argue, to the postmodem deconstructions of race and ethnography found in much of Culture Clash's work. Despite all of this, Smith's Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues, and the Tectonic Theater's The Laramie Project remain the three interview-based plays that still receive the most attention, both through productions and academic discourse. Likewise, although not as widely discussed, Smith's newest interview-based work, House Arrest, provides …

The Women Of Lockerbie, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2004-2005 Season
A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son's remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane's wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim's families. The Women of Lockerbie is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely …

Theatrical Pedagogy And Interactive Service, Jillian Campana
Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications
Students in a University of Montana Drama class create dramatic programs for K- 12 classrooms as part of their service learning. An interactive, performance-based lesson on the parts of speech created for fourth graders is offered as an example of how theatre can be used to teach discrete academic or social subjects. As the university students gain valuable information about drama and pedagogy from the fourth graders, they learn a valuable lesson themselves: they are not the only ones providing a service.
