Misalliance Scenic Design, Joseph W. Shoup
Honors Theses
As scenic designer for George Bernard Shaw's Misalliance, put on by the WMU department of theatre, I feel ready to graduate. I have gained deeper insight into the design process, and through a large quantity of research, preparation, and hard work, have accomplished a set that I can be proud of. I have also been awakened to a fashion of architecture that has become my favorite style.

Synopsis: The Dark Castle highlights the journey of a handsome, but not-so-bright, young man, named Dimwit, on his way to save the downtrodden duchess Lumina, who is caught in the clutches of her evil uncle, the Baron. Lumina refuses to give up hope that one day a suitor may overcome the impossible tasks her uncle has set forth and rescue her. Even as Lumina's light begins to fade, her ladies-in-waiting--Lady Nozzle, Lady Ogle, and Lady Murmer--stay faithfully by her side. Inspired by the …
The Phenomenology Of Nonidentity And Theatrical Presence In M. Butterfly, William S. Haney Ii
The Phenomenology Of Nonidentity And Theatrical Presence In M. Butterfly, William S. Haney Ii
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
David Henry Hwang’s postmodernist play M. Butterfly, abounds with alienation devices for deconstructing the notion of a unified subject. This essay, however, seeks to challenge the assumed poststructuralist vantage-point that the self and the metaphysics of presence are illusory by exploring what holds the play's identities together as dynamic matrices that function coherently within their discursive contexts. How tenable is the constructivist claim that our shifting subject positions designated by power relations are self-sustaining, that the self does not in fact extend beyond the material tokens of narrative conventions and discursive fields? Even if performers and audience can shift …

Il Y A L'Autre Dans Le Je(U) : Le Monologue Chez Brian Friel, Noel Fitzpatrick
Conference papers
This conference paper (in French) explores the construction of interlocution in the monologues of Brian Friel's theatre. It proposes a novel means of analysis of the monologue by mobilising key developments in French pragmatic linguistic analysis of I and You and interlocution.

Rape’S Metatheatrical Return: Rehearsing Sexual Violence Among The Early Moderns, Kim Solga
Rape’S Metatheatrical Return: Rehearsing Sexual Violence Among The Early Moderns, Kim Solga
Department of English Publications
What happens when theatre crosses the line, risks danger in the real? This paper explores the pernicious theatricalization of sexual violence in early modern England, its trouble-making uptake in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, and Julie Taymor's contemporary response in her 1999 film version of the play. Along the way the article probes a handful of questions about theatre's social efficacy: what are the consequences of understanding theatre as a potentially malevolent form of public art and expression? How do we account for those moments when theatre poses genuine risk? And, more importantly, how do we build a response to, an ethics …

The Archive And The Repertoire: Performing Cultural Memory In The Americas (Book Review), Claudia Ferman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
