Stories For Today: A Contemporary Artist Brings New Life To A Moribund Indonesian Theatre Genre, Margaret Chan
Stories For Today: A Contemporary Artist Brings New Life To A Moribund Indonesian Theatre Genre, Margaret Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Dani Iswardana is single-minded about his mission to inject new life into wayang beber, perhaps the oldest form of Indonesian narrative theatre, but now described as a dying art. The intensity of his purpose buoys Dani through long stretches of painting when food is forgotten and his work, fuelled by coffee and cigarettes, is all that he cares for. However Dani has gone for years without producing anything, because he will work only when the creative spirit possesses him. Painting for money means nothing to him, and the everyday demands of making a living have no place in his creative …

2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology
In 1998 Marianne Weems and The Builders Association, in collaboration with the architects/media artists Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, presented JET LAG, a cross-media project that was ahead of its time. JET LAG is based on two overlapping true stories about eccentric individuals who manipulated time and space, turning their travels into a new kind of escape. In 1969 an ambitious sailor set out on a round-the-world sailboat race only to discover that he could “win” by simply sending radio reports of his false travel times while sailing in circles off the coast of South America. Then, over the course …

Shanghai Quartet With Guest Artist Wu Man, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology
Does Montclair State’s resident string quartet ever rest on its laurels? Banish the thought. The Shanghai Quartet and celebrated pipa virtuoso Wu Man perform the world premiere of Lei Liang’s Five Seasons, commissioned by the Quartet. The program also includes Beethoven’s Quartet op. 18, no. 3; Schumann’s Quartet op. 41, no.1; and Wang Huiran’s “Dance of the Yi People,” performed on the pipa.

Everywhere Is The Best Seat: Disembodied Instruments, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology
This 60-minute performance set within Christopher Janney’s 36-column sound and light installation Everywhere Is the Best Seat will be a unique experiment in live and MIDI-triggered sounds. Moving from environmental music to R&B and jazz, Janney and friends create an immersive musical experience, exploring the “hidden music” of sound as part of and detached from the instruments and performers who make them. Special guests include Dave Revels and Jimmy Hayes of The Persuasions, Stan Strickland, Wes Wirth, Jerry Leake, and Eddie Grenga.

What makes a “new classical” band stand out? C omposition chops and entrepreneurial hustle. Missy Mazzoli’s all-female quintet Victoire personifies a dreamy post-rock sensibility. William Brittelle’s Television Landscape embraces a big-band sonic eclecticism. And the aggressively creative NOW Ensemble, featuring compositions by Judd Greenstein, defines 21st-century chamber music. These bands have their act together!

The Roads Are Bumpy Ones: A Study Of Body Image Through Abstract Performance, Alexis Goldstein
The Roads Are Bumpy Ones: A Study Of Body Image Through Abstract Performance, Alexis Goldstein
Theses and Dissertations
An overwhelming number of contemporary adolescents struggle with difficult issues. Many of these problems are socially related whereas others can be directly related to the degradation of the family unit. Among the most damaging of issues is distorted body image, which infect youth, often causing them to communicate aggressively, and even landing them in compromising situations. I have sought to challenge my students to redefine themselves through expressive movement and the creation of abstract rhythmic sounds. In teaching these techniques, I have given my former students the means to combat negative thoughts and actions, as well as an excellent tool …
A Midsummer Night's Dream On The Radio: Technology In Voice And Speech, David Becker
A Midsummer Night's Dream On The Radio: Technology In Voice And Speech, David Becker
Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in sound technology have had significant implications for the teaching of voice and speech that are only now becoming apparent. As more students become “plugged in” it becomes more difficult, both for the instructor and the student, to communicate, let alone find a voice. We are becoming increasingly addicted to communicating through our devices, rather than through the traditional and accepted modes of the past: using the human voice. In light of these rapid and various new developments, voice training, especially at the introductory level, needs to be examined anew. A number of traditional approaches and teaching methods …

Don't Dress For Dinner, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2010 Summer Theatre
Don’t Dress For Dinner centers around Bernard and Jacqueline, a not-so-happily married couple, both of whom are having extramarital affairs. As Jacqueline prepares to go out of town to visit her mother, Bernard invites his mistress and Robert, his best friend (and also Jacqueline’s lover, unbeknownst to Bernard), over for the weekend. He’s even hired a Cordon Bleu chef to cater the evening. Jacqueline discovers Robert is coming to town and cancels her trip, causing Bernard to panic. When Robert arrives, Bernard asks him to pretend Suzanne is Robert’s mistress. Robert mistakes the chef (Suzette), for Bernard’s mistress (Suzanne), producing …

A Descriptive Study Of A Building-Based Team Problem-Solving Process, Alexander B. Brewer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to empirically evaluate Building-Based Teams for General Education Intervention or BBT for GEI. BBT for GEI is a team problem-solving process designed to assist schools in conducting research-based interventions in the general education setting. Problem-solving teams are part of general education and provide support to students with academic or behavioral concerns by creating individualized interventions that teachers can use in the classroom. Historically, problem-solving teams’ two primary goals were to reduce referrals to special education and improve student performance on academic or behavioral concerns. This study examined the effectiveness of BBT for GEI by …
Making Connections: Improving Movement Skills By Integrating Knowledge From Dance Disciplines, Amy D. Howton
Making Connections: Improving Movement Skills By Integrating Knowledge From Dance Disciplines, Amy D. Howton
Faculty Articles
Dance specialist Rebecca Enghauser (2003) has emphasized that, in the dance class, motor learning begins when the student replicates the movements presented. Demonstration is usually a necessary accompaniment to verbal instructions, suggesting that dancers routinely engage in multiple learning styles, including visual, auditor/, and kinesthetic. Enghauser also addressed "random practice," where movement appears in different combinations that then produce better and longer-lasting skill learning. Therefore, relating similar movement from different disciplines should help produce long-term learning. The analysis required when processing these similar, although perhaps outwardly different, movements provides additional and more enduring learning opportunities. Enghauser also addressed "random practice," …
Transgenic Manipulation In Zebra Fish By Combination Of Cre-Loxp Recombinant System, Tol2 Transposon System, And Rnai Technique, Yang Bai
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overall goal of this research is to make precisely controlled transgene constructs to target genes in zebrafish and facilitate their functional studies. Many of the previous transgenic techniques (e.g. morpholino) can only produce transient gene expression or inhibition, which is not good for long-term studies. Also, transgenes that randomly integrate into the chromosomes are typically difficult to control and are poorly regulated. Thus, it would be of great benefit to develop a reversibly controlled transgenic tool to help study gene function. Here, we propose to combine three distinct techniques to generate a stable transgenic tool to facilitate gene functional …

Vaudeville: A How To Guide, Evan Anderson
Vaudeville: A How To Guide, Evan Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
At the turn of the twentieth century vaudeville was the most prevalent form of theatrical entertainment. With more than 1,500 houses across the country, vaudeville reached in excess of 30 million audience members each year. It directly led to the advent of film and radio. Yet barely one hundred years later vaudeville has been forgotten by the once loyal masses. This guide is meant to help counter vaudeville’s fall. By adding together a basic script consisting of comedy and dramatic sketches, original works and classic vaudeville acts with music and information on the how and whys of vaudeville, this guide …

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2010 Summer Theatre
An eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy …

Physicians, Society, And The Science Fiction Genre In The Film Versions Of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers: Or Doctors With A Serious Pod Complex, Brett S. Stifflemire
Theses and Dissertations
Close textual analysis of the four extant film versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers reveals that each film modifies the original story such that it reflects changing societal attitudes toward physicians and the medical profession, as well as depictions of military and government in the science fiction genre. The changing depictions of characters and events in these films respond to changes in medical history, social history, and the science fiction genre across five decades. Each film reflects the contemporary anxieties of its time and the perceived ability of physicians to relieve those anxieties. Doctors are important semantic elements of …

Monstrous!: Actors, Audiences, Inmates, And The Politics Of Reading Shakespeare, Matt Kozusko
Monstrous!: Actors, Audiences, Inmates, And The Politics Of Reading Shakespeare, Matt Kozusko
English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications
This essay considers the use of Shakespeare as marker of authenticity and as a therapeutic space for performers and audiences across a number of genres, from professional actors in training literature to prison inmates in radio and film documentaries. It argues that in the wake of recent academic trends—the critique of "Shakespeare" as an author figure; the privileging of the text as a source of multiple, potentially conflicting readings—Shakespeare's function as cultural capital has shifted sites, from "Shakespeare" to the playtexts themselves.
