A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall May 2012

A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the distinction between the scenic design of A Streetcar Named Desire’s original Broadway production and 1951 film. Using Streetcar as a case study, I evaluated the differences in the choices made in the scenography of the two mediums as a way to evaluate whether there are inherent differences between theatre and film. I examined the scripts of both mediums and analyzed how the story was transposed and how that transposition affected the choices made by the director and designer in the making of the film.

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo May 2012

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo

Honors Scholar Theses

After studying Commedia Dell'arte with world renowned maestro, Antonio Fava, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, I returned to the States and continued to develop my craft by teaching others and creating a self-produced Commedia Dell'arte show. Using Fava's training from the month-long course in Italy, I used the foundation of the traditional Commedia Dell'arte characters, their physicality, and the stock story-lines to build my own one-woman comical performance that was completely relevant to the setting. The show was completely self-written and directed, and was performed using sculpted Commedia Dell'arte masks from Bart Roccoberton and his puppetry students.

Shanghai Quartet, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Ever since Franz Josef Haydn developed the modern version of a string quartet in the mid-18th century, the most daring and innovative practitioners of the art form has to be Béla Bartók. In this special double program, the Shanghai Quartet flexes its musical muscles by performing the complete Bartók quartet cycle. Written over a 30-year span, Bartók’s six quartets stand as a sonic biography of one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic and essential composers.

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz May 2012

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz

Theses and Dissertations

There are many excellent books detailing methods to help actors develop their voices, but not much has been published about vocal coaching itself, apart from the definitive guide to Vocal Coaching Nan-Withers Wilson’s book Vocal Direction for the Theatre, and the highly informative publication How to Use a Vocal Coach: A Practical Guide for Directors prepared by Nancy Houfek, for the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association (VASTA). This thesis documents my personal journey into the world of vocal coaching in five productions. Specifically, I explore the differences between vocal coaching in the university setting versus the professional theatre setting. I …

Entre El Público Y Poeta En Nueva York De Federico García Lorca, Francisco Acuyo Donaire

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

El Público: Surrealismo Y Metateatro Como Vías De Expresión De Un Drama Interno, Ana Garriga Espino May 2012

El Público: Surrealismo Y Metateatro Como Vías De Expresión De Un Drama Interno, Ana Garriga Espino

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Espectaculo Y Compromiso: Estrategias Vanguardistas En César Vallejo Y Carlos Oquendo De Amat, Damaris Puñales-Alpizar

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Jules Laforgue, Tristan Tzara, Carmelo Bene: La Vanguardia Que No Cesa, Alfredo Rodríguez López-Vázquez May 2012

Jules Laforgue, Tristan Tzara, Carmelo Bene: La Vanguardia Que No Cesa, Alfredo Rodríguez López-Vázquez

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Rhythm Of My Sole, Jessica Williams May 2012

Rhythm Of My Sole, Jessica Williams

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Tap dancing was one of the first dance forms created here in America. It is a perfect representation of the mosaic that is America because tap dancing is the fusion of dances brought to this country by slaves and immigrants. This fusion has been passed down from generation to generation and evolves every day. When it was created, it was used in celebrations; later it was used in musicals and variety shows to entertain; now it stands on its own in concert setting and conveys stories, shows emotions, and still entertains.

I have created four tap dances; each is different …

My Dear Watson: A Musical Interpretation Of Sherlock Holmes’S Friendship With Dr. John Watson, Jami-Leigh C. Bartschi May 2012

My Dear Watson: A Musical Interpretation Of Sherlock Holmes’S Friendship With Dr. John Watson, Jami-Leigh C. Bartschi

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson is complicated and certainly untraditional. Some theorize that Holmes is merely using Watson while Watson desperately seeks his affection. Others theorize that they have an unrequited homosexual relationship. However, it is Holmes’ unemotional nature paired with Watson’s fierce loyalty and admiration that creates a new and unique type of relationship. Many would define friendship as an emotional bond, but with Holmes, this is impossible. That does not mean, however, that he is incapable of deeply caring for Watson. It means that the relationship looks different than the traditional friendship. Watson and Holmes’ …

The Production Of Choreography Influenced By Works Of George Balanchine, Tiffany Guy May 2012

The Production Of Choreography Influenced By Works Of George Balanchine, Tiffany Guy

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

One of the most renowned Ballet Masters in the history of dance is George Balanchine. By studying his works and feedback from his dancers, my goal is to gain enough information to develop a two to three minute choreographed work of my own, incorporating the influence of Balanchine’s style and design. In my research, I will be examining his history and the interviews of Balanchine-influenced dancers, reflecting on personal experiences, and dissecting his choreography and elements of my own work in creating my final choreography. Within my piece, I will be manipulating various uses of rhythms, implementing Balanchine-style movements, and …

Evocative Communication: Selected Projects In Projection, Scenic, And Lighting Design, Milinda Esplin Weeks May 2012

Evocative Communication: Selected Projects In Projection, Scenic, And Lighting Design, Milinda Esplin Weeks

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

I didn’t always want to be a theatrical designer. As a child, I wanted to be a ballerina, an artist, a teacher. My answer to, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” changed ever time someone asked me the question. Though I didn’t understand it a the time, what I wanted was to affect people. I wanted my work to create emotion and thought.

I found that reaction in the theater. Here was a small circle of people who were entirely codependent upon each other to create one large piece of art, all in the hopes of …

Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll May 2012

Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Copyright law grants authors certain rights of creative control over their works. This Article argues that these rights of creative control are too strong when applied to the performing arts because they fail to take account of the mutual dependence between writers and performers to fully realize the work in performance. This failure is particularly problematic in cases in which the author of a source work, such as a play or a choreographic work, imposes content-based restrictions on how a third party may render the work in performance. This Article then explores how Congress might craft a statutory license to …

Stingray : An Exploration Into The Art And Craft Of Playwriting, Samantha Liguori May 2012

Stingray : An Exploration Into The Art And Craft Of Playwriting, Samantha Liguori

HIM 1990-2015

Cloud Nine by Carol Churchill is a good example of non-linear play structure. Episodic plays are part of an even more disjointed time structure. There are both many different locations and characters in an episodic play; it is similar to a film script for that matter. Onstage, this was a revolution; how can a person be in one city and then the next shortly after? This was the rule of continuity that episodic structure broke. Bertolt Brecht did this throughout his movement in epic theatre, and traces of this structure can also be found as early back as Medieval plays. …

A Marriage Of Realism And Expressionism: Preparing And Performing The Role Of Mrs. Zero In Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine, Rebecca Rivas May 2012

A Marriage Of Realism And Expressionism: Preparing And Performing The Role Of Mrs. Zero In Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine, Rebecca Rivas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In Elmer Rice's expressionistic play,The Adding Machine, the character of Mrs. Zero is written to forego authenticity and highlight a husband's absurd perception of his wife. The elements of expressionism in the play paint Mrs. Zero as a caricature rather than a person. In order to effectively portray this caricature, role-preparation must be rooted in realism. It is by connecting organically with Mrs. Zero's underlying truth that the portrayal of this absurd character can be made effective. Here, I attempt to find a balance between realistic role-preparation and expressionistic style of performance. My efforts are documented through journal …

...And Then, Claire An Indie-Rock Monologue; Integrating The Independent Music Scene Into American Musical Theatre, Mickey Bahr May 2012

...And Then, Claire An Indie-Rock Monologue; Integrating The Independent Music Scene Into American Musical Theatre, Mickey Bahr

HIM 1990-2015

For more than fifty years, the Independent (indie) Music Scene has existed as an evolving business model, allowing indie artists to develop a wealth of progressive musical ideas while creating a sustainable audience base. American Musical Theatre has an already-established rich history of adapting styles to fit concurrent trends in popular music while maintaining the story as the core of a show. While some indie artists (The Lisps, The Mountain Goats, Stephin Merritt, and Stew) and some musical theatre composers (David Yazbek, Doug Crossley, and Michael Friedman) have created crossover works, there is currently an overall dearth of musical theatre …

Savage In Limbo A Study In Lighting Design, Kenneth Haines May 2012

Savage In Limbo A Study In Lighting Design, Kenneth Haines

HIM 1990-2015

Designing the elements of a theatrical production is a unique and often experimental process. This process changes from show to show, and it can be difficult for a viewer to differentiate mistakes from design choices without a background in lighting. That is why it is important to take a look at the design process step by step. Two goals I strove for when designing Savage In Limbo were, how the director's concept blended with a design and if the integrity of the designer's vision was evident on stage. To explore these goals, script analysis and consideration of the director's vision …

Teen Theatre: Exploring The Role Of The Young Adult In Art And Life, Jessica J. Vaught May 2012

Teen Theatre: Exploring The Role Of The Young Adult In Art And Life, Jessica J. Vaught

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to summarize my exploration with a group of teenagers of two scripts and our experiences throughout the process. The scripts chosen fit two qualifications: I considered them to be examples of true quality in playwriting and they addressed adolescent self-identification. In rehearsals the teens and I discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each script we read and chose to perform a staged reading of the one we considered better suited for our ensemble. A discussion of my decision to direct a staged reading rather than a full-fledged production can be found in the Creative …

The footage from each camera was synced in post-production and edited down for regional broadcast and distribution. The final video includes a majority of the pieces presented during the performance on March 16, as well as brief informative interviews with members of the WKU Symphony. …

Double Take Project: Using Applied Theatre For Campus Climate Change, Christina M. Cody May 2012

Double Take Project: Using Applied Theatre For Campus Climate Change, Christina M. Cody

Honors Theses

Despite research gathered in the Campus Climate Report, I believe that it underrepresented the student experience of the social scene. The document primarily served as an identification tool for four major problems on campus: binge drinking, sexual assault, diversity, and disengagement in the classroom. Double Take Project also identifies similar issues however, this project uses theatrical techniques to gather the anecdotal reality of the student perspective. Double Take Project expands beyond the Campus Climate Report to inspire dialogue in a variety of student-to-student interactions and, more importantly, the project seeks action and solution plans.

The social scene dominates our culture …
