วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นการค้นหา ทดลอง แนวความคิดและกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ละครเวทีไทยเรื่อง “ลอดิลกล่มฟ้า” (LOR : Love, Obsession, Revenge” เพื่อจัดแสดงในประเทศแคนาดา โดยใช้รูปแบบงานวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ที่ลงมือปฏิบัติจริงในการสร้างสรรค์ละครเวที และงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพในการวิเคราะห์ผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ละครไทยสามารถสื่อสารกับผู้ชมต่างชาติได้อย่างดีและมีอัตลักษณ์ ด้วยกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ 4 ขั้นตอนคือ 1. ขั้นตอนก่อนดำเนินงานสร้าง ประกอบด้วยการกำหนดแนวคิดในการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยให้มีความสากล ด้วยการสังเคราะห์ทฤษฎีโศกนาฏกรรมของอริสโตเติลเพื่อตีความบทวรรณกรรมเรื่องลิลิตพระลอให้สื่อสารได้อย่างมีความเป็นสากล โดยเน้นแนวคิดเรื่องชะตากรรมหรือเจตจำนงเสรี การสร้างบทละครตามทฤษฎีประพันธศิลป์ และการวางแผนงานตามระบบสากล 2. ขั้นตอนการดำเนินงานสร้าง ประกอบด้วยกระบวนการซ้อมที่ใช้แนวทางการแสดงตามระเบียบวิธีว่าด้วยกรรมรูปธรรมของคอนสแตนติน สตานิสลาฟสกี ผสานเข้ากับการแสดงและนาฏลีลาการฟ้อนเจิงดาบที่มีความหมายเชิงสัญวิทยาทั้งในระดับโลกียะและโลกุตระ แนวทางการกำกับการแสดงที่มุ่งเน้นความเป็นเจ้าของผลงานของผู้กำกับการแสดงผ่านแก่นความคิด แนวคิด และการสร้างภาพบนเวที 3. ขั้นตอนการแสดง จัดแสดง เมื่อวันที่ 3 กรกฎาคม 2558 ณ โรงละครเฟย แอนด์ มิลตัน หว่อง นครแวนคูเวอร์ ประเทศแคนาดา ผู้ชมส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวต่างประเทศเข้าใจและมีอารมณ์ร่วมกับละครได้ดีด้วยแก่นความคิดที่เป็นสากล ขณะเดียวกันก็รู้สึกสัมผัสได้ถึง “ความเป็นไทย” จากทั้งรูปแบบและเนื้อหา 4. ขั้นตอนหลังดำเนินงานสร้าง ผู้จัดและผู้สนับสนุนโครงการเห็นความคุ้มค่าเนื่องจากได้เผยแพร่ศักยภาพของศิลปินยุคใหม่ของไทยสาขาศิลปะการแสดง และละครสมัยใหม่ของไทย

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การรำลิเกทางครูเด่นชัย เอนกลาภ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการรำลิเกในรูปแบบของครูเด่นชัย เอนกลาภ ซึ่งเป็นเป็นบุคคลสำคัญทางวงการลิเก ที่มีกระบวนการสืบทอดการแสดงลิเกจากครูหอมหวล นาคศิริและครูละครจากวังสวนกุหลาบ ผนวกกับประสบการณ์ในการแสดงลิเกจนกระทั่งเป็นรูปแบบการรำเฉพาะทางที่มีความงาม ประเด็นที่ศึกษาประกอบไปด้วย การรำหน้าพาทย์เพลงเสมอออกภาษา ซึ่งเป็นเพลงหน้าพาทย์ใช้ประกอบกิริยาการเดินทางของตัวละครในการแสดงลิเก จำนวน 5 เพลง ได้แก่ 1. เพลงเสมอไทย 2. เพลงเสมอพม่า 3. เพลงเสมอมอญ 4. เพลงเสมอลาว 5. เพลงเสมอเขมร นอกจากการรำเพลงเสมอออกภาษาต่าง ๆ ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาการรำที่สำคัญอีกคือการรำเข้าพระเข้านางหรือรำเกี้ยวเป็นการรำของตัวพระและตัวนางในบทรักใช้เพลงมะลิเลื้อย และการรำอวดความสามารถขี่ม้ารำทวน ที่เป็น ความถนัดเฉพาะของครูเด่นชัย เอนกลาภ จากการศึกษาผู้วิจัยพบว่า อัตลักษณ์การรำลิเกทางครูเด่นชัย เอนกลาภ นั้นมีลักษณะวิธีการปฏิบัติในรูปแบบการรำตามโครงสร้างของเพลงในลักษณะเดียวกันกับทางนาฎศิลป์ไทยแต่กระบวนท่ารำนั้นแตกต่างออกไปตามความถนัดและทักษะของผู้แสดง การใช้ศีรษะและสายตาในทางการรำลิเกนั้นพบว่ามีลักษณะการเคลื่อนที่คือการกล่อมใบหน้าและการมองที่เป็นอิสระโดยสายตาส่วนใหญ่ของการรำลิเกนั้นจะเน้นมองไปหาผู้ชมเป็นหลัก การใช้มือในการปฏิบัติท่ารำพบว่าใช้การดึงมือออกไปข้างลำตัวให้มีลักษณะท่ารำหรือการตั้งวงที่กว้างขึ้นกว่าทางนาฎศิลป์ นอกจากนั้นยังพบอีกว่าครูเด่นชัย เอนกลาภ มีจุดเด่นในเรื่องของการตั้งวงที่มีความอ่อนของนิ้วมือเป็นอย่างมากจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่ทำให้ลักษณะการตั้งวงและการใช้มือนั้นเกิดความงามเป็นรูปแบบเฉพาะทาง การใช้ลำตัวมีลักษณะการตั้งลำตัวตรง ไม่เกร็งบริเวณเอว ตั้งลำตัวตรงไม่ดันอกขึ้น การใช้เท้าพบว่ามีลักษณะสำคัญในการปฏิบัติท่ารำนั้น ยกเท้าที่สูง ยกส้นเท้าก่อนยกปลายเท้าเพื่อเป็นการทรงตัวในการวางเท้า การรำลิเกนั้นเป็นการรำแบบอิสระสามารถด้นกระบวนท่ารำขึ้นเองได้ตามภูมิปัญญาและทักษะของผู้แสดงโดยเน้นตามความนิยมผู้ชมหากผู้ชมชอบการแสดงแบบไหนลิเกก็จะแสดงแบบนั้น ขึ้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์ในขณะนั้นจึงทำให้การรำของลิเกเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะทาง และมีแนวโน้มที่จะพัฒนาต่อไปอย่างไม่หยุดยั้งแต่อยู่บนพื้นฐานหลักการรำและการแสดงที่ได้รับถ่ายทอดจากครูลิเกต่อไป

นาฏกรรมในพิธีกรรมปัญโจลมะม็วด จังหวัดสุรินทร์, พิมวลี ดีสม

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษานาฏกรรมในพิธีกรรมปัญโจลมะม็วด จังหวัดสุรินทร์ เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์และการมีส่วนร่วม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า พิธีกรรมปัญโจลมะม็วด เป็นพิธีกรรมในการรักษาโรคตามคติความเชื่อของคนกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์เขมรว่าผู้ป่วยมีสิ่งชั่วร้ายเข้าสิง จึงต้องให้มะม็วดซึ่งเป็นสตรีในสายตระกูลเท่านั้นมาทำพิธีเข้าทรงเชิญวิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์มากำจัดสิ่งชั่วร้ายนั้น พิธีมี 11 ขั้นตอน คือ 1. การปรับพื้นที่ตามฤกษ์ 2. การปลูกปะรำพิธี 3. การนำผู้ป่วยเข้าประจำที่ 4. การโหมโรงดนตรี 5. การไหว้วิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์ 6. การรำเข้าทรงของมะม็วด 7. การรำกำจัดสิ่งชั่วร้าย 8. การรำเชิญวิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์มาช่วยรักษา 9. การรำเชิญวิญญาณทั้งหมดกลับ 10. การรำเรียกขวัญผู้ป่วย 11.การรำลา นาฏกรรมในพิธีกรรมนี้ปรากฏอยู่ 3 วัตถุประสงค์ คือ 1. การรำบวงสรวง คือ การรำไหว้วิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทั้งปวง 2. การรำรักษา คือ การรำดาบเพื่อฟันสิ่งชั่วร้าย 3. การรำเฉลิมฉลอง คือ การรำเพื่อยินดีกับผู้ป่วยที่รักษาหาย ผลการวิจัยเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการศึกษาด้านนาฏยศิลป์ไทย เป็นการอนุรักษ์และสืบทอดศิลปวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นให้คงอยู่ต่อไปและยังสามารถเชื่อมโยงไปสู่กระบวนการการสร้างความสามัคคี อันนำไปสู่ความสงบสุขร่มเย็นของสังคมไทย

การแสดงในงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา, อรอุทัย นิลนาม

การแสดงในงานศิลปวัฒธรรมอุดมศึกษา เป็นวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบการแสดงในงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา โดยขอบเขตการศึกษา คือ งานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา ครั้งที่ 1 – 19 ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้เครื่องมือในการวิจัย ได้แก่ 1) การสำรวจข้อมูลเชิงเอกสาร 2) การสัมภาษณ์บุคคล กลุ่มที่ 1 ที่ปรึกษางานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา กลุ่มที่ 2 สมาชิกเครือข่ายอุดมศึกษาทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ กลุ่มที่ 3 นิสิต นักศึกษาที่ได้รวมงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา 3) ใช้อุปกรณ์เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศที่เกี่ยวข้อง 4) การลงพื้นที่ภาคสนาม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแสดงที่ปรากฏในงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษาครั้งที่ 1 – 19 ปรากฏการแสดง 5 ประเภท 23 รูปแบบการแสดง โดยการแสดงที่นำมาแสดงมากมากที่สุดถึงร้อยละ 62 ของการแสดงทั้งหมด คือการแสดงสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์พื้นบ้าน (ระบำ) โดยมีปัจจัยในการเลือกชุดการแสดง ดังนี้ 1) ความถนัด เอกลักษณ์ ทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ของแต่ละมหาวิทยาลัย 2)สถานที่จัดงานและสถานที่จัดแสดง 3) งบประมาณ ด้วยปัจจัยต่าง ๆ ส่งผลให้โดยการแสดงที่นำมาแสดงคือการแสดงสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์พื้นบ้าน (ระบำ) สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงศักยภาพในความสามารถทางด้านการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ของแต่ละสถาบันที่เข้าร่วม ที่นำเอาวิถีชีวิต ภูมิปัญญา หรือการแสดงที่เคยมีอยู่แล้วนำมาสร้างสรรค์เป็นผลงงานทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ และจากการศึกษาการจัดการการแสดงในงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา พบว่าเป็นโครงการที่ตอบสนองนโยบาย ด้านการทำนุบำรุงศิลปะและวัฒนธรรม ทำให้เกิดการรวมตัวกัน เพื่อจัดงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษา โดยผลการประเมินการจัดงานในแต่ละครั้งมีผลการประเมินด้านตัวชี้วัดในทุกด้านอยู่ในระดับ ดี – ดีมาก และงานนี้ถือเป็นงานที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรม ด้านการอนุรักษ์การแสดงนาฏยศิลป์ที่เป็นแบบแผนตามแบบกรมศิลปากร เนื่องด้วยงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมอุดมศึกษาป็นงานที่ให้ว่าที่บัณฑิตได้ฝึกฝน การสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน การจัดการการแสดง การสร้างเครือข่ายทางด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรมเพิ่มขึ้นในอนาคต เพื่อเป็นการสืบทอด อนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมไทยให้คงอยู่โดยคนรุ่นใหม่ และเป็นศูนย์รวมของบุคลากรวงการนาฏศิลป์ไทยได้พบปะแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็น เพื่อพัฒนาผลงานทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์รูปแบบต่าง ๆ ต่อไปในอนาคต

งานสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ เรื่อง พระลอ ตอน ศึกโหงพราย, สุพจน์ จูกลิ่น

การสร้างสรรค์งานนาฏยศิลป์เรื่องพระลอ ตอน “ศึกโหงพราย” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวคิดและขั้นตอนกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์การแสดงนาฏยศิลป์เรื่องพระลอ ตอน “ศึกโหงพราย”ตามแนวนิยมความเรียบง่าย และพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านการถ่ายทอดความคิดและการสร้างสรรค์ลีลาท่าทางการแสดงนาฏยศิลป์ เรื่องพระลอ ตอน “ศึกโหงพราย” โดยอาศัยขอบเขตและหลักการแนวนิยมความเรียบง่ายเพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน โดยมีขั้นตอนในการสร้างสรรค์ทั้งหมด 8 ขั้นตอน ดังนี้ 1. การกำหนดกรอบแนวคิดหลักและขอบเขตเนื้อหาบทการแสดง 2. การกำหนดรูปแบบของการแสดง 3. การนำเสนอกรอบแนวคิดและรูปแบบการแสดง 4. การเลือกสรรดนตรี 5. การคัดเลือกนักแสดง 6. การคัดสรรอุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดงและการออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย 7. การสร้างสรรค์ลีลาท่าทางและทดลองการแสดง 8. อภิปรายผลการวิจัยผลงานสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์เรื่องพระลอ ตอน “ศึกโหงพราย” ซึ่งปรากฏเป็นองค์ความรู้ในงานสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ เรื่อง พระลอ ตอน ศึกโหงพราย โดยผลของการแสดงปรากฏว่าผู้ชมสามารถรับความรู้ที่เป็นใจความสำคัญผ่านการแสดงตามรูปแบบที่ผู้สร้างสรรค์ได้เลือกใช้ และตรงตามวัตถุประสงค์ตามแนวนิยมความเรียบง่ายอีกทั้งเป็นการเผยแพร่วรรณกรรมไทย เรื่อง พระลอ ในตอนที่ยังไม่มีปรากฎเป็นงานนาฏกรรมสู่สังคมไทยอีกด้วย

วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่กับการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนานาฏศิลป์ล้านนา, เอกชัย ศรีรันดา

การศึกษาเรื่อง “วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่กับการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนานาฏศิลป์ล้านนา” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางอนุรักษ์และพัฒนาการแสดงนาฏศิลป์แบบล้านนาของวิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่ มีขอบเขตของการวิจัย คือ ศึกษารูปแบบการฟ้อนแบบนาฏศิลป์ล้านนาในสายคุ้มพระราชชายาเจ้าดารารัศมี ที่วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่ได้รับถ่ายทอด และการพัฒนาชุดการแสดงทั้ง 3 ช่วง ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2514 จนถึง พ.ศ. 2561 รวมระยะเวลา 47 ปี ด้วยการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลแล้วนำมาวิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์ข้อมูล จัดลำดับและเรียบเรียงข้อมูล และนำเสนอผลการวิจัย ผลการวิจัยพบว่า วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่เป็นสถาบันการศึกษาด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรมของชาติ เป็นแหล่งรวบรวมศิลปวัฒนธรรมพื้นเมืองประจำภาคเหนือที่ “สร้างศาสตร์แห่งศิลป์” ด้วยการดำเนินการตามวิสัยทัศน์และพันธกิจที่กำหนดเป้าหมายสำคัญใน 2 ประเด็น คือ การอนุรักษ์และพัฒนา ด้วยการการสืบสาน สร้างสรรค์ และเผยแพร่ศิลปวัฒนธรรมผ่านนโยบายการบริหารงานของผู้บริหารสถานศึกษา นโยบายการบริหารงานของผู้บริหารสถานศึกษานั้นในด้านการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนาของวิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่จะให้ความสำคัญกับการถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้นาฏศิลป์ล้านนา เริ่มต้นจากการเชิญช่างฟ้อนที่เคยอยู่ในคุ้มพระราชชายาเจ้าดารารัศมี และช่างฟ้อนที่มีความสามารถเข้ามาถ่ายทอดรูปแบบการฟ้อนรำให้กับนักเรียน นักศึกษา ครู อาจารย์ แล้วนำนาฏศิลป์ล้านนาที่ได้รับถ่ายทอดมาบรรจุไว้ในหลักสูตร ต่อมาเมื่อยุคสมัยเปลี่ยนไปคณาจารย์จึงได้มีการสร้างสรรค์นาฏศิลป์ล้านนาชุดใหม่ เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการของสังคมแล้วนำการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ล้านนาออกเผยแพร่ สู่สาธารณชนในโอกาสสำคัญ ๆ ซึ่งเป็นไปตามนโยบายการบริหารงานของผู้บริหารสถานศึกษา อีกทั้งการจัดโครงการและกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ตามที่ได้รับงบประมาณสนับสนุนจากสถาบันบัณฑิตพัฒนศิลป์ เพื่อให้ครู อาจารย์สร้างสรรค์นาฏศิลป์ล้านนาชุดใหม่ ๆ โดยผ่านกระบวนการวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ สิ่งที่สำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งคือการส่งเสริมให้นักศึกษาสร้างสรรค์นาฏศิลป์ล้านนาในรายวิชาศิลปนิพนธ์ ถือเป็นการพัฒนา ต่อยอดองค์ความรู้เดิมให้มีความแปลกใหม่ ทันสมัยเข้ากับยุคสมัย แต่ยังคงรักษาของเดิมไว้ไม่ให้สูญหาย นอกจากนี้ยังมีการนำนาฏศิลป์ล้านนาออกถ่ายทอดให้กับสถานศึกษาอื่น ๆ เพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์นาฏศิลป์ล้านนาให้คงอยู่สืบไป วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปเชียงใหม่จึงเป็นองค์กรทางด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งมีพันธกิจสำคัญอย่างยิ่งในการรักษาศิลปวัฒนธรรม เพื่อให้มีการสืบทอดต่อไปยังอนาคต ด้วยการสร้างคน สร้างศาสตร์ และบริการสังคม อีกทั้งองค์ความรู้เดิมมาพัฒนาเพื่อสนองการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างไม่หยุดยั้ง

งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาวิธีการเขียนบทละครเพลงว่าด้วยเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของจิตร ภูมิศักดิ์ โดยใช้การนำเสนอรูปแบบละครเพลง (musical theatre) และใช้วิธีการนำเสนอแบบหลายโครงเรื่อง (multiple plots) เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่าเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของจิตร ภูมิศักดิ์ ถูกผลิตขึ้นและนำไปใช้ด้วยวัตถุประสงค์ที่แตกต่างกัน การยึดติดบุคคลต้นแบบที่ผ่านการประกอบสร้างจากเรื่องเล่า อาจทำให้เกิดความแตกแยกทางความคิดในสังคมที่บานปลายสู่การใช้ความรุนแรงได้ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับการผลิตเรื่องเล่า ละครเพลง การเขียนบทละครเพลง การเขียนคำร้องในละครเพลงและวิธีการนำเสนอแบบหลายโครงเรื่อง จากนั้นจึงดำเนินการเขียนบทละครเพลงร่างที่ 1 โดยพัฒนาบทละครเพลงจากการจัดแสดงในรูปแบบการอ่าน (stage reading) แล้วนำความคิดเห็นของผู้ชมมาประมวล เพื่อพัฒนาเป็นบทละครเพลงร่างที่ 2 ก่อนนำเข้าสู่กระบวนการผลิตและจัดแสดงอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ จากการประเมินผลการวิจัยผ่านการจัดแสดงอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ ผู้วิจัยได้ข้อสรุปว่า การนำเสนอด้วยรูปแบบละครเพลงสามารถส่งเสริมการถ่ายทอดประเด็นสำคัญของเรื่องที่เต็มไปด้วยความขัดแย้งทางความคิดในประเด็นทางสังคมและการเมือง ด้วยการยกระดับประสบการณ์ทางอารมณ์ของผู้ชมควบคู่ไปกับการทำงานทางความคิด และการใช้วิธีการนำเสนอแบบหลายโครงเรื่อง โดยออกแบบปฏิสัมพันธ์ของเหตุการณ์บนโครงเรื่องตามวัตถุประสงค์ของบทละครเพลง สามารถกระตุ้นความคิดเชิงวิพากษ์ (critical thinking) ของผู้ชมให้มีต่อเรื่องราวและประเด็นสำคัญของเรื่อง และเผยให้เห็นการประกอบสร้างบุคคลต้นแบบผ่านเรื่องเล่า รวมถึงอิทธิพลชองการสืบทอดอุดมการณ์ทางการเมืองผ่านบุคคลต้นแบบ

Class/Act: Embodied Practices for Performative Pedagogy is a personal and practical exploration of embodiment’s role in higher education acting pedagogy. In my thesis, I propose that embodied acting practices rooted in phenomenology and corporeal dramaturgy surpass conventional acting curricula. Embodied training is often confused with movement curricula and is regularly considered a shallow and/or unintelligent means to approaching acting work. When James VI of Scotland and I of England proclaimed himself King of Great Britain, he proposed a merger of the English and Scottish parliaments, and he looked to Henry VIII’s Acts of Union of England and Wales (1536/43) as an example for English Scottish union under one king. On the London stage after 1603 many plays paid tribute to the new king and provided a predominantly English audience a means of accepting the not so palatable ideas of Scottish power, assimilation and unity. In Othello, Shakespeare explores the idea of monstrosity through his titular character. This paper argues that Othello exemplifies the idea that monstrosity is not an inherent evil, but rather that it is a problem of Moral Proximity. The Problem of Moral Proximity, as it is explained in the paper, is the idea that good and evil are the moderation of or corruption of neutral traits. This paper not only argues that monstrosity is one of these neutral qualities, but also explores how Iago corrupts this monstrosity to bring about Othello's downfall.

It focuses on three ancient mask traditions: pre- and early Hellenistic Greek theatre, Japanese Noh theatre, and Nigerian Egungun masquerades.
