Gender, ritual and performance in the Shona cultures of Zimbabwe, are inexorably linked. They demonstrate how the flexibility of the Shona spiritual systems offers agency to ritual leaders and practitioners. The story of Murumbi Karivara, a Shona rainmaker from the 19th Century, provides the inspirational imagery for the researcher’s Masters of Fine Arts thesis concert DE RERUM NATURA - the way things are (performed on September 2 and 3, 2018). Over the course of seven weeks, the Hope College Theatre Department produced the play Cry It Out by Molly Smith Metzler. The stage management team led each rehearsal and created rehearsal schedules and reports. This information was then synthesized and communicated with the design and production teams, then later reviewed and discussed in production meetings. As the play moved from standard rehearsals into technical rehearsals, the stage manager oversaw all the backstage crews and technicians. In performance, the stage manager called every lighting and sound cue, while keeping an open line of communication with the Assistant Stage Managers, Light Board …

There is a large lack of discussion and writing concerning the intersections of queer theory, theatre as an art form, and student direction. My thesis attempts to add to this small amount of work. Using historical evidence, I define radical queer theory and its implications for art. I contextualize my own work in the rehearsal room with the piece Screaming, Humming by Hannah Manikowski with this framework, and speak to my experience of casting and rehearsal.

Antonin Artaud, a radical theatre artist working during the first half of the 20thcentury, developed a style and philosophy of storytelling called the Theatre of Cruelty. Artaud wanted to shock his audiences into an emotional connection with the people and situations around them. Hoping to shake the audience out of their complacency by combating realism, Artaud envisioned performances that would eliminate the fourth wall and confront the audience directly. Two contemporary theatre companies, the Wooster Group and Punchdrunk,adapt Artaud’s ideas to modern storytelling practices. With the United States positioned as the leading nation in incarceration rates, the intentional use of theatre in order to achieve psychological growth and change within inmates is an invaluable asset to the healing of the imprisoned, specifically to incarcerated women who have undergone sexual trauma. Navigating prison for women is often combined with the trauma of sexual assault, as almost half the women in the nation’s jails and prisons were sexually abused prior to their imprisonment. This paper describes the common (mis)reading of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca as upholding Victorian patriarchal values and attempts to demonstrate that the novel is indeed feminist and acts as a critique and subversion of those patriarchal standards; it then examines the film and stage adaptations of Rebecca, demonstrating via comparison to the original medium that feminism has begun to affect other cultural interpretations and depictions of the narrator, Mrs. Danvers, and Rebecca herself.

Occupational Therapy | Faculty Conference Presentations

This qualitative study investigated parent and organization experiences of a sensory friendly theater program. I will report key findings including meaningful and capacity building experiences of parents of children with disabilities and theater staff. This research illustrated the potential of sensory friendly theater and organization-level occupational therapy consultation to promote community participation at population levels and build organizational capacity in the access realm.

On June 12, 2016, 49 people were killed, and 53 people were injured in a shooting at Pulse, a popular gay club in Orlando, Florida. The Pulse Nightclub shooting was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States at that time and the deadliest violent act against the LGBTQ+ community in the United States (Hancock & Haldeman, 2017; Jackson, 2017; Walter, Billard, & Murphy, 2017). The media were divided in labeling the shooting a terrorist attack or a hate crime, creating a master narrative surrounding the shooting. Transitions from the first kabuki performance abroad in Russia in 1928 to the recent performances around the world show various changes in the purpose and production of kabuki performances overseas. Kabuki has been performed as a Japanese traditional art in the U.S. for about 60 years, and the United States has seen more kabuki than any other country outside of Japan. Those tours were closely tied to national cultural policy of both Japan and the USA in the early years. The first kabuki tour to New York in 1960 helped to reestablish the U.S-Japan relationship after the war.

Theatre workers face many dangers which could impact their quality of life and ability to work. One such risk is hearing loss. Given the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss, some theatre workers may already be living with hearing loss. My purpose with this study is to discover the current conditions and attitudes toward hearing loss at Theatre UNI then provide the information necessary to theatre workers about the signs and significance of hearing loss as well as methods for prevention.
