Research demonstrates a widening gap between verbal communication skills expectations of employers and the perceived abilities of higher education graduates. Recent studies have also suggested that the art of acting is an effective pedagogical tool for developing oral communication skills; however, investigations of a beginning acting class in a higher educational setting are limited. The research question examined undergraduate students’ perceptions of the influence of a beginning acting class on the development of their verbal communication skills for future employment. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การแสดงในงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบการแสดงการวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบการแสดงในงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช โดยศึกษาข้อมูลด้านการแสดงในงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช ณ วงเวียนใหญ่ ฝั่งธนบุรี วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ใช้เครื่องมือในการศึกษาวิจัย ได้แก่ 1) สำรวจข้อมูลเชิงเอกสาร 2) สัมภาษณ์ ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิและบุคคลอื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง 3) อุปกรณ์เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศต่าง ๆ 4) เก็บข้อมูลภาคสนาม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแสดงที่พบในงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช บริเวณ วงเวียนใหญ่ มีรูปแบบที่หลากหลายและคัดเลือกแสดงที่มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อน้อมรำลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณต่อสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช การแสดงแต่ละชุดนั้นมีเรื่องราวสื่อถึงพระราชประวัติของพระองค์ผ่านการแสดง หรือมีเรื่องราวที่เกี่ยวข้องในสมัยธนบุรี โดยแบ่งรูปแบบการแสดงที่พบในงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชที่วงเวียนใหญ่ ปี พ.ศ. 2561 เป็น 2 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) รูปแบบการแสดงละคร เป็นละครอิงประวัติศาสตร์ เกี่ยวกับพระราชประวัติ ตลอดจนจำลองสถานการณ์การกอบกู้อิสรภาพสมัยธนบุรี 2) รูปแบบเบ็ดเตล็ด แบ่งออกเป็น 3 แบบ คือ 2.1 การแสดงมหรสพจีน ได้แก่ การเชิดสิงโต – มังกรทอง และอุปรากรจีน 2.2 การแสดงมหรสพไทย ได้แก่ ระบำ รำ ฟ้อน ศิลปะการต่อสู้ไทย 2.3 การแสดงดนตรีขับร้องประกอบการแสดง โดยมีสำนักงานเขตคลองสานร่วมกับสำนักงานเขตธนบุรีเป็นประธานในการจัดงานในครั้งนี้ อีกทั้งในการจัดงานเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชยังถือเป็นการร่วมกันอนุรักษ์และสืบสานประเพณีอันดีงามของฝั่งธนบุรีให้คงอยู่ต่อไป

การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทการแสดงนางลิเกของครูสกุณา รุ่งเรือง โดยใช้กระบวนการวิจัยคือ ศึกษาจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง การสัมภาษณ์และสังเกตการแสดงลิเก จากวีดิทัศน์ ฝึกกระบวนท่ารำจากครูสกุณา รุ่งเรืองเพื่อเรียบเรียงและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล มีประเด็นในการศึกษาบทบาทการแสดงลิเกแบ่งออกเป็น 7 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ บทบาทนางเอก บทบาทนางร้าย บาทบาทนางตลก บทบาทผู้หญิงปลอมเป็นผู้ชาย บทบาทการรำเกี้ยวเข้าพระ-เข้านาง บทบาทการรำออกตัว บทบาทการรำอาวุธ จากการศึกษาพบว่าครูสกุณา รุ่งเรืองมีคุณสมบัติเป็นครูลิเกโดยมีคุณลักษณะแบ่งออก 7 ลักษณะได้แก่ 1. การประพันธ์บทและการกำกับการแสดง เนื่องจากมีประสบการณ์การแสดงตั้งแต่วัยเด็ก 2. การด้นกลอนและการเจรจาเป็นส่วนสำคัญของการแสดงลิเก ผู้แสดงสามารถด้นกลอนสดได้โดยใช้คำที่สัมผัสคล้องจองทั้งดัดแปลงโทนเสียงตามลักษณะตัวละคร 3. การออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย ผู้ออกแบบมีแนวคิดและจินตนาการที่โดดเด่นเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะเข้ากับผู้สวมใส่ 4. การแต่งหน้า เป็นงานประณีตที่ต้องอาศัยสมาธิและความชำนาญ 5. แสดงได้ทุกบทบาท เนื่องจากได้ฝึกหัดบทบาทของนางลิเกมา 6. ร้องและรำเป็น มีพื้นฐานมาจากละครรำ 7. แสดงลิเกได้ทั้งคืนโดยมีเสียงที่สม่ำเสมอ ซึ่งได้ฝึกฝนการขับร้องและเรียนรู้กลวิธีในการขับร้องเพื่อให้มีกระแสเสียงสม่ำเสมอ เห็นได้ว่าครูสกุณา รุ่งเรืองมีการพัฒนาบทบาทการแสดงลิเกมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง นับเป็นองค์ความรู้ที่ทรงคุณค่าสามารถต่อยอดความรู้ต่อไป

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องละครไทยเรื่อง เฮเลนแห่งทรอย มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างสรรค์ละคร ที่มีเนื้อเรื่องจากต่างชาติให้เป็นละครไทย โดยการทดลองสร้างการแสดงและทำการวิเคราะห์ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้จากการผสมผสานศิลปะทั้งสองวัฒนธรรม ระหว่างนาฏกรรมกรีกโบราณ และนาฏกรรมไทย ผู้วิจัยเลือกเรื่อง เฮเลนแห่งทรอย มาใช้ในการทดลองสร้างสรรค์เป็นละครไทย เนื่องจากมีโครงสร้างและเนื้อหาใกล้เคียงกับเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ของไทย ได้แก่การลักพาตัวและ การทำสงครามแย่งชิงสตรีผู้งดงาม โดยผู้วิจัยได้สร้างสรรค์การแสดงผ่านกระบวนการออกแบบ การกำหนดและปรับปรุงเนื้อเรื่อง การประพันธ์บทละคร การบรรจุเพลง การจัดสร้าง เครื่องสวมศีรษะเครื่องแต่งกายและอุปกรณ์ประกอบการแสดง การสร้างตัวละคร การคัดเลือก นักแสดง การฝึกซ้อมนักแสดง นักดนตรี นักร้อง ผู้พากย์เจรจา และการจัดการแสดงจริง ผลจากการทดลองทำให้ทราบว่าเนื้อเรื่องจากวรรณกรรมกรีกสามารถจัดแสดงในรูปแบบนาฏกรรมไทยได้ เนื่องจากศิลปะดั้งเดิมของไทยมีความคล้ายคลึงกับศิลปะกรีกโบราณหลายประการได้แก่ การสวมหน้ากากของการแสดงโขนและละครกรีก เนื้อเรื่องสงครามแย่งชิงสตรีในเรื่อง เฮเลนแห่งทรอยของกรีกและรามเกียรติ์ของไทย ลำดับเหตุการณ์ในเรื่องเฮเลนแห่งทรอย ซึ่งสามารถนำมาแสดงในรูปแบบโขนหรือละครรำของไทยได้ ลำดับชั้นทางสังคมกรีก กับลำดับชั้นทางสังคมในนาฏกรรมไทย ความหลากหลายของสำเนียงการออกเสียงชื่อเฉพาะ ในเรื่องเฮเลนแห่งทรอยกับความหลากหลายในการเลือกใช้คำสัมผัสในกลอนบทละครไทย และการถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวด้วยการขับร้องบทกวีร้อยกรองของกรีกกับการบรรยายเรื่องราว ด้วยการขับร้องคำกลอนบทละครหรือการพากย์เจรจาโขน การสร้างสรรค์ละครเรื่อง เฮเลนแห่งทรอย จึงเป็นการแสดงละครไทยเรื่องแรกที่นำเนื้อเรื่องจากวรรณกรรมกรีก มาจัดแสดง เป็นแนวทางให้แก่ผู้วิจัยและผู้ที่สนใจนำไปต่อยอดเป็นการแสดงที่สมบูรณ์ยิ่งขึ้น ได้ในอนาคต

A Meisner Warm-Up: Advancing The Technique, Andrew Bryce

Why is there no warm-up for the Meisner technique? Why do standard vocal warm-ups not actually prepare the actor for performance? This thesis seeks to remedy both of these issues in 21st century actor training. It does so by creating a warm-up for the Meisner technique that will also prepare actors’ voice, body, and presence. This warm-up was formed by combining Meisner repetition exercises and the Miller Voice Method. The final warm-up was presented as a workshop for actors at the 2020 Southeastern Theatre Conference.

This project looks at the similarities and differences between three Shakespeare plays and their companion contemporary stage appropriations: Othello and Toni Morrisons’s Desdemona, The Winter’s Tale and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton’s 16 Winters or the Bear’s Tale, and Macbeth and Daivd Grieg’s Dunsinane. The specific lens used to examine these texts is the dramatic concept of time, taking the form of different variations throughout the work such as chronology, remembrance, fate, and futurity. Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies (1851, 1853) have long been among the most popular collections of piano music. They have also long garnered a reputation for “superficial brilliance and effect” which seems to have influenced the way that famous pianists play the works in public. But would a performer immersed in the Liszt tradition have approached them differently? This dissertation aims to promote a re-evaluation of the Hungarian Rhapsodies from this perspective: considering Liszt’s own ideas on music and performance, the writings and recordings of his pupils, and Liszt’s book Des Bohémiens et de leur musique en Hongrie (1859).

This thesis provides a case study which investigates the notion that a building which is historically and architecturally significant to a community holds that community’s memories within its walls. It argues that, in collaboration with the members of that community, these memories can be excavated, revealed and woven together to form a piece of site-specific theatre which can then be performed by and for those community members. It proposes that this intergenerational, creative collaboration may enhance the community members’ understanding and appreciation of the significance of the building, its place in the community and their place within it.

This practice-led research project explored the process of devising for performance for the stage via physical theatre workshops. The research was informed by Japanese butoh dance-theatre and its two creators, Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, and by the work of American comic Jerry Lewis. I began with exercises in group workshops derived from butoh movement practice, followed by inspiration drawn from Jerry Lewis’s performance and directorial work in his films, and from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Dancers dedicate their lives to their art. The lucky few dancers who reach professional careers, must navigate a casualised industry, balance financial pressures and maintain performance fitness. This research aimed to provide practical considerations for dancers to support their health and wellbeing through independent, professional dance careers. Dancers from Australian contemporary dance company Co3 participated in a training program involving psychological and physiotherapy assessments and fitness training in conjunction with a major performance season. Contrary to previous scholarship, which has claimed that university drama did not occur at the English universities before the Tudor period, Meacham argues that there was a vibrant tradition of performance throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. He suggests an earlier tradition has not been recognized because, in addition to the false assumption that medieval pedagogy cannot support such activity, the full range of medieval performance practices or "texts," beyond the traditional play text, have not been considered. The lighting programmer as a discrete profession is a relatively recent development in UK theatre production and one whose job description and responsibilities vary widely. Being an excellent programmer is not merely a case of manual dexterity and syntactical knowhow; it encompasses a range of interpersonal skills and empathetic awareness. Using two examples from recent fieldwork, and through an analysis of the language-in-use of lighting programmers, this article positions the theatre lighting programmer as an important member of both the creative and production teams and argues for greater awareness and promotion of their influence on theatre-making.
