My work is an exploration of identity as a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) body traversing through the generational histories of my family and the struggle of cultural loss to our assimilation of Whiteness. Timing Is Everything, But Does It Really Matter? Impact Of 8-Weeks Morning Versus Evening Iron Supplementation In Ballet And Contemporary Dancers, Caitlin Attwell, Alannah Mckay, Marc Sim, Cory Dugan, Joanna Nicholas, Luke Hopper, Peter Peeling

The effectiveness of a morning versus evening oral iron supplement strategy to increase iron stores was explored. Ballet and contemporary dancers with serum ferritin (sFer) < 50 g/L (n = 14), were supplemented daily with 105 mg elemental oral iron in either the morning (FeAM) or evening (FePM) for 8 weeks. A control group (n = 6) with sFer > 50 g/L were given no supplement over the same period. Dancers’ sFer were measured at baseline and post-intervention. Assessment of daily training load, dietary intake, and menstruation were made. A significant interaction (p < 0.001) showed the within group sFer change over the 8-week intervention in FeAM (+25.9 ± 10.5 g/L) and FePM, (+22.3 ± 13.6 g/L) was significantly different to CON (−30.17 ± 28.7 g/L; both p = 0.001). This change was not different between FeAM and FePM (p = 0.778). sFer levels within FeAM and FePM significantly increased over the 8-weeks; however, they significantly decreased in the CON group (all p < 0.05). Post-intervention sFer levels were no longer different between the three groups (p > 0.05). Training load, dietary intake, and number of menstrual cycles incurred were similar between FeAM and FePM (p > 0.05). Oral iron supplementation in either the morning or evening appears equally effective in increasing sFer levels in dancers with sub-optimal iron status.

Assessment of health status and preventative health knowledge of pre-professional dancers may help inform educational strategies promoting dancers’ health and career longevity. The aim of this research was to establish a baseline understanding of dance students at a single pre-professional institution based on metrics focused on current health, nutrition, lifestyle, and wellbeing while also gauging knowledge of longer-term health implications. Yet there remains a growing impetus for arts organisations and individual artists to measure and articulate the specific value of their practices through formal processes of evaluation. The relative paucity of research on directing reflects the way in which the practice of directing occurs–behind closed-doors (Trousdell 1992). This article provides a brief overview of the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis (NSP), an Australian variant of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training (SMAT) developed by John Nobbs in collaboration with Jacqui Carroll from the mid-1990s onwards. After a brief introduction to SMAT and the context in which NSP evolved from it, the article outlines NSP’s key differences in exercise practice and design, particularly in the use of signature physical and vocal tools, and the increased use of structured improvisation within NSP formats. Despite there being an increasing number of applied flow studies across scientific disciplines, there exists no consistent or broadly applicable intervention to promote flow experiences. This study provides a detailed account of a new educational flow training program developed following recent advancements in the flow literature that have provided a more parsimonious understanding of flow experiences and antecedents. Guided by CONSORT guidelines for feasibility trials, we conducted a single-group, non-randomized feasibility trial of an educational flow training program (N = 26). Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). Near the beginning of the book of Genesis, the Eden narrative provides a lens to culturally significant elements of early Hebrew culture. Genesis illustrates early Hebrew culture’s relationship with the natural world, sex, sin, judgment, and death. Similarly, John Milton’s retelling of the narrative in Paradise Lost divulges information about the culture that Milton lived in, as well as a great deal about the author himself. This study aimed to identify the nature of instructional differences between beginning, intermediate and advanced contemporary dance classes. The study involved interviewing two dance instructors and observing their classes, as well as conducting focus group discussions to gain insight from students. Despite difficulties in comparing across three levels given that no single instructor was observed teaching all three levels, the mixed method comparison yielded some common themes at each dance level. Given that students at higher levels were more aware of and comfortable with their bodies, instructors moved through the class at a quicker pace. Students at each level were …

Theatre is more than watching actors in the present. It can bring a magic into the room that connects us to a tangible ride of emotions. Sea shanties, a widely known variety of maritime singing, is purposely meant to bring its singers together. I wrote and directed an original one-act play structured around its repetitive beats, to create a communal feeling that will deem a sea of strangers a community for that day. This paper looks specifically at Memphis jookin, New Orleans jiggin, Washington DC’s beat ya feet and New York City’s litefeet. It explores common characteristics and regional differences in each dance, connecting them to older African and African-American dance aesthetics. Emphasizing shared cultural heritage, this paper argues that these dances form a singular body of work that is directly connected to African-American dance traditions developed during and after enslavement. In addition, it argues that these dances are important cultural institutions and act to preserve specifical African-American socio-cultural practices.

Dance in art can be seen in paintings created by artists such as Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Pierre Auguste-Renoir (1841-1919), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), William Blake (1757-1827), John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist artist who was known for his work of arts featuring ballerinas. Pierre Auguste-Renoir was also a French Impressionist artist like Degas, but he was more so known for his real-life scenario paintings. วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้ที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับกระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องเพลงลูกกรุง โดยใช้หลักการและแบบฝึกหัดลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์มาปรับใช้สำหรับการสอน โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์คือเพื่อค้นหาแนวทางการสอนการแสดงและแบบฝึกหัดทางการแสดงที่เหมาะสมในการถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลงสำหรับนักร้อง และเพื่อให้ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษากระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องอย่างลึกซึ้ง ซึ่งในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ดำเนินการในฐานะครูสอนการแสดง และได้เลือกศึกษากับผู้เข้ารับวิจัยจำนวน 5 คน โดยมีคุณสมบัติดังต่อไปนี้ 1) เป็นบุคคลกลุ่มเพศใดก็ได้ 2) เป็นผู้ที่มีอายุ 18 ปีขึ้นไป 3) เป็นผู้ที่มีพื้นฐานการร้องเพลงอยู่แล้ว 4) เป็นผู้ที่ต้องการพัฒนาศักยภาพของตนเองในด้านถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลง ผู้วิจัยได้ออกแบบแผนการสอนที่เน้นใช้แบบฝึกหัดของลี สตราสเบิร์ก และแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้ฝึกไว้เป็นหลัก ซึ่งมีระยะเวลาการสอนทั้งหมดจำนวน 12 ครั้ง ครั้งละ 3 ชั่วโมง และเมื่อผู้เข้ารับวิจัยเรียนครบตลอดแผนการสอนแล้วจึงได้จัดคอนเสิร์ตประกอบวิทยานิพนธ์เพื่อแสดงต่อหน้าผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิเพื่อนำข้อเสนอแนะรวมถึงแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชมมาประเมินผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแบบฝึกหัดและหลักการของทั้งลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ ที่ผู้วิจัยนำสอนสามารถใช้พัฒนาผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้เป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่าหลักการของลีสตราสเบิร์กในเรื่องของการสร้างความจริงจากภายในโดยใช้จิตนาการแห่งการรื้อฟื้นความทรงจำในอดีตนั้น สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับการวิจัยสามารถถ่ายทอดและสื่อสารความรู้สึกออกมาได้อย่างจริงใจได้จริง รวมถึงแบบฝึกหัดการพูดซ้ำ (Repetition) ในหลักการของแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ที่เน้นให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับมีสติปัจจุบันขณะแม้อยู่ภายใต้สถานการณ์สมมตินั้นก็สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะ (Moment) ได้เป็นอย่างดี แต่ทั้งนี้ฝึกฝนอย่างสม่ำเสมอเพื่อรักษาเสถียรภาพการอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะให้มั่นคงจนสามารถนำสามารถมาใช้ได้เป็นเองโดยอัตโนมัติ การทำวิจัยครั้งนี้ทำให้ผู้วิจัยค้นพบการที่จะช่วยให้ผู้เรียนพัฒนาได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดนั้นแบบฝึกหัดอย่างเดียวอาจจะไม่พอ จะต้องขึ้นอยู่กับความตั้งใจของผู้เรียนเองเพราะพลังแห่งความตั้งใจนี้จะส่งผลให้ผู้เรียนไม่ทำอะไรอย่างครึ่งๆ กลางๆ และสามารถพัฒนาตนเองได้อย่างก้าวกระโดด อีกประการหนึ่งคือทักษะด้านการร้องเพลงของผู้เรียนเอง ผู้เรียนควรมีทักษะการร้องที่ดีอยู่แล้วจึงจะต่อยอดทักษะทางด้านนี้ต่อไปได้ เพราะหากยังพะวงเกี่ยวกับการร้องเพลงของตนเองอยู่ จะส่งผลทำให้เกิดภาวะที่เรียกว่าสมาธิผิดที่ได้โดยง่าย นอกจากนี้ครูผู้สอนจำเป็นจะต้องมีความรู้ทางด้านการแสดงที่แม่นยำเพื่อที่จะได้ฝึกผู้เรียนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพอันนำไปสู่การพัฒนาอย่างสูงสุด

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติและศึกษาแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ โดยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงทดลองประกอบด้วยการค้นคว้าเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์ และการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าประเทศไทยส่งตัวแทนเข้าประกวดนางงามจักรวาลครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2497 และเข้าร่วมรายการมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งมีการประกวดรอบชุดประจำชาติ ที่ผ่านมาการสร้างสรรค์ท่าทางลีลานาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ 1) นางงามและบุคคลใกล้ชิดเตรียมท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยเพื่อใช้ในการประกวด 2) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยส่งนางงามเข้าฝึกหัดท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อสร้างคลังท่าหรือโครงสร้างของท่าและกระบวนท่าสำหรับให้นางงามเลือกใช้เมื่อถึงการประกวด 3) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยจัดหาผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อออกแบบท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยสำหรับการนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ส่วนแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ผู้วิจัยพบว่ามีปัจจัยที่เป็นข้อบังคับจากกองประกวดนางงามจักรวาลและผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยอยู่ 6 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) แนวคิดเครื่องแต่งกาย 2) แนวดนตรีประกอบการประกวดในรอบชุดประจำชาติ 3) ระยะเวลาในการนำเสนอ 30-90 วินาที 4) รูปแบบเวทีการวางตำแหน่งเมื่ออยู่บนเวที และมุมกล้อง 5) คุณสมบัติของนางงาม 6) วิธีการเดินของนางงาม เมื่อรวบรวมข้อมูลเหล่านี้แล้วจึงดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์ลีลาท่าทางโดยเน้นการเดินของนางงามผสานเข้ากับลีลาท่าทางนาฏศิลป์ไทยและการแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกผ่านสีหน้าแววตา โดยคำนึงถึงการส่งเสริมแนวคิดของเครื่องแต่งกายให้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น
