Noises Off, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Feb 1997

Noises Off, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1996-1997 Season

Michael Frayn's Noises Off takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run. Frayne gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises …

Directing A Children's Play, Jennifer L. Symalla Jan 1997

Directing A Children's Play, Jennifer L. Symalla

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

After directing an hour-long children's play during January of 1997, I needed to reflect on the project and what it meant to me. In my reflection paper I discuss the process that I, as a director, went through from the moment I decided I wanted to direct a play to idealizing about my next directing project. This process that I describe includes what I learned from choosing a script, auditions, researching for the production, rehearsals, audience reactions to the production, and what I learned about myself. I also describe how directing a children's play in the style of Commedia dell' …

The Styles Of Clothing Worn By Women In Minnesota From 1870 To 1880, Katrina Dolezal Jan 1997

The Styles Of Clothing Worn By Women In Minnesota From 1870 To 1880, Katrina Dolezal

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

My thesis was a study of the different styles of women's clothing worn in Minnesota during the 1870's. I have had two basic purposes for the study reported in this thesis. I hoped to provide an understanding of the influences that affected the clothing worn by women in Minnesota during the years 1870-1880. I also desired to assemble an illustrated record of typical women's fashion during this period. Pioneer women, who settled even in remote corners of the state, still tried to keep up to date with the fashion prevalent in the rest of the nation, but concessions to fashion …

The author provides an in-depth analysis of the script, casting choices, rehearsal process, and production challenges, emphasizing the emotional depth of the story and the interplay between the characters. The Violin Director And Verdi's Middle-Period Operas, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 1997

The Violin Director And Verdi's Middle-Period Operas, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The operas of Verdi provide an excellent laboratory for studying the transition from violin director to conductor. By the mid 1860s, some two dozen of his works had been presented hundreds of times throughout Italy. Information on many of these performances is currently available in periodicals, theater histories, and other chronicles. In addition, the American Institute for Verdi Studies (AIVS) has microfilmed over sixty documents that offer a unique perspective on the role of the violin directors, namely, the parts from which they performed. These parts are enlightening both for what they contain and what they omit, suggesting in greater …

"Still Dreaming Of Paradise": Rodgers And Hammerstein ' S Oklahoma!, South Pacific , And Postwar America, Randall Bond Dec 1996

"Still Dreaming Of Paradise": Rodgers And Hammerstein ' S Oklahoma!, South Pacific , And Postwar America, Randall Bond

Dissertations - Open Access

Oklahoma! and South Pacific were Rodgers and Hammerstein's most successful and popular musicals of the 1940's. This study demonstrates their function as modern morality plays for their audiences. Specifically, the two musicals provided Americans with a prescription for a postwar Paradise. This was a Paradise based upon the American Dream of rebirth and renewal acted out in a landscape of second chances. The components of this Paradise are examined in topical essays that consider such issues as Americanism, consumerism, tourism, racism, and optimism. Each of these elements links what would otherwise appear to be disparate narratives: the American West at …
