Cabaret: The Design And Production Process, Jennifer J. Owen '01 Jan 2001

Cabaret: The Design And Production Process, Jennifer J. Owen '01

Honors Projects

The textbook definition of initial design work breaks down the process into seven basic steps: commitment, analysis, research, incubation, selection, implementation, and reflection. Though it is obvious that a realized design is not as simple as this breakdown, the definition provides a useful starting point for conversation about design. It is important to note that though this model makes the design process appear linear in nature, each of the steps in the process occurs throughout many different phases of the design. I will refer this definition of the design process throughout my discussion of Cabaret.

Blue Vaudeville: Sex, Morals, And The Mass-Marketing Of Amusement, 1895-1915, Andrew L. Erdman Jan 2001

Blue Vaudeville: Sex, Morals, And The Mass-Marketing Of Amusement, 1895-1915, Andrew L. Erdman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Vaudeville was the most popular form of entertainment in the United States, from roughly the 1890s through World War I. In fact, it can reasonably be called the first truly mass form of entertainment in the United States, and perhaps the world. This dissertation examines how vaudeville grew as the first national, large-scale form of amusement in America. It attempts to locate the rise of this first form of mass entertainment within an era when powerful businessmen in many industries were beginning to market products and services to a national market as well.

Furthermore, this dissertation examines some of the …

“The Popular Repertory And The German-American Audience: The Pabst Theater In Milwaukee, 1885-1909”, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

German-language theatre in Milwaukee reached its pinnacle in 1895 with the construction of the Pabst Theater, and there it flourished until 1909. The first theatre performances in Milwaukee, however, had taken place at mid-point in the nineteenth century.

Rev. Of Theatre Under The Nazis, Ed. John London., William Grange Jan 2001

Rev. Of Theatre Under The Nazis, Ed. John London., William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

John London’s edition of six essays attempts no comprehensive estimation of theatre under the Nazis as one might assume from the title, but rather provides six valuable windows through which one may glimpse sometimes startling illustrations of how political forces can easily overcome and subdue artistic expression, exploit idealism for totalitarian purposes, and give the sheen of political correctness to cultural perversion.

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo Jan 2001

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo

Theses

The nucleus of my thesis will be the direction of "Suddenly Last Summer'', by Tennessee Williams. This play will be performed under my direction for The St. Charles Theatre Company on October 27 and 28, November 3 and 4, 2000. "Suddenly Last Summer'' was first introduced to the public at the York Theatre, in New York City, on January 7, 1958.

It is my intent to present my own interpretation of this play and document my process of directing it in a community theatre environment. This becomes even more interesting to me because, although the St. Charles Theatre Company has …

A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study Of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, Larry D. Quiggins Jan 2001

A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study Of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, Larry D. Quiggins

Theses

This thesis, titled A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, explores the creative partnership between Neil Simon and Anton Chekhov through Simon's adaptation of Chekhov's short stories into a theatrical work. Written by Larry D. Quiggins in 2001 as part of an MFA in Theatre: Directing, the study examines the nuances of Simon's play, which combines humor and drama to bring Chekhov's stories to life for contemporary audiences.

The thesis begins by analyzing the nine Chekhov stories Simon adapted, including The Sneeze, The Governess, and Surgery, comparing Simon's modifications to the originals. It highlights …

Mcnally's Men: The Homosocial Gaze In Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Gary L. Green Jan 2001

Mcnally's Men: The Homosocial Gaze In Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Gary L. Green

Graduate Research Papers

I will examine McNally's 1991 play "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" and explore his theatrical representations of the male body onstage, primarily from the point of view of the heterosexual male characters, John and Sam, and their homosocial relationship with each other, and how they relate to the invisible presence of the gay men around them. While "Love! Valour! Compassion!" displays frontal nudity, "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" uses what I will call "narrative nudity," verbally conjuring up the physicality of the male body through images designed by McNally's vivid and colorful language and dialogue. This paper will be in two parts: …

Grave Matter: Contestations In Actress Burial, Christine Courtland Mather Jan 2001

Grave Matter: Contestations In Actress Burial, Christine Courtland Mather

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Death disrupts. The social space accorded to rituals of death and memorialization differs from all other spaces. Actresses disturb. Society contests, determines, and enacts the burial of an actress as her final performance. This study explores the actress burial as a site of meaning. Contestations over the fate of the actress body reveal power structures and the motivations of cultural institutions. This study highlights four actresses—Lecouvreur, Oldfield, Bernhardt, and Duse—whose burials cover a wide range of circumstances. Each chapter gives the relevant biographical information for the actress and the social background for the cultural contestation over the actress body. Traditional …

Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt Jan 2001

Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The response project and accompanying thesis aim to affirm the role of the dancer as an authority in revealing patterns and traces of accumulated lived experience, knowledge and ideas through the practice and performance of dance improvisation. The dancing body is investigated as a dynamical and complex system of research that is embedded in a process of continual response to the present. These bodily inscriptions and the process of active response form the seminal grounds for the physical and energetic exchange of improvised dance in performance.

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2001

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This essay examines some of the issues involved in administering performing arts manuscript collections. After briefly discussing the evolving notion of privacy in both its legal and moral senses, it will turn to the relationships and interlocking responsibilities of the four groups concerned with access to manuscript collections: donors, custodians, users, and "third-party" contributors. Finally, the results of a survey of performing arts repositories will reveal the variety of ways in which these responsibilities are addressed. It will be demonstrated that despite the attention paid to issues of access by professional organizations, agreements in theory, much less in practice, have …

A Midsummer Night's Dream For Middle School, Diana Nash Jan 2001

A Midsummer Night's Dream For Middle School, Diana Nash

Theses

William Shakespeare wrote plays for the masses -- the aristocrats as well as the common people. While his dramas, tragedies, and comedies were controversial, sometimes bawdy, and always physical, in the twentieth century, secondary school educators have come to think of Shakespeare's plays as literature for academic study. Middle schools rarely cover any Shakespearean plays in the classroom. Students traditionally start to study Shakespearean scripts in high school. In high school, freshman usually read Romeo and Juliet; sophomores read Julius Caesar, Macbeth, or Hamlet. Most secondary curriculums do not include a Shakespearean comedy.

While it is true that occasionally a …

The Casino Theatre At Newport, Rhode Island, The Summer Colonists' Playhouse: Reality, Grandeur, Memories 1881-1960, Marialyn E. Riley Jan 2001

The Casino Theatre At Newport, Rhode Island, The Summer Colonists' Playhouse: Reality, Grandeur, Memories 1881-1960, Marialyn E. Riley

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

James Gordon Bennett., owner of the New York Herald, was the visionary founder of the Casino Theatre at Newport, Rhode Island. The Casino, a complex located on fashionable Bellevue Avenue, was recognized as the first complete resort facility in America. The theatre was an integral part of this complex. Between 1879 and 1881, this showcase was designed by the New York firm of McKim, Mead & White. White designed the theatre.

It is important to recognize that theatrical productions were a notable component of Newport life from pre-Revolutionary times. These theatrical endeavors were a prelude to the Newport Casino Theatre. …

Because Of Thy Exceeding Faith: A Choreographic Portrayal Of Women In The Book Of Mormon, Wendy L. Bone Jan 2001

Because Of Thy Exceeding Faith: A Choreographic Portrayal Of Women In The Book Of Mormon, Wendy L. Bone

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a choreographic exploration that illuminates and defines moments in the lives of women who are mentioned in the Book of Mormon. These women are Sariah; the wife of King Lamoni and Abish, her servant; and the Ammonite mothers of Helaman's two thousand stripling warriors. It is through these stories that their faith was evident. By understanding the roles these women played in the history of the Book of Mormon, we can use their example to strengthen our own testimonies.
It was discovered through this process that, although one can read about the life of another, a deeper …
