*Inclusive Language Reform In Catalonia And Valencia (*Some Exclusions May Apply), Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Romance languages have traditionally represented gender through binary markers (Papadopoulos, 2019; Rainer, 2020). More recently, they are shifting toward inclusive innovations, with some degree of popular support (Slemp, 2021), as well as resistance (Kosnick, 2021; Niklison, 2020). Following the recent linguistic innovation to move beyond binary markers in Spain, gender-inclusive discourse usually focuses on the Spanish language, with little research available on other languages in the country, such as Aranese, Basque, Catalan, Galician, and Valencian. This study examines Catalan and Valencian, spoken primarily in Catalonia and Valencia, respectively. Using twelve institutional documents published between 2005-2021, this analysis examines how public …
Between Word And World: Textual Space In Modern Sephardic Literature, Inci Cetin
Between Word And World: Textual Space In Modern Sephardic Literature, Inci Cetin
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
In the context of modern Sephardic literature, this paper defines “textual space” as the narrative’s self-conscious arrangement of its own textual elements such as time, space, and language to negotiate a position vis-à-vis the nation-state that is neither fully subsumed within nor completely outside of it. Textual spaces neither conform to the nation state’s borders even though they write from it, nor to nationalist temporalities as they continue a narrative thread that reaches back to 15th-century Spain. Through Myriam Moscona’s Tela de sevoya (2012) and Mario Levi’s Istanbul Was a Fairytale (1999), this paper investigates how textual spaces are deliberately …
Acquisition Of The Tap-Trill-Lateral Contrast By Speakers Of L1 Cantonese-L2 Spanish, José Esteban Hernández
Acquisition Of The Tap-Trill-Lateral Contrast By Speakers Of L1 Cantonese-L2 Spanish, José Esteban Hernández
Spanish Faculty Publications
In the present study an assessment of the on-target and off-target production of liquids (laterals and rhotics) is undertaken in a corpus of second language (L2) Spanish. The Chinese-origin participants have immigrated to Mexicali, Mexico where they have acquired L2 Spanish in a natural setting. As a major aim, a quantitative analysis of the data is performed to determine the production of on-target and off-target articulations in lateral, tap, thrill, and syllable-coda rhotic. Internal and external factors are considered in the analysis; for example, liquid production in syllable onset, coda and consonant clusters was considered. The data were subjected to …
Imágenes De Silencio, Compromiso, Persecución Y Tortura: La Teología De La Liberación Y Su Encrucijada Con Las Dictaduras Del Cono Sur Desde Una Representación Cinematográfica, Marcial Martínez
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation examines the interaction between liberation theology and the
dictatorships of the Southern Cone from the 1960s to the 1980s through cinematic
representation. Filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay
depict the political upheavals of the time, including the rise of leftist movements,
military regimes, and the influence of liberation theology, a progressive religious
ideology advocating for the oppressed. The study focuses on what is defined here
as the "cinematic canon of liberation theology," a body of films and documentaries
that legitimize, contest, or obscure ideologies tied to this movement vis-à-vis the
dictatorships. These films contest the silence …
Voices In The Borderlands: Reimagining Identity, Cultural Belonging, And Dystopian Spaces In Anzaldúa’S Borderlands And Viramontes’S “The Cariboo Café”, Oralia G. Ramos
Voices In The Borderlands: Reimagining Identity, Cultural Belonging, And Dystopian Spaces In Anzaldúa’S Borderlands And Viramontes’S “The Cariboo Café”, Oralia G. Ramos
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera (1987) and Helena María Viramontes’ short story “The Cariboo Café” (1985) portray marginalized individuals navigating liminal spaces of identity, oppression, and survival. Borderlands/La Frontera and “The Cariboo Café” show how systematic violence and displacement shatter the self, pushing characters to navigate trauma in a dystopian space. Sonya, Macky, the café owner, and the grieving mother represent Anzaldúa’s concepts of borderland subjectivity, betrayal, and spectral haunting.
Sonya and Macky, two undocumented children, represent Anzaldúa’s borderlands subjects and reside in a state of nepantla, an in-between space of cultural dislocation. The café owner …
Trans-Pacific Connections: Chinese Porcelain And Aztec Motifs In Colonial Mexico, Natalia Ramirez
Trans-Pacific Connections: Chinese Porcelain And Aztec Motifs In Colonial Mexico, Natalia Ramirez
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This research explores artworks within the Global Baroque as visual and ideological evidence through which colonial power, trade, and cross-cultural influence shaped the material culture of the early modern world. Centering on blue and white ceramics as a key medium of transcultural and trans-local exchange, the study analyzes how global motifs, particularly those drawn from Aztec and Chinese traditions, were reinterpreted, aestheticized, and circulated in Aztec and Novohispanic artistic practices.
Through a close observational comparison of Aztec and Chinese decorative systems, the study recognizes contrasting systems of cultural documentation embedded within similar visual forms. Aztec motifs, rooted in ritual, calendrical, …

Language concordance is vital in providing quality healthcare for growing Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. As such, higher education institutions are responsible for preparing future health professionals who demonstrate linguistic proficiency and cultural competence when caring for Spanish-speaking patients. Furthermore, Spanish language instructors and academic departments are responsible for fostering enrollment by providing quality courses and programs that prepare students to use Spanish in their future careers. This article presents the results from surveys of Medical Spanish students on their views on assessment in their Medical Spanish courses and programs. The researchers administered a survey to 44 undergraduate students …
“Let Me Be A Bridge”: Language Brokering Among Emerging Adult Latina Professionals In The Midwest, Elise M. Dubord
“Let Me Be A Bridge”: Language Brokering Among Emerging Adult Latina Professionals In The Midwest, Elise M. Dubord
Faculty Publications
In immigrant families, bilingual children and adolescents regularly act as translators and interpreters for family and community members who are not fluent in the dominant language. These childhood language brokers later shift the focus of their translation activities as they transition into adulthood and develop professional skills. This research explores narratives of language brokering trajectories of three bilingual Latinas who were emerging adult professionals in three cities in Iowa. Based on a series of interviews collected over a 15 month period, this analysis examines how participants described realigning their family language responsibilities while simultaneously transferring their language brokering skills to …
Maria Firmina Dos Reis: The Erasure Of An Author And The Recuperation Of A Legacy, Anderson Gomes Barbosa
Maria Firmina Dos Reis: The Erasure Of An Author And The Recuperation Of A Legacy, Anderson Gomes Barbosa
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The very first woman to write a novel in Brazil was Afro-Brazilian: Maria Firmina dos Reis published Ursula in 1859. The novel, published with her own savings, was the first abolitionist piece ever written in the country in which Black enslaved characters were treated as equals to white ones. Tragically, the book disappeared from shelves in Brazil for almost a century. Maria Firmina was not only Afro-Brazilian and a woman, but also from Nordeste, a region that is discriminated against by other parts of Brazil. I believe her erasure in the Brazilian literary canon was not a mere …

An Exploration Of The Economic And Social Impacts Of The Grupo Social Once, Annalaura B. Swinea
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the economic and social impacts of Grupo Social ONCE, a Spanish institution that operates at the intersection of business, philanthropy, and social inclusion. ONCE has evolved from a small lottery initiative for the blind into a multifaceted organization comprising JuegosONCE (its lottery operation), Fundación ONCE (a philanthropic foundation), and ILUNION (a business group promoting inclusive employment). Through historical analysis, organizational review, and employment statistics, this study evaluates whether ONCE successfully fosters economic inclusion for people with disabilities. It argues that the hybrid model of Grupo Social ONCE creates a self-reinforcing cycle of social and economic empowerment …
Geraldo De Barros’S Fotoformas: Towards The Construction Of New Forms Of Legibility, Jay Bravo
Geraldo De Barros’S Fotoformas: Towards The Construction Of New Forms Of Legibility, Jay Bravo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the legibility and reception of Geraldo de Barros’s Fotoformas within Western art institutions, using MoMA’s 2021 Fotoclubismo exhibition as a case study. It argues that the integration of Brazilian modernist photography into canonical narratives often hinges on strategic affinities with Euro-American frameworks. Drawing on institutional critique, postcolonial theory, and the concept of Anthropophagy, the study explores how Fotoformas challenges conventional photographic discourse and reveals broader dynamics of artistic legitimacy and representation.

La Barrera Lingüística Del Sistema De Salud Para Los Hispanohablantes En Eeuu, Emma Rose
CURCI Student Research

Languages, Literatures & Cultures
In sociolinguistics, language attitudes refer to perceptions, opinions, or beliefs about a language or language variety and its speakers. These attitudes often reflect and reinforce ideologies that favor a dominant or standard language while stigmatizing minority or non-standard languages. New York State is a uniquely multilingual region encompassing both highly urban and rural areas. Its cultural and linguistic composition has been changing rapidly, including a growing Spanish-speaking population. Despite this shift, a gap exists in research on language attitudes toward Spanish-speaking individuals in New York’s healthcare settings. Healthcare is not a universal experience, and previous studies have shown that unaddressed …
Using Motivation Science To Understand And Overcome Common Psychological Barriers To Non-Native Language Learning In Beginner And Intermediate College Courses, Ahana Nagarkatti
Using Motivation Science To Understand And Overcome Common Psychological Barriers To Non-Native Language Learning In Beginner And Intermediate College Courses, Ahana Nagarkatti
College Honors Program
This project examined whether established findings from the motivation science literature could be successfully applied to increase non-native language learning outcomes and persistence among college students. Participants were enrolled in beginner and intermediate language courses at a small private college. The study was longitudinal and involved “diagnosing” and immediately implementing interventions to counter deficits experienced by individual students regarding six specific motivational antecedents: expectancies for success, utility value, costs, autonomy, belonging, and growth mindsets. Over the course of a semester, participants’ motivational experiences in these areas were measured and they then completed tailored “just-in-time” intervention activities designed to increase their …
Dialectal Variations Of Food Terms In The Spanish-Speaking World And Their Causes, Dylan Muccino
Dialectal Variations Of Food Terms In The Spanish-Speaking World And Their Causes, Dylan Muccino
Honors Theses
This study explores the dialectal variations of food-related terms across the Spanish-speaking world, emphasizing their multilingual etymological origins. Using etymological dictionaries and sociolinguistic sources, the study categorizes food-related lexical variants into five main root language groups: Arabic/Afro-Asiatic/European, Pre-Columbian Caribbean, Mesoamerican, South American, and unknown or unique origins. The findings represent the persistence of Indigenous influence, the impact of Arabic on Peninsular Spanish, the development of Spanish from Latin, and the role of analogy and adaptation in naming unfamiliar items, illustrating the dynamic and complex relationship between language, culture, and history.

Wide Screen With Critical Essay "Translating A Poetry Of Cinema"., James L. Richie Iv
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation combines the creative task of translating Víctor Cabrera’s poetry collection WIDE SCREEN (2009) from Spanish into English with a critical study that analyzes the volume to highlight the uniqueness of his writing, the importance of translating such a work for an Anglophone audience, and the challenges that occur in translating this complex collection. Moreover, Cabrera’s writing engages with a variety of cultural works in ways that challenge preconceived notions of language, culture, and medium. The poetry in WIDE SCREEN draws inspiration from the films of American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, while frequently putting these films into dialogue with works …

Chelsey’s reflection, written in November 2023 for Dr. Nancy López’s Intersectionality: Race, Gender, Class for Social Policy course, stands as a profound testament to her intellect, compassion, and commitment to understanding the complexities of privilege and identity. In this deeply personal narrative, Chelsey examines the paradoxes of privilege she carried and the ways in which they intersected with her marginalized identities. Her words reveal not only her dedication to self-awareness and growth but also her unwavering commitment to fostering equity and understanding within her community. As an educator, colleague, and advocate, Chelsey embodied the principles of humility and responsibility.

Americans take pride in having popularized the campus novel. Too bad it hap- pened like their demonym, American, which presumes one thing and ignores the rest. In this research, I demonstrate that the campus novel is a limited genre. I also explore why critics and readers alike consider it an American genre, that is one that makes visible only certain kinds of Americans. My focus is on the lack of Hispanic authors and protagonists. Millions of Hispanics teach, study, and work in American (US) universities, yet fiction does not reflect this reality. Having traced its limitations and analyzed the survey …
