Julieta Lanteri And Political Caricature: The Democratic Reach Of Commercial Theater And The Expansion Of The Public Sphere, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Kristen Mccleary
International Journal on Responsibility
In the early twentieth century, popular theater in Buenos Aires appealed to a diverse audience, including immigrants, men, and women from all social classes, workers, as well as the most elite members of the oligarchy. By analyzing one work in particular, La doctora de Lantera, by Armando B. Rillo and Victor Dolard, one of the most well-attended plays of 1919, this article focuses on how theater reveals the social tensions surrounding the role of women in society during an era of dramatic change. It also shows how theater provides an outlet from which to identify, negotiate, and, at times, …
Terminating Pregnancies In Boccaccio, Anne C. Leone
Terminating Pregnancies In Boccaccio, Anne C. Leone
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Analyzing examples from the Decameron (1349-51), De mulieribus claris (1361), and the Corbaccio (1365), I argue that Boccaccio (1313-75) demonstrates an awareness of theological, legal and medical opinions on abortion and contraception at the time. However, he is more attuned to the practical concerns of pregnancy than are many of his contemporaries. Acknowledging the variety of situations facing pregnant people and some parts of their lived experience that were ignored by many religious and legal authorities, Boccaccio highlights a disconnection between theory and practice, and thereby raises questions about the limits of abstract knowledge in the face of practical concerns.
Sounds Like 'Saudade': Eschatological Echoes In Brazilian 'Gospel' Music, Fernando Berwig Silva
Sounds Like 'Saudade': Eschatological Echoes In Brazilian 'Gospel' Music, Fernando Berwig Silva
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This paper analyzes the song “Saudade” by the Brazilian gospel singer Stella Laura. In the song, I argue that Stella Laura uses Brazilian timbral markers from the Sertanejo and Gospel Brazilian music genres to articulate a unique perspective on eschatology, one that is based on the affective structure of the Lusophone word ‘saudade.’ Furthermore, I contend that the song, rooted in the Brazilian nostalgic sertanejo music tradition, leans on stylistic and timbral tools to communicate the idea of saudade from heaven. Beyond lyrics that feature theological notions of origin, identity, and nostalgia, Stella Laura’s song employs timbral, poetic, …

Research Guide To Womanist Literature: Historical, Anticolonial, And Fictional Perspectives, Apoliana Da Conceicao Dos Santos
FIRE Fund Bibliographies
This bibliography was compiled for both research and teaching purposes, organized into three thematic categories reflecting a hemispheric, anticolonial, and womanist approach to knowledge production. The collection centers Black, Afro-Latin American, and feminist voices, offering alternative epistemologies that challenge Eurocentric, patriarchal, and colonial frameworks commonly reproduced in academic syllabi. It invites professors and students across disciplines to engage with scholarship and storytelling that foreground women's histories, theories, and creative expressions.
The first category, Historical Womanist Literature, examines testimonies, resistance, kinship, and survival of Black women under slavery and colonial rule across the Atlantic world, drawing extensively from histories of gendered …

Spa 619 - Seminar In Studies Of Hispanic And Latin American Cultures, Juan Jesús Payán
Open Educational Resources

For decades, epic fantasy has been predominantly associated with the Anglo-American tradition, exemplified by authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard. However, this perspective neglects the contributions of lesser-known but equally rich traditions, such as Spanish literature. Mariano Martín Rodríguez's Fantasía épica española (1842–1903) seeks to fill this historiographical gap by exploring the Spanish roots of epic fantasy through a theoretical analysis and an anthology of representative texts. This volume not only rescues forgotten works but also redefines critical paradigms to include non-Anglophone perspectives, offering a foundational resource for rethinking the global history of epic fantasy.

“There's No Such Thing”: Between The Latin American Science Fiction Archive And A Growing Academic Field., Maria Dolores Gonzalez Ortega, Valeria Seminario Portella
Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
Abstract: Over the past few decades, Latin American science fiction has garnered growing academic interest in both Latin America and the United States. This increase in attention is driven not only by the proliferation of new publications in the region but also by the persistent archival, collecting, and cataloging efforts of scholars and collectors who work to uncover, preserve, and define the genre’s historical and cultural significance. Accessing these texts, which often circulate outside canonical literary and institutional frameworks, presents significant challenges. Specialized collections dedicated to Latin American science fiction reflect a response to these obstacles and attempt to bridge …

WINNER, 2024 ALDO AND JEANNE SCAGLIONE PUBLICATION AWARD FOR A MANUSCRIPT IN ITALIAN LITERARY STUDIES, MODERN LANGUAGES ASSOCIATION
Introduces a way to study migration that privileges literary analysis over and against sociological data and insists on the importance of culture in the production of political identities
This book argues that Italians first became racialized as white in São Paulo, Brazil, at the turn of the twentieth century. Whereas Italians in the United States struggled with xenophobia and were often not fully acknowledged as white, in São Paulo, due to a series of social, economic, and cultural factors, Italians became closely …

Interspecies Responsivity In Early Modern Drama And Animal Performances, Taylor C. Culbert
Interspecies Responsivity In Early Modern Drama And Animal Performances, Taylor C. Culbert
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation proposes an expansive, interspecies definition of performance that uses behavior rather than cognition as the decisive feature and illustrates how such a definition can reshape our approach to theatre and performance history. Using the concept of responsivity, which refers to the embodied and affective ways that humans and non-human animals acknowledge and react to one another, I trace human–animal interactions across a variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century performance genres, from the aristocratic stag hunt and entertainments involving trained animals to the plays of Molière and Shakespeare. Drawing on my experience training animals, I offer a new perspective on …

Since William Labov outlined the methodology for the sociolinguistic interview in 1972, sociolinguistic corpora have been used widely in the field of sociolinguistics to study diverse speech communities and linguistic features. However, most of these invaluable sociolinguistic collections have been available only to the individual researcher or research group, and these data sets usually disappear from use with that individual scholar. More recently, there has been a push towards data sharing in sociolinguistics, reflective of data sharing and the open science movement in other fields. Still, accessible online sociolinguistic corpora are few and far between, in part due to the …

La Emboscada Postpoética De Agustín Fernández Mallo: Física, Cognición, Contemporaneidad, Entropía, Candelas Gala
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
La emboscada postpoética de Agustín Fernández Mallo: física, cognición, contemporaneidad, entropía analyzes the poet’s proposal to rescue, with his Postpoetry, official poetry from its sclerotic stagnation due to its fidelity to worn-out premises, to recover a language connected with matter, and to renew its cognitive value. By means of byways (or drifting) through different disciplines, Postpoetry shares space with television, pop music, videos, the Internet, cinema, the arts, publicity, and the sciences, physics in particular. Postpoetry illuminates the intersection between the tranquility that tradition provides and the disquiet that comes with novelty. There is an ambush because, like Odysseus with …

“Vasallos De Su Magestad”: Colocaciones, Cortesía Y Contacto En Documentos Coloniales En Español Del Siglo 18 En Bolivia, Joaquin Tapia Guerra
LSU Master's Theses
The present study analyzes Spanish collocations and keywords used in politeness strategies found in colonial documents from the late 18th century in the provinces of Moxos and Chiquitos, in eastern Bolivia. The focus of attention is a portion of the archival material used where a denunciation translated from Movima to Spanish by interpreters and sent between Spanish officers on mission is found. Through the analysis of the corpus, sociopragmatic patterns were identified that could constitute evidence of the translinguistic contact and the situation of social asymmetry that presumably took place between Spanish officers and members of the Movima community. In …

"El Corregidor" At The Crossroads: Desire, Law, And Coloniality In Martel's Zama, Leisa Kauffmann
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In "'El Corregidor at the Crossroads: Desire, Law and Coloniality in Martel's Zama" Leisa Kauffmann discusses Lucrecia Martel's filmic adaptation of Antonio DiBenedetto's 1952 novel, Zama. Highlighting the director's emphasis on the psychoanalytic (as opposed to the existentialist) dimensions of the novel, the essay follows the titular characater's unravelling and shows how Martel's film allegorizes colonial(ist) subjectivity. In Kauffmann's essay, various psychoanalytic theories (such as the work of Bhabha, Fanon, and Žižek), and critiques centering the notion of race in the Lacanian tradition are applied. In addition, differences between the novel and film, particularly regarding Zama's mutilation and …

This is a site of geologic excavation; where charged voices like porous monoliths and forked-tongue shapeshifters call out in fragmented polyphony. What lies broken or misshapen, what can be pieced back together.

The Extraction Unconscious: Solar-Powered Utopias In Catching The Sun (2015) And In The Name Of Lithium (2021), Isidora Cortés-Monroy
Critical Humanities
By comparing the depictions of future energy regimes in the two ecodocumentaries, Catching the Sun (2015) and In the Name of Lithium (2021), this article explores representations of post-carbon futures from the US and Argentina. Read closely alongside Frederic Jameson’s notions of utopias, the article delineates the extent to which a solar powered future challenges and reiterates current neocolonial extractivist structures. Basing myself on Patricia Yaeger’s concept of an “energy unconscious,” I argue that these solar utopias maintain an “extraction unconscious” that continues to produce sacrifice zones where primary commodities needed for the energy transition can be found. By analysing …

On The Edge Of The Abyss: Cultural Responses To Extractivism In The Andes, Jack Martinez Arias
Critical Humanities
This work examines the contemporary cultural productions of Cerro de Pasco, a city in constant destruction due to an ever-expanding open pit mine that has grown to over a mile wide since the 1950s. Drawing on Latin American environmental humanities and discursive analysis, I conduct a close reading of poems, stories, performances, and audiovisual works by local artists responding to this largely overlooked apocalyptic scenario. By analyzing narrative strategies such as repetition and irony, I identify recurring themes and establish common concerns related to extractivism, urban extinction, illness, and death. This study seeks to understand how these cultural productions envision …

Homage to Alexander von Humboldt: Travels to and from Spain Throughout the Centuries / Homenaje a Alexander von Humboldt: Viajes hacia y desde España de todos los siglos

Homage to Alexander von Humboldt: Travels to and from Spain Throughout the Centuries / Homenaje a Alexander von Humboldt: Viajes hacia y desde España de todos los siglos
The first journeys of the writer and dramatist Fernando Arrabal between his home country Spain and France were decisive for both his life and his extensive literary production. Arrabal grew up in Franco’s Spain. His father was a Republican lieutenant and was sentenced to imprisonment for life because of his denying to participate in Franco’s rebellion against the democratic Republic. Arrabal’s mother was, however, a supporter of Franco. This political clash between Arrabal’s parents affected him strongly. During his adolescence it became difficult for him to endure the cultural climate in Franco’s Spain. At the age of 22 he hitchhiked …

Polimatía Y Epistemología En El Sello Epistolar De Alexander Von Humboldt En Concordancia Con Las Observaciones De Antonio José Cavanilles, Martha Garcia
Homage to Alexander von Humboldt: Travels to and from Spain Throughout the Centuries / Homenaje a Alexander von Humboldt: Viajes hacia y desde España de todos los siglos
Epistolary activity dates to Ancient Greece in affinity with the Roman tradition in which the missive was the most efficient means of communication at a distance. An erudite knowledge of the subject was required since the content would be recorded in posterity. Polymathy and epistemology were therefore required in daily practice of writing encyclicals from the society of Medieval era up to the pinnacle of the epistolary genre during Humanism. The letter, therefore, implied the fact that the writer was out from the territory of the point of departure and the recipient of the correspondence was distant. This exegesis focuses …
