Hugo Chávez, El Camino Hagiográfico: Religión Y Bolivarianismo En La Construcción Discursiva Del Culto A Un Presidente, Lilia Malavé Conley
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
This dissertation examines the discursive construction of the political-religious cult surrounding Hugo Chávez through a theoretical and methodological approach that integrates Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). Its central objective is to identify and interpret the incorporation of elements from the Venezuelan religious imaginary–particularly from popular Christianity–into the symbolic configuration of Chávez as a sacred figure within official discourse. The corpus analyzed includes official transcripts from the television program Aló Presidente, as well as two animated short films titled Chávez Nuestro que Estás en el Cielo (“Our Chávez Who Art in Heaven”), broadcast on Venezuelan public …
A Story Of Oppression A Psychological And Creative Approach, Juan R. Morillo
A Story Of Oppression A Psychological And Creative Approach, Juan R. Morillo
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The aim of this project is to survey the manner in which oppression is expressed in selected works of literature. It is a topic that not only am I familiar with through my studies of literature and psychology, but one that I, as well as every Venezuelan expatriate has witnessed and felt for their country. The project focuses on social and political oppression, using the current Venezuelan crisis as a focal point, and selected literary sources as a framework. I will analyze dystopian classics such as George Orwell's 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, as well as Margaret Atwood’s The …

Islas De Resistencia: Pensamiento Archipielágico En Las Poéticas Canarias Y Caribeñas Del Siglo Xxi, Laura García García
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation explores contemporary literary manifestations in the Canary Islands and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, with a stronger focus on the islands of Tenerife and Puerto Rico. Through an archipelagic approach, this study delves into the analysis of Los lenguas cortadas (2020) by Cirilo Leal, Boat People (2005) by Mayra Santos-Febres, Panza de burro (2020) by Andrea Abreu and PR3 Aguirre (2018) by Marta Aponte Alsina. The analysis states that these literary works build alternative forms of affective archives of archipelagic memory. In this sense, the objects of study participate into a sort of “poetics of resistance,” resignifying racial, ethnic, and …

Rafael Cortijo’S Space Music: Sounds Of Caribbean Blackness, Marissel Hernandez-Romero
Third Stone
Black Puerto Rican musician Rafael Cortijo (1928-1982) is a key feature in Puerto Rican, Caribbean, and Latin American music. He is one of the few musicians celebrated internationally for his skills as a percussionist, orchestra leader, and composer. Despite this, his music is often described as as ‘noise’, or at least that was my memory growing up in a predominantly white community in Puerto Rico. This article proposes and theorizes the existence of a Hispanic Caribbean Space Music emerging at the same time of the Afrofuturist movement and to which Rafael Cortijo makes a great contribution. By doing this, I …

The Lettered Barriada: Workers, Archival Power, And The Politics Of Knowledge In Puerto Rico [Book Review], Mariel Acosta Matos
The Lettered Barriada: Workers, Archival Power, And The Politics Of Knowledge In Puerto Rico [Book Review], Mariel Acosta Matos
Publications and Research

Print Media And The Question Of Slavery In Cuba: Discursive Strategies In Barcelona’S La Flaca And Havana’S El Moro Muza And Don Junípero, Ana Garcia Chichester
Modern Languages & Literatures Articles
This article explores the portrayal of the first Cuban war of independence against Spain (Ten Years’ War, 1868–1878) in print media in both Spain (Barcelona) and in Cuba (Havana). The Spanish press portrayed official reports on the war as falsehood and denounced the exclusionary treatment of Cubans of African descent. The Havana print media, although careful to avoid direct references to participation in the war by former slaves, addressed the racial composition of the Cuban army in a series of images questioning revolutionary values. In their illustrations, both journals derided the aspiration of Cubans living in the United States, and …

Ephemeral Elsewheres: Locating Narratives Of Resignation, Resistance, And Refusal In The Poetry Of Black Cuban And Black Brazilian Women, Aidan Keys
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
This essay dissects the language of Latin American revolution and nationalism to locate the body of the black woman and the appropriation of her image. In two seemingly incommensurable radical movements—the Cuban Revolution (1952-1959) and the Brazilian Unified Black Movement (1978-)—the contributions of Black women are unevenly recognized. Reading the poetry of cubanas Nancy Morejón and Georgina Herrera and brasileiras Sônia Fátima and Esmeralda Ribeiro, this essay claims that in both contexts, the Black woman is marginalized to a geographic “elsewhere.” Expanding on this term, coined by scholar Carol Boyce Davies, this essay further identifies temporal and ephemeral “elsewheres.” The …

Nationless States And Stateless Beings: The Politics Of Identity And Citizenship In Claudio Mir’S Mondongo Scam And Cheech Marin’S Born In East L.A., Rebecca A. Barnes
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
In the colloquial sense of the term, the word citizen refers to an individual who belongs to a nation, either by birthright or by naturalization. Therefore, citizenship denotes a political and a social belonging, an ideological home, and, in most cases, a strong foundation for the development of one’s personal identity. However, since nations are inherently artificial structures, made only tangible in the present day by a few centuries of recorded history, a philosophical approach to the term citizen complicates this definition. Based off critics including Hannah Arendt, Homi Bhabha, Fernando Ortiz, and Jacques Derrida, this essay seeks to explore …

La Contribución De La Ópera Bufa Manita En El Suelo De Carpentier Y García Caturla En El Debate Primitivista De Principios Del Siglo Xx, Anna M. Martija Perez
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
The present work is an approach to Manita en el suelo, the only opera bufa that Alejo Carpentier created in collaboration with the Cuban musician Alejandro García Caturla. The genuine friendship that united Carpentier and Caturla was the result of their identification not only in their love for music, but also an accentuated interest in all things primitive, together with a deep sense of social justice. At the same time, they are also united by respect for the African heritage and the recognition that it should have in the history of Cuba. In Manita en el suelo, Carpentier …
