Autoras Ensombrecidas Al Final Del Renacimiento: María De Zayas Y Sotomayor Y Aemilia Lanyer, Marybeth Thommes

Research Honors

Research Honors

In this research project, I am investigating the differences in the US education system in regard to Spanish bilingual education. This research is rooted in the political and policy debate surrounding Dual Language Programs and Transitional Bilingual Programs, which blossomed during the Reagan administration in the 1980’s. More specifically, I am researching the differences between these two programs and their individual cognitive benefits. In order to examine these differences, I will compare them using two different populations: Bloomington, IL and Saint Charles, IL. Both of these areas have different populations as well as different offerings of bilingual support and education. …

El Lenguaje Del Autismo: Una Evaluación De La Terminología Autista En Dos Libros Españoles (The Language Of Autism: An Evaluation Of The Autistic Terminology Used In Two Spanish Books), Catherine Droesch Apr 2023

El Lenguaje Del Autismo: Una Evaluación De La Terminología Autista En Dos Libros Españoles (The Language Of Autism: An Evaluation Of The Autistic Terminology Used In Two Spanish Books), Catherine Droesch

Honors Projects

Actores Transnacionales: Un Estudio En Cinema Internacional, Lydia Hartlaub

Honors Projects

"Unos Seres Nacen Para Vivir": Un Análisis Psicosocial De Nada, Nathan Douglas Apr 2015

"Unos Seres Nacen Para Vivir": Un Análisis Psicosocial De Nada, Nathan Douglas

Honors Projects

Winner of the first Premio Nadal in 1945, Nada, the first published work of then-unknown author Carmen Laforet, has remained a captivating, yet elusive work of Spanish literature. Since its very publication, readers, critics, and even censors have debated the true emancipatory message (or lack there of) within the pseudo-autobiographical, confessional work. While the majority of critics maintain the novel’s characterization as a feminist, female bildungsroman, dissenters cite traces of palimpsestic ennui mediated by the novel’s complex narrative schema as reason to believe otherwise. This critical reading of Nada seeks to shed new light on these debates through …

A Gastronomic Map Of Don Quixote Part 2, Carolyn Nadeau Jan 2015

A Gastronomic Map Of Don Quixote Part 2, Carolyn Nadeau

Scholarship

Food metaphors, culinary motifs, and gastronomic inquiry play a significant role in the development of Cervantes most renowned novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Readers may immediately recall the second sentence of the novel that portrays Alonso Quijano by his weekly diet to know that food and identity are inextricably linked. Additionally, food representations enliven the pages with semiotic clues that reveal the characters’ state of being; themes of ethnic, class, and social identities; and cultural norms of breaking bread, sharing meals, and lively post prandial discussions. These representations often serve to destabilize the text and bring …

Los Rugrats Y Don Quijote De La Mancha: La Perspectiva Diferente Entre La Realidad Y La Fantastía, Kylene Wolfe Nov 2014

Los Rugrats Y Don Quijote De La Mancha: La Perspectiva Diferente Entre La Realidad Y La Fantastía, Kylene Wolfe

CrissCross

A Comparrision Between Formal Medical Spanish Terminology And The Terminology Used By Low-Income Hispanics, Kathryn Rothas, Christina Isabelli, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

It has been observed by Illinois Wesleyan students enrolled in the Medical Spanish course that when translating for patients in a clinical setting one of the two situations can occur: 1) the Spanish-speaking patient will use terminology unrecognizable by the student when describing their conditions or symptoms; or 2) the student translator will use terminology taught in their Medical Spanish course to describe conditions, symptoms and treatment instructions, but the terminology is unrecognizable by the Spanish-speaking patients. This miscommunication between the translator and the patient can lead to lack of treatment adherence or improper diagnosis due to a misinterpretation of …

Don Quijote A Través De La Literatura Infantil/Don Quijote Through Children’S Literature, Elizabeth Exo, Carolyn Nadeau, Faculty Advisor Apr 2013

Don Quijote A Través De La Literatura Infantil/Don Quijote Through Children’S Literature, Elizabeth Exo, Carolyn Nadeau, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The novel Don Quijote de la Mancha is a classic known throughout the centuries and has left behind such a legacy that no one can deny its importance in the world of literature. However, young readers are unable to immerse themselves in this classic unless through an adapted version of the original novel. Through an analysis of various children’s adaptations of Don Quijote de la Mancha, this investigation suggests that the most important themes of the novel, such as friendship, duality, and identity, are still preserved within the adaptations, although somewhat modified to reach a younger audience.

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Arguably one of the most widely acclaimed literary masterpieces, it is no surprise that Miguel de Cervantes’s El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha left a cultural legacy that has influenced the work of authors, artists, and filmmakers across the globe. Whether intentional of John Steinbeck or not, analysis of his literary work Of Mice and Men reveals various parallels between the two novels that extend from the complicated, transformative relationship between the two travelling protagonists of each novel to the lack of emphasis on female characters. A thorough evaluation of quotations, character interactions, and recurring themes and motifs …
