An exploration of cinematography, societal expectations, and artist collaboration, “Fake It!” challenges the traditional definition of art. Part one follows the journey of creating a music video for an original song titled “Fake It!” by the band Model City. Location, lighting, camera, and editing choices are explained and connected to the song's themes of teenage angst, regret, and a rejection of societal norms. Part two explores the process of creating art by translating the hexadecimal color values from the music video into a new musical composition. Se trata de una novela con características que la incluyen dentro de la ficción contemporánea colombiana que a su vez forma parte de la sicaresca: un concepto clave sobre violencia, criminalidad, derechos humanos y narcotráfico expresados en la novela colombiana.

Cleopatra and Doña Marina come from distinct time periods in world history— respectively, the declining Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt and the age of the Spanish conquest. Literature has been inspired by these historical figures, creating various interpretations of this Egyptian queen and Aztec translator. This article examines the poem “Autumnal,” by the influential Nicaraguan poet, Rubén Darío, within the literary and iconographic tradition of melancholy. “Autumnal” was one of a four-part series of poems devoted to each of the seasons and appeared in the first edition of Darío’s landmark book, Azul… (1888). The essay begins by identifying the melancholy subtext in the poem through comparison with a broad array of poems and visual artwork. John Milton’s “Il penseroso” proves especially significant in revealing the conclusion of the poem, in which the lyric voice experiences a blissful vision, to be a depiction of inspired melancholy. …

There is a well-recognised close relationship between creative and juridical writings. At times, authors of creative texts adapt juridical elements in the form of minor details, or broad thematic bases, so as to create convincing fictional realities. Alternatively, they use the same aspects to comment on socio-juridical problems in an ambiguous or ironic fashion. This study focuses on the history of these processes and, specifically, on certain key examples in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, seen in relation to multiple legal documents, including a late sixteenth-century manuscript that details punishments for erotic crimes.

Over the past several decades, the Spanish language has been considered secondary to English, specifically in the United States. However, this paper argues that Spanish is one of the primary languages in the country because it is the second most spoken language, despite efforts to maintain a monolingual nation. Due to the impact of capitalism, if one’s first language is not English, they are separated and viewed as inferior in society. Spanish Writing Learners’ Stances As Peer Reviewers, Emilia Illana-Mahiques, Carol Severino

This study explores the attitudes and perceptions about online peer review of 18 Spanish learners enrolled in a third-year college Spanish writing course. Students participated in peer review training, wrote a personal narrative, and completed two online peer review sessions before submitting their final narrative. Using data from questionnaires, interviews, a peer review simulation task, and the first author’s journal, this qualitative study investigates students’ approaches to peer review and the different practices they employ when commenting on their peers’ drafts. Results show that even though students receive the same training, they interpret and enact that training differently. Students position …

Este artículo analiza los usos del Imperfecto del indicativo en el español peruano amazónico, una variedad formada en situación de intenso contacto lingüístico. Típicamente el Imperfecto porta valor durativo por oposición al sentido puntual del pretérito, valor continuo en contraste al carácter delimitativo del segundo y valor indefinido en referencia a una situación pasada no específica, a diferencia del Pretérito que alude a la totalidad del evento (García Fernández, 2008; Cipria y Roberts, 2001, p. 300). This essay studies the ways in which Amazonian artist Roberto Evangelista’s art installation Ritos de Passagem served as Brazilian author Luiz Ruffato’s structural and thematic model for his revolutionary book Eles eram muitos cavalos. According to Ruffato’s interpretation, Evangelista’s installation represents a tangible, three-dimensional form that renders socioeconomic hardship and impoverishment within a consumer-ravaged society. In applying this model to Ruffato’s work of fiction, this essay aims to emphasize his focus on formal and narrative innovations within what Anne Ring Petersen defines as a “multiperspectival approach.” This approach allows Ruffato’s text to take on threedimensional volume and invite the …

In 2002, the residents of Aldeia da Luz left their village for the final time, displaced to make room for the Alqueva Dam, a massive regional hydropower and irrigation project almost half a century in the making. The Alqueva Multipurpose Project was marketed by the Portuguese government as a way to develop the impoverished region of the Alentejo and bring innovation to the agricultural sector. The village of Luz was the only physical obstacle to this goal and, therefore, its residents were dispossessed, sacrificed for the development of the greater Alentejo region. The various individual methods utilized by Hernán Cortés have been previously documented by multiple scholars. However, while the “tools” Cortés used—such as a reliance on legal precedent and religious allusions in the tradition of conquest rhetoric—to craft his narrative have been dissected, the use of those tools to create a narrative in letter format has not been discussed as much if at all by these scholars. While Cortés utilized previously established literary devices to prove his loyalty, his narrative was only as effective as it was because of his decision to place it in a literary format.
