Un Cuento Temprano De Fantasía Épica: “La Esclava Perfecta” (1872), De Federico De Castro, Y Las “Leyendas Del Antiguo Oriente” En España, Mariano Martín Rodríguez Dr.
Alambique.

La Herencia Del Tema Minero En La Ciencia Ficción: Iris De Edmundo Paz Soldán, Lilia Yvette Valencia Sánchez, Gabriel Osuna Osuna
Alambique.

El Último Sueño, A Novel Of Anthropocenic Posthumanistic Sensibility, Miguel Angel Albújar-Escuredo
Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
This paper analyzes the novel El último sueño (López 2018) and concludes that it is an optimal example of a new interpretation of Posthumanism whereon the portrayed modern subjects seek to retrieve the Humanist logic lacking in our apocalyptic times, giving birth in the process to a new fictional representation of Posthumanism in the times of the Anthropocene.

Ciudad, Movimiento Y Transformación: "23 Segundos" En Dos Tiempos, Mariana Pensa
South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Desde El Fuego Que En Mí Arde: Performance, Literatura Y Cine Afro-Latinoamericano Producidos Por Mujeres Afrodescendientes En Perú, Cuba Y Brasil (1960–2000), Elena Ekatherina Chavez Goycochea
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines different films, literary, and performance art pieces created by contemporary afro-descendant women from Peru, Cuba, and Brazil after the sixties with emphasis on the most relevant works of Conceição Evaristo, Sara Gómez, Victoria Santa Cruz, and Lucía Charún-Illescas. I focus my research on the crucial role these artists played in the cultural identity formation of Latin America when inserting ‘race’ as a category of socio-political analysis and cultural production. How did their films, performances, and texts challenge national narratives and imaginaries after 1960? Although in the sixties, women improved their civil rights in different countries, the ‘mujer …
Discursos Institucionales Y Manuales De Texto De La American Association Of Teachers Of Spanish (1912–1944): Un Estudio De La Historia Política De La Enseñanza Del Español En Estados Unidos, Inés Vañó García
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study focuses on the political history of the teaching of Spanish in the United States during the first half of 20th century. Drawing from the history of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish – AATS (1926) as a normative agent, along with key linguistic instruments created by its well-known members, this research examines its role in the creation and shaping of a new academic field in which two ideological processes were key in the configuration of this disciplinary space: hispanism and panamericanism. By identifying a collection of teaching materials, this project explores the normative model and methodologies that …

Cantidades Hechizadas Y Silogísticas Del Sobresalto: La Secreta Ciencia De José Lezama Lima, Ómar Vargas
Cantidades Hechizadas Y Silogísticas Del Sobresalto: La Secreta Ciencia De José Lezama Lima, Ómar Vargas
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Arguably the most important Cuban writer of the twentieth century, José Lezama Lima (1910–1976) is well-known as a poet, essayist, cultural promoter, and novelist, but not as a scientist. In fact, there is no evidence of any concrete relationship between him and any pure science discipline. How then it is possible to establish connections between Lezama’s literary works and the disciplines of science? How are certain scientific discoveries and developments, such as the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, modern logic, thermodynamics, or the big bang theory, embraced in the cultural imaginary of Cuba during the first half of the twentieth …
Subjetividad E Intersubjetividad De Los Diminutivos En -It En El Español Amazónico Peruano, Margarita Jara Yupanqui
Subjetividad E Intersubjetividad De Los Diminutivos En -It En El Español Amazónico Peruano, Margarita Jara Yupanqui
Department of World Languages Faculty Research

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Repensando La Discapacidad En España Y Latinoamérica: La Producción Cultural Hispánica De Autores/As Con Diversidad Funcional En Los Siglos Xx Y Xxi, Montserrat Fuente-Camacho
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Género Y Sexualidad En Seis Novelas Del Siglo Xxi, Sandra Chang Raak
Género Y Sexualidad En Seis Novelas Del Siglo Xxi, Sandra Chang Raak
Dissertations
From its inception Latin American literature has used gender and sexuality as rhetorical devices to approach the topic of cultural identity. For instance, Hernán Cortés in his Cartas de Relación embodies a type of masculinity that overdetermined the lives of the Amerindian people. Centuries later, the modernismo movement headed by Rubén Darío reacted to a Latin American societal shift towards the prevalence of a materialistic culture brought about by the advent of industrial civilization. During the 1960s Latin American literature experienced a rapid blooming that has come to be known as El Boom. Both landmarks, modernism and El Boom …
The Representation Of Syrian Refugee Women In The Spanish Media. Comparative Study Of The Profile Projected By The Media, The Imaginary Of The Spanish Society And The Identity Of Syrian Refugee Women., María Costea
International Programs
This paper analyzes the media representation of Syrian refugee women projected by the newspapers ABC, El País and eldiario.es, differentiating the nuances of the stereotyping of this group according to the ideological line of the media. The profiles obtained from this analysis are contrasted, through a triangulated research, with the imaginary of the Spanish society and the real profile of these women to elucidate the degree of concordance.
The Minatory Minotaur: Demythologizing Myth In “The House Of Asterion”, Evan Chiovari
The Minatory Minotaur: Demythologizing Myth In “The House Of Asterion”, Evan Chiovari
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Recent critics of Jorge Luis Borges’s “The House of Asterion” (1947) have traced the author’s revisions in the original manuscript, charting his changing arrangement of information through the text. This essay investigates the information itself through structuralist and historicist theory. A structuralist reading analyzes Asterion’s worldview and shows how various narrators dock the integrity of his voice. Historicism probes aspects of religion, biology, and architecture to limn the true complexity of Asterion’s ties with society. Together, these theories reveal a trove of intricate intrigue and doubt. In this study I examine how Asterion, a reinvention of the Minotaur, is painstakingly …

You have learned two words in a second language just by reading the title of the book. Think about that for a moment and reflect upon your prior foreign language experiences. Often, students enter language classes with previously acquired skills, be they from secondary school or another college. Many say, “I have studied Spanish for years and don’t know how to speak or write it,” while others are a bit anxious about taking a second language for the first time, but all are overwhelmed by the expensive textbooks and online packages that don’t seem to be practical or relevant. We …

We want you to know this book has been designed with many types of learners in mind. Our goals were to address the need for students to achieve the ability to communicate in written and spoken form. Disrupting The (Post) Neoliberal Order In Latin America Through The Representation Of Fictional Corporate Office Narratives In Argentina And Mexico (2007-2010), Juliana Todescan
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Due to the expansion of the neoliberal and global order in Latin America in the 1990s, national states and citizens are subjected to the free market interests regulated and managed by for profit corporations and the financial industry. Considering this a critical change in the social organization of Latin America, I compare narratives from Argentina and Mexico that imagine cosmopolitan cities being colonized by the corporate logic of profit. My analysis focuses on the representation of low level office workers in Antonio Ortuño’s novel Recursos humanos (2007), Guillermo Saccomanno’s novel El oficinista (2010), and Aníbal Jarkowski’s El trabajo (2007), and …

En Busca De La Juventud Perdida, Reconciliación Y Desagravio En Carta Al Padre De Jesús Aguado, Kathryn A. Everly
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Jesús Aguado's recent book, Carta al padre (2016), deals openly with both physical and emotional trauma suffered at the hands of toxic masculinity. The poetic voice vindicates his younger self, abused by the father, through the written word that transfers power to the weak and disenfranchised. Lacanian naming and patriarchal structures (family, language) become transparent through Aguado's unique poetic sensibility.

Distribución De Las Funciones Retóricas De Las Citas En Los Apartados Del Trabajo Fin De Máster Escrito En Español Y En Inglés, David Sánchez-Jiménez
Publications and Research
This study correlates with a research study published in the journal Pragmalingüística, in which the contrastive use of the rhetorical functions of citations in master’s theses in Spanish and English was studied. The main objective pursued by this new research is to determine which rhetorical functions are used most frequently in the different parts of a master’s thesis and what these can accomplish in each part of the text. Following Petrić (2007), a computerized textual analysis of the rhetorical function of citation was used to study this phenomenon in a corpus of sixteen (16) theses of which eight (8) were …

La Transtextualidad En El Mal Querer De Rosalía, Susan Shelton, Susan Shelton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Static Code Analysis And Pattern Recognition Algorithm-Driven, Quantitative, Mathematical Model-Oriented Risk Assessment Framework Of Cloud-Based Health Information Applications, Dennis B. Park
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to a survey, the healthcare industry is one of the least cloud-adopting industries. The low adoption reflects the healthcare industry's ongoing concerns about the security of the cloud. Business applications, according to another survey, are among the most vulnerable components of business information systems. Many risk assessment frameworks available today, particularly for health information applications, require significant customization before they can be used. This study created a new framework to assess cloud risks specifically for their health information applications, utilizing data-driven risk assessment methodologies to avoid surveys, interviews, and meetings for data collection. For the feasibility study, the open-source …

Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly
Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Libertarias (1996) and Land and Freedom (1995) explore the complex situation
of women militia during the Spanish Civil War. A queer reading of the female
body in these films highlights wartime female masculinity (Halberstam) and
female solidarity. In renegotiating worn expectations of sexuality and gender,
the films question and ultimately redefine the wartime docudrama genre. The
queering of gender and genre leads to alternative versions of history that upend
the very idea of historical accuracy. The female bodies in the films transgress
entrenched binary gender norms, thus creating a uniquely queer representation
of female solidarity in the docudrama genre.
