A family of field mice, who live in a stone wall on an abandoned farm, have been gathering supplies for the winter. Frederick, however, has not lifted a finger. They accuse him of being lazy, but he claims he’s gathering things just as important as food- the sun’s rays, colors, and words. When winter comes, the food runs out, but Frederick’s unique supplies and poetic delivery sustain the mice.

A young snail tells his father that he wants to have the biggest house in the world. His father tells him a story to explain why it is better to have a smaller house. In the story a young snail learns how to make his shell grow large and sprout cone-shaped domes in all colors. When the other snails move on to find more food, the snail with the biggest house in the world is left alone and finally fades away. When anyone asked the little snail why he had such a small house, he would tell them the story …

This is the story of a chameleon who is sad that he does not have a color of his own. He changes color wherever he goes. He tries to remain one color by staying on a leaf – but the leaf changes color with the seasons. He meets another chameleon who suggests they travel together. So they were green together, and yellow together and violet together and lived happily ever after.
