Truth And Consequences: Renaud Camus And The Personal, Brian G. Kennelly Apr 2002

Truth And Consequences: Renaud Camus And The Personal, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

A year before his untimely death in 1980, in the days before the internet, before even the minitel bleu or rose, Roland Barthes compared the personals – at that time still print-based – of two popular French dailies. On the one hand, the advertisements in Le Nouvel Observateur belied artifice, he noted. The information their writers shared publicly with potential mates revealed a certain banal artificiality. Despite the obvious effort the creators of the ads had put into catching the eye of possible matches, in spite of the care with which they had weighed the words before ultimately selecting …

Metaphors Of Mathematics In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein Apr 2002

Metaphors Of Mathematics In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Mathematical metaphors are a distinctive and characteristic feature of Corneille’s theater, closely tied to his dramatic aesthetics. I divide these metaphors into two groups, identities and combinatorics. The field of identities deals with different kinds of equations, from the level of language, where elements are equated or placed in some other relationship that can be expressed mathematically, to the level of plot, where, for example, the search for identity (e.g. who is Héraclius?) resembles an algebraic equation. Combinatorics involves the arrangements and combinations of elements, and finds its greatest application here in the question of the constitution of couples to …

Marivaux's Comedy Of Loss: La Double Inconstance, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Apr 2002

Marivaux's Comedy Of Loss: La Double Inconstance, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Marivaux's treatment of losing love in one of his favorite plays, La Double Inconstance (1723), is a double tour de force. Not content to show that grieving or offering sympathy for lost love can be intimately tied to the awakening to love that is at the center of his theater, he also turns them to comic advantage. The classic accounts of the role of sensibility in Marivaux, such as Ruth Jamieson's, have pointed out how love strains against pride in his plays as lovers summon amour-propre to resist acknowledging that they are in love (97,105) and noted the comic …

Le Palimpseste Et Le Roman Africain: Le Cas Des Romans Xala De Sembène Ousmane Et La Grève Des Bàttu D’Aminata Sow Fall, Marie-Chantal Kalisa

Uxoricidas, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2002

Uxoricidas, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Zwei Deutsche Weihnachtsmarkte: Dauer Im Wechsel, Leslie S. Hartzog

Theses & Honors Papers

Sophonisbe's Seduction: Corneille Writing Against Mairet, Nina Ekstein Jan 2002

Sophonisbe's Seduction: Corneille Writing Against Mairet, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Rewriting the subjects of tragedies was so common throughout the seventeenth century as to be a defining characteristic of the period. While originality was the rule in comedy, in tragedy it was disdained. The arrangement of the action, the power and beauty of the language. the originality of the articulation of the more or less ancient plot: these were the badges of the tragic virtuoso. Rewriting was both a compliment to the predecessor and an act of appropriation, a theft not so much of the subject as of authority over the subject. The tragic playwright rewrote with a presumption of …

Women And Marriage In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein Jan 2002

Women And Marriage In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Marriage is ubiquitous in Corneille's theater: there is not a single one of his plays in which marriage is not an issue, in which at least one union is not proposed. In part this state of affairs is due to the fact that the vast majority of Corneille's characters are marriageable. While marriageability is hardly unusual among the young, Corneille inevitably takes his characters at precisely the dramatic moment when the choice of life partner is to be made. For Corneille, that moment is not even limited to the young; not infrequently older characters are in need of a spouse …

Codeswitching In Antonio Muñoz Molina’S Carlota Fainberg: Determiner Gender And Noun Phrase Status, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Codeswitching between determiner and noun in which the language of …

Catalunya Invisible: Contemporary Drama In Barcelona, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

During the winter of 2000, Lluís Pasqual staged a Catalan version of Anton Chekov's The Cherry Orchard at Barcelona's Teatre Lliure, the historic home of Catalonia's most stable, accomplished, and distinguished repertory theatre company. In Chekov's play, Madame Lyobov Andreyevna Ranyevskaya, an emblem of the fading elegance and dwindling supremacy of the Russian aristocracy, is compelled by her situation of financial despair to sell her estate and cherry orchard to the nouveau-riche Lopakhin and then return to Paris on the eve of the Revolution. The orchard that was once admired for its beauty eventually will be destroyed in order to …

Análisis Narrativo Del Recuerdo En 'El Regreso' Y 'Del Cemento. La Trampa De Cemento', De Martín De Ugalde, Iker González-Allende, Joseba Pérez Moreno

[Introduction To] Race And The Rise Of Standard American, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jan 2002

[Introduction To] Race And The Rise Of Standard American, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Bookshelf

This study examines the effect of race-consciousness upon the pronunciation of American English and upon the ideology of standardization in the twentieth century. It shows how the discourses of prescriptivist pronunciation, the xenophobic reaction against immigration to the eastern metropolises - especially New York - and the closing of the western frontier together constructed an image of the American West and Midwest as the locus of proper speech and ethnicity. This study is of interest to scholars and students in linguistics, American studies, cultural studies, Jewish studies, and studies in race, class, and gender.

"Introduction" To The Shape Of Change: Essays In Early Modern Literature And La Fontaine In Honor Of David Lee Rubin, Anne L. Birberick, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

Since Michel Foucault’s The Archeology of Knowledge gained widespread critical recognition in the late 1960s, the concept of change has held a privileged position in the discourse of literary and cultural studies. Concerned with disruptions, transformations, and upheavals, scholars have focused on those moments of rupture when the present breaks with the past, when originality displaces convention, when inventio repudiates imitatio. This emphasis on aesthetic and epistemic shifts has all too often resulted in the neglect of more traditional issues having to do with problems of cultural development, evolution, and influence. It has also overlooked the idea of reading and …

Variations On The Virgin: Anne De Marquets’S Depiction Of Mary In The Sonets Spirituels, Russell J. Ganim Jan 2002

Variations On The Virgin: Anne De Marquets’S Depiction Of Mary In The Sonets Spirituels, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

This paper explores the manner in which Anne de Marquets’s (1533– 1588) Sonets Spirituels (published posthumously in 1605) reshapes conventional portraits of the Virgin Mary. A Dominican nun at the Royal Priory in Poissy, Marquets, like many Baroque Catholic poets, follows Church tradition in glorifying Mary as a maternal symbol of chastity and faith. Yet, unlike Gabrielle de Coignard (OEuvres chrestiennes, 1594), Jean de La Ceppède (Théorèmes, 1613, 1622), or other of her lyric peers, Marquets depicts the Virgin as a subjective, intellectual near-deity whose role occasionally borders on the messianic. The basic approach of this …

Attitudes Toward Spanish Language Maintenance Or Shift (Lmls) In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of South Texas, Hugo A. Macias, Pamela L. Anderson, Ralph Carlson

This article considers attitudes among Spanish/English bilinguals of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas toward Spanish language maintenance or language shift to English. The investigation was undertaken to replicate and compare results with similar data collected in 1982. Since the area has changed socially in the intervening years and is now the third-fastest-growing metropolitan-suburban area in the United States. it seems prudent to reconsider the sociolinguistic attitude changes that may also have occurred. Data collection. sampling. the indices. and the analysis of the 1982 study were replicated as nearly as possible for the present study. Results of the analysis …

Uncertainty In Corneille's Héraclius, Nina Ekstein Oct 2001

Uncertainty In Corneille's Héraclius, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Scholars agree that Héraclius (1646) occupies the extreme point of plot complication in the Cornelian oeuvre. Numerous events have occurred prior to the action of the play, events that are necessary to the spectators' understanding of what transpires onstage. Twenty years before the play opens, Phocas assassinated the emperor Maurice as well as his sons and took his throne. Léontine, the royal governess, switched the youngest of Maurice's sons, Héraclius, with her own son, thus sacrificing the latter's life so that the royal blood of Maurice might survive. Not long after, Léontine made a second substitution, this time switching …

The Impact Of Irish Ireland On Young Poland, 1890-1918, John A. Merchant

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

John. A. Merchant examines the impact of a contemporary cultural movement, Irish Ireland, on its Polish counterpart, Young Poland. He traces the reception of Irish literature in the form of translations of works by W. B. Yeats and John Millington Synge in Poland through translations by Jan Kasprowicz, Zenon "Miriam" Przesmycki and others as well as through a variety of cultural commentaries by Polish critics and by means of stage productions of Irish plays by theater directors, such as Tadeusz Pawlikowski.

The Debate Over Annexing Texas And The Emergence Of Manifest Destiny, Lyon Rathbun Oct 2001

The Debate Over Annexing Texas And The Emergence Of Manifest Destiny, Lyon Rathbun

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Scholars have long understood that the ideology of manifest destiny congealed out of the millennial ideals embedded in American culture. However, they have not fully appreciated that manifest destiny only became a national ideology by overwhelming the arguments that were first voiced during the Monroe administration to resist the incorporation of Texas into the Union. Understanding how the secular ideals of the classical republican tradition were used to resist the inclusion of Texas can help us understand the crystallization of manifest destiny into a theologized ideology in the 1840s.

Reading Bulgakov's The Master And Margarita From The Perspective Of Hinduism, Radha Balasubramanian Jun 2001

Reading Bulgakov's The Master And Margarita From The Perspective Of Hinduism, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita (1966-67) has been praised highly for both its literary merit and its spiritual significance. Many critical studies explain the complex nature of the interrelationship between the natural and supernatural in the novel. The unexpected roles that otherworldly beings play in the novel, the resulting satire, and the fantastic in the plot create a certain inevitable puzzlement about the structure and meaning of the novel. Attempts to explain the implications of the spiritual elements underpinning the fantastic span through various belief systems, but given the complexity of Bulgakov's novel, a coherent, conclusive explanation has been …

Review Of Das Straßburger Eulenspiegelbuch: Studien Zu Entstehungs-Geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen Der Ältesten Drucküberlieferung, By Jürgen Schulz-Grobert, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jun 2001

Review Of Das Straßburger Eulenspiegelbuch: Studien Zu Entstehungs-Geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen Der Ältesten Drucküberlieferung, By Jürgen Schulz-Grobert, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Schulz-Grobert argues that scholars' pursuit of a phantom Low German original, and their "fixation" on Herman Bote as its author, have directed scholarly attention away from the role the editors in Strassburg played in its production. While TE scholarship to date is in agreement that a Strassburg editor had a hand in the final version of the book, Schulz-Grobert argues that the circle of humanists and literati associated with Grüninger's press in Strassburg were alone responsible for producing the book. There is no need to assume the existence of a Low German original, he states, nor does the "ERMAN B" acrostic, …

Separation, Mourning, And Consolation In La Route D'Altamont, Thomas M. Carr Jr. May 2001

Separation, Mourning, And Consolation In La Route D'Altamont, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

In discussing Bonheur d'occasion Patrick Coleman has identified Gabrielle Roy's difficulty finding a vehicle to convey convincingly her insight that "an awareness of separation is a necessary condition of any moment of real connection" as one of her chief esthetic problems (77). Her successful negotiation of this tension in La Route d'Altamont owes much to presenting consolation as an antidote to separation. First, rather than deny the reality of separation, consolation mediates between it and union by allowing Roy to portray separation coexisting with communion; even the most stable consolations must be constantly renewed since consolation is more a process …
