Constructing Authority In Lope De Vega's Egloga A Claudio: Self-Referentiality, Literary Judgment, And Ethics, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

The poetry of Lope de Vega has most often been analyzed for its treatment of themes such as love, religious devotion, or autobiographical introspection. However, one other key aspect of his poetry, especially of his longer poetical works (such as his epistolas and eglogas), is the engagement of literature and ethical concerns often related to the art of writing poetry. The purpose of this study is to examine one such work, the Egloga a Claudio (1631), a lengthy poem which normally should be classified as an epistola, for its role as l literary vehicle for passing judgment on …

Review Of Tristan L’Hermite: Oeuvres Complètes. Iii: Poésie (Ii). Volume Publié Sous La Direction De Jean-Pierre Chauveau, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

This effort marks the second volume of poetry in a five-set edition of complete works consisting of Tristan’s prose, poetry and tragedies, as well as other plays and the Plaidoyers historiques. The present volume represents the culmination of an extensive undertaking by Champion and by noted Tristan scholars to render the Baroque author’s known works more accessible to researchers, students and the literate public. By any measure, the results are eminently satisfying both in terms of the volume in question and the entire project. This volume centres on texts composed and published mainly in the period afterwards. The principal …

Théâtre Et Théâtralité Chez Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds Jan 2005

Théâtre Et Théâtralité Chez Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds

Globalisation And 'La Pièce De Cent Sous': Balzac's Nation-State, Marshall C. Olds Jan 2005

Globalisation And 'La Pièce De Cent Sous': Balzac's Nation-State, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Seen from an Olympian perspective, globalisation in today's world denotes the use of a standard model to establish relationships economic, cultural, and moral—across peoples in the absence of national boundaries capable of restraining the formation of such ties. From the national, or local, perspective, it is the invasive imposition of foreign influence in the form of a single model. From either vantage point, change and adaptation are the order of the day. Take-overs of one culture by another, whether hostile or friendly, are not historical novelties; what seems to distinguish globalisation is its planetary scope and impetus to take over …

La Transformación De La Visión De John Quincy Adams Sobre Mexico, Lyon Rathbun

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

The Relationship Between Candidate Sex And Pronoun Usage In A Louisiana Governor's Race, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill

Faculty Publications

This study explores the usage of pronouns in two political debates by ten candidates (seven "1ale, three female) in the 1995 Louisiana governor ·s race. The purpose of the study was to exa, nine whether patterns associated with "1ale and fe"1ale pronoun usage held in an environment where males and fe"1ales had the same comrnunicative needs. Proforms were exa"1ined to deterrnine if they were functioning inclusively (speaker including the addressee), a pattern associated with female usage, or exclusively (speaker excluding the addressee), a pattern associated with "1ale usage. Visiones Del Desencanto: Nostalgia Y Melancolía En El Cine De Fernando Fernán-Gómez Y José Luis Garci, Oscar Pereira Zazo

Visual Culture: The Later Mallarmé And Japonisme, Marshall C. Olds Sep 2004

Visual Culture: The Later Mallarmé And Japonisme, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Like his painter-contemporaries, Mallarmé’s attention to japonisme was to a visual phenomenon. Like them, he had a strong visual sense, and one could argue that even the early poems that tried to apprehend nothingness did so as if the problem were a visual one even if the results were more the ideas of things seen, rather than the creation of images. His visual orientation did change dramatically, however, by the time of La Dernière Mode in 1874, readying him for the acculturation to be provided first by Manet, and then by others, notably Whistler. The esthetics of japonisme is a …

Rewriting, Rereading Récidive, Brian G. Kennelly Jul 2004

Rewriting, Rereading Récidive, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

Author of some dozen works of homoerotic fiction, two polemical essays, and recipient of the 1973 Prix Médicis1, Tony Duvert published his first novel Récidive in 1967. Seven years later he rewrote it, ultimately publishing a much shorter version in 1976 - which for reviewer A. Thiher resembles what the prose of Jean Genet might have become were it to have been rewritten by Alain Robbe-Grillet. This disturbing work by one of France's most aggressively homosexual writers, a self-proclaimed "pédhomophile" (L'Enfant 21), has largely escaped critical attention. In the only study to focus on Récidive to date, …

Native Speakers' Attitudes Toward The Use Of Spanish By Non-Native Speakers: From George W. To J. Lo, Laura Callahan Jun 2004

Native Speakers' Attitudes Toward The Use Of Spanish By Non-Native Speakers: From George W. To J. Lo, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

This investigation of native speakers' attitudes toward the use of Spanish by non-native speakers considers the following questions: Do native speakers consider the public use of Spanish by non-native speakers to be inappropriate? Do Latino non-native speakers provoke a more favorable response? Do native speakers believe Latinos have an obligation to know Spanish? What factors correlate with native and heritage speakers' attitudes toward ethnicity and language choice? Data were collected via a questionnaire distributed to students at post-secondary institutions in ten states. The findings provide insights into the attitudes of native and heritage speakers, a rapidly growing population in the …

Forms Of Address In Romanian, Eduard C. Hanganu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In their research on pronouns of address in German, French, Italian and Spanish, Brown and Gilman (1960) collected data indicating that these four languages used two levels of pronouns of address (formal and informal) governed by two social semantics (power and solidarity). Further research on American English (Brown and Ford 1961; Slobin 1968; Ervin-Tripp 1972), Italian (Bates and Benigni 197 5), French and Spanish (Lambert and Tucker 1976) and Greek and Latin (Dickey 1996; 2002) confirmed Brown and Gilman's (1960) conclusions. Lambert and Tucker (1976), however, argued that the dual semantic model proposed by Brown and Gilman (1960) was too …

The Director’S Cut: Baroque Aesthetics And Modern Stagings Of The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud Apr 2004

The Director’S Cut: Baroque Aesthetics And Modern Stagings Of The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The last twenty-five years have witnessed a relative explosion in the number of staged productions of Spanish comedias. Whether the performances take place in Madrid, Almagro, New York, or El Paso, the experience has changed forever the way those who have attended performances view plays previously known only by reaing [sic] the text. One cannot fail to have been affected by the interaction between literature and theater, between professors and directors, between text and performance. A debate that has arisen as a result of this spectator's experience, especially after the production of a particularly well-known comedia, …

Well-Structured Texts Help Second-Year German Students Learn To Narrate, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 2004

Well-Structured Texts Help Second-Year German Students Learn To Narrate, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The past twenty years have seen a significant paradigm shift in foreign language pedagogy from measuring language achievement (based on a defined and finite curriculum, such as a textbook chapter or a grammar lesson) to measuring proficiency (general competence in the foreign language independent of a defined curriculum). Building on the work done previously in language testing by government language schools, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (1986) sought to reach consensus about describing and measuring language abilities. These Guidelines give generalized descriptions of abilities at four levels of proficiency (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior). With the widespread recognition of these Guidelines have …

Benito Pérez Galdós, Harriet Stevens Turner Jan 2004

Benito Pérez Galdós, Harriet Stevens Turner

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

In Galdós' time, the tensions between such diverse phenomena as coins and credit, free trade and protectionist tariffs, factory work and domestic economy, masculine and feminine, and private and public exacerbated friction among peoples—those of "pueblo" and rural origins, whose voices rasped and whose bright colors raked the eye, and a nascent, insecure bourgeosie who, fearful of the masses, strove to imitate the aristocracy. Old and new converged also with the question of suffrage and citizenship to aggravate social malaise and political upheavals—Carlist wars, palace intrigues, the Revolution of 1868 and overthrow of Queen Isabel, the brief reign of Amadeo …

The Teenage Dissent Of Newman And Unamuno: Conscience As A Safeguard Against Coercive Manipulation, Kevin T. Fagan Jan 2004

The Teenage Dissent Of Newman And Unamuno: Conscience As A Safeguard Against Coercive Manipulation, Kevin T. Fagan

World Languages and Cultures

Teenagers seem easy targets for despotic groups, such as cults. Moral conscience, however, may be a dike against a sea of despotism. John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno were giant defenders of conscience in their respective cultures. Their philosophies and phenomenologies of conscience depict conscience as supreme in the mind of the ordinary person, though subject to pressures, even death. This notion becomes alive in the deep religious crisis and conversion of their adolescence, marked by a sense of personal divine experience, confidence in final predestination or holy trust, and an ethical commitment. Both men, however, dissent from their …

Corneille's Absent Characters, Nina Ekstein Jan 2004

Corneille's Absent Characters, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The relationship between presence and absence in theater is intertwined and complex. For Kibédi Varga, a work of art invariably signifies absence in that it proposes an image, a representation, rather than the thing itself (341-42). This is obviously true of theater. At the same time, theater is essentially about presence. The empty stage is a space that derives its potential for force and meaning from the expectation of live bodies engaged in concrete actions there. Perhaps more to the point, theater is about the dialectical relationship between absence and presence. According to Fuchs, "theatre is ever the presence of …

El Exilio Como Viaje Y Destino Final En La Poesía De Evocación Y De Deseo De Ernestina De Champourcin, Iker González-Allende Jan 2004

El Exilio Como Viaje Y Destino Final En La Poesía De Evocación Y De Deseo De Ernestina De Champourcin, Iker González-Allende

Scatology, The Last Taboo: Introduction To Fecal Matters In Early Modern Literature And Art, Jeff Persels, Russell J. Ganim Jan 2004

Scatology, The Last Taboo: Introduction To Fecal Matters In Early Modern Literature And Art, Jeff Persels, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

This collection of essays was provoked by what its editors considered to be a curious lacuna: the relative academic neglect of the copious and ubiquitous scatological rhetoric of Early Modem Europe, here broadly defined as the representation of the process and product of elimination of the body’s waste products (feces, urine, flatus, phlegm, vomitus). Our most educated forebears, different from ourselves, did not disdain it — if such proof may be found in the mere proliferation of examples — and, further, employed it in all manner of works, not just in the crude jokes of comic ephemera. This neglect led …

Entre La Modestia Y El Orgullo: Las Coordenadas Metapoéticas De Carolina Coronado, Iker González-Allende

Eugenio O Proclamación De La Primavera, De García Serrano: Narrativa Falangista Durante La Guerra Civil, Iker González-Allende
