Clergie , Clerkly Studium , And The Medieval Literary History Of Chréétien De Troyes's Romances, Levilson C. Reis
Modern Languages & Cultures Faculty Scholarship
This article traces the development of medieval literary history across the thirteenth century through manuscript readings of Chréétien de Troyes's romances. Redefining clergie as the clerkly pursuit of learning, the author argues that scribes played an important role in shaping Chréétien's romances and establishing their place in medieval literary history. Examining manuscript collections centred on Cligéés, the author delineates synchronic and diachronic shifts in the organization and presentation of Chréétien's manuscripts, evaluating the roles that different scribes and compilers played in the formation of a Chréétien corpus and the development of a romance genre.

Transatlantic Fuentes: Between ‘The Two Shores’ Of Pluriculturality And Glossocentrism, Alberto Ribas-Casasayas
Modern Languages & Literature
The cultural program that Jerónimo de Aguilar pronounces at the end of Carlos Fuentes's short story “The Two Shores” appears to be inconsistent with the fundamentals of democratic liberalism and multiculturalism upon which they are ostensibly based. Furthermore, cultural visions like those in “The Two Shores” lend signifying imagery and empower cultural institutions, the media, and political authorities to exert symbolic violence upon minorities, thereby negating the multiculturalism that such visions claim to be promoting.

Generation Of 1914 In Spain, Iker González-Allende
Generation Of 1914 In Spain, Iker González-Allende
Spanish Language and Literature Papers
This group of Spanish writers wrote in the period between modernism and the Generation of 1898 and the 1920s avant-garde tendencies. It has also been called novecentismo (in Catalan noucentisme) to refer to these authors' different, innovative understanding of literature and art. "1914" was chosen to label this generation because it marked the outbreak of World War I and because José Ortega y Gasset, the movement's main figure, delivered a talk that year on old and new politics.

Universal Identities And Local Realities: Young Poland's (Mis)Readings Of Synge, John A. Merchant
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The problems Young Poland experienced in understanding the work of John Millington Synge were informed by precisely the same kind of behaviors that Daniel Corkery described in his argument for a truly native Irish national literature in the 1930s. Overcome by a strong sense of self, Poles were not fully able to appreciate the complexities and nuances of Synge's work and by extension, the Irish-Ireland movement. In the end, then, Young Poland was incapable of really understanding the Irish, and so the best they could do was to associate with them. As a result, Poles may have been able to …

Suwako Watanabe
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Abstract
This paper takes on issues related to the assessment in Content-Based Instruction (CBI). The first point talks about the research needs for Japanese CBI in regards to issues over assessment. The second point presents assessment strategies towards implementation of CBI. There have been a few reports from research studies that have demonstrated the gains in one’s language ability, such as in Spanish and Indonesian. However, very little is reported on the effect of CBI in Japanese. CBI is receiving increasing attention in the field of second/foreign language education. It is therefore critical to investigate the effect …

Castilian Transcodic Markers In Internet Catalan : Analysis Of Generic, Regional And Linguistic Factors, Craig Stokes
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation is a study of Castilian transcodic markers in the Catalan written on the Internet. Thirty Castilian transcodic markers representing five categories were run through the interface of the Corpus d'Ús del Català a la Web (CucWeb) to collect information in order to conduct both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The major research questions to be answered deal with the absolute and relative frequencies of these transcodic markers in the CucWeb and the factors behind the production of these non-standard forms. In addition to the frequency of the Castilian transcodic markers in the CucWeb, the initial study provides qualitative analysis …

Leo Tolstoy From 1901–2010 In Two Leading English-Language Newspapers In India, Radha Balasubramanian
Russian Language and Literature Papers
On May 30, 1901 The Hindu published its first lengthy editorial on Count Leo Tolstoy. It was followed by a personal letter to Tolstoy on June 13, 1901 from A. Ramaseshan, publicist and editor of the journal The Arya out of Madras. This seminal letter set the stage for a steady correspondence between Tolstoy and many Indians from different walks of life, the most prominent among them being M. K. Gandhi (1869-1948), who, as a political and ideological leader of India during the Indian Independence Movement, wrote to the Russian writer between 1909-1910.

Born in Seville, he is considered one of the most outstanding poets in 20th-century Spain and the linchpin poet of Spain's Generation of 1898. After spending time in Paris, he worked as a French teacher in Soria, and later lived in Segovia and Madrid. To escape Francoist troops at the end of the Spanish Civil War, Machado went into exile in Collioure, France, dying there soon after. In his pocket was found his last poem: "Estos días azules y este sol de la infancia" ("These azure days and this sun of childhood"). For Machado, poetry served to capture the essence …

Still Free, Still Alive: Images Of Haitian Collective Values Portrayed Through Child Characters In Lamartine’S Toussaint Louverture And Agnant’S Alexis D’Haïti, Vanessa C. Marcano
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this paper, I argue that the fundamental Haitian values of the struggle for freedom and the prevailing desire for independence are portrayed through the morals and personality of two child characters found in texts set in Saint-Domingue/Haiti. The first character is a young girl named Adrienne in Alphonse de Lamartine’s play Toussaint Louverture (1850) and the second is a young boy named Alexis in Marie-Célie Agnant’s novel Alexis d’Haiti (1999). Through these two characters, Lamartine and Agnant depict Haiti’s struggle to achieve freedom and to retain its unique cultural identity that has allowed this nation once called the “pearl …

Nature In A Box: Ecocriticism, Goethe’S Ironic Werther, And Unbalanced Nature, Heather I. Sullivan
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Ecocriticism emphasizes how our bodily and ecological boundaries are just as porous, inter-penetrable, and open as are our cultural and linguistic realms. As individual bodies and communities, we are fully immersed in our material environment and participating in constant exchanges of matter and energy. In this essay, I nevertheless advocate for a cautious approach to the ecocritical question of contested boundaries. After all, some boundaries and membranes are necessary to maintain living organisms. Regarding Timothy Morton’s assertion that we are “radically open,” I note the need for stable and healthy membranes to sustain life, such as our porous yet enclosed …

Affinity Studies And Open Systems: A Non-Equilibrium, Ecocritical Reading Of Goethe's Faust, Heather I. Sullivan
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Ecocriticism’s contributions to the current rejection of dualistic thinking are noteworthy, particularly when this interdisciplinary field concentrates on hybridity and “relations” that preexist essences. In this mode, ecocriticism participates in a broader development of “affnity studies” that encompass the many efforts across the disciplines toward reconfiguring our “intraactions” with the world in terms that avoid dichotomies and Newtonian linearity and that utilize instead nonlinear, nondualistic forms of “hybridity.” Hybrids, in Steve Hinchliffe’s words, are “more or less durable bodies made up of similarly hybrid and impermanent relations.

Review Of Germán Labrador Méndez, Letras Arrebatadas: Poesía Y Química En La Transición Española, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers
Arguably the most celebrated woman poet of Spain's Generation of 1927, Champourcin went into exile in Mexico at the conclusion of the civil war (1936-1939) with her husband, poet Juan Jose Domenchina. She lived there until her 1972 return to Spain. Champourcin's poetry evolves from the emphasis on emotions and formal experimentation to mysticism and the remembrance of her past. Her first book, En silencio (1926; In Silence), contains poems clearly influenced by romanticism and modernism. Subsequent poetry collections, such as La voz en el viento (1931; The Voice in the Wind), follow avant-garde tendencies and present a conceptual, pure …
