Una Polémica En La Habana: La Poesía Erótica De Mercedes Matamoros, Jorge L. Camacho Jan 2018

Una Polémica En La Habana: La Poesía Erótica De Mercedes Matamoros, Jorge L. Camacho

The Coastal Review

Mercedes Matamoros was considered one of Cuba’s leading poets in late nineteenth century. She was also an outstanding representative of the modernist movement. However, very little have been written about her, the reason being the uneasiness some of her poems caused among her male readers. In this article I would like to explore the polemic that followed the publication of “El último amor de Safo” in Cuba’s journal El Fígaro, and the anonymous reviews that appeared in the Diario de la Marina. I would like to highlight how these poems were read at the time for their transgressive …

Sins, Sex, And Secrets: The Legacy Of Confession From The Decameron To The Heptaméron, Nora Martin Peterson Jan 2018

Sins, Sex, And Secrets: The Legacy Of Confession From The Decameron To The Heptaméron, Nora Martin Peterson

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

A quick digital search for the term ‘confession’ in Boccaccio’s Decameron yields 75 results (Decameron Web). Confession in Boccacio’s text is conspicuously present and, I argue, not coincidental: it highlights the increased attention to the sacrament after the Fourth Lateran Council made annual confession mandatory in 1215. Decameron 1.1 depicts a false confession performed by a wicked man on his deathbed. His confessor follows the protocol of confession manuals, which began to appear in increasing number following 1215, but his interpretive skills do not extend beyond the questions he is bound by protocol to ask. In Boccaccio’s world, …

A Review Of Conceding Composition: A Crooked History Of Composition's Institutional Fortunes, Andrew Hollinger Jan 2018

A Review Of Conceding Composition: A Crooked History Of Composition's Institutional Fortunes, Andrew Hollinger

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Compositionists (a community in which I include myself) often work with a chip on our shoulders. Perhaps we find the chip during grad school or when we are asked to teach an overload or when a literature professor’s summer course does not make and they demand a section of first year writing instead or because so many of us remain contingent faculty. Whenever and however the chip appeared, many of us have felt or discussed its presence: we, and our courses, are the misunderstood and much maligned. In fact, this is “the field’s conventional historical narrative, [that] composition is marginalized …

Quantitative Fine-Grained Human Evaluation Of Machine Translation Systems: A Case Study On English To Croatian, Filip Klubicka, Antonio Toral, Victor Manuel Sanchez-Cartagena Jan 2018

Quantitative Fine-Grained Human Evaluation Of Machine Translation Systems: A Case Study On English To Croatian, Filip Klubicka, Antonio Toral, Victor Manuel Sanchez-Cartagena

Articles

This paper presents a quantitative fine-grained manual evaluation approach to comparing the performance of different machine translation (MT) systems. We build upon the well-established Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) error taxonomy and implement a novel method that assesses whether the differences in performance for MQM error types between different MT systems are statistically significant. We conduct a case study for English-to- Croatian, a language direction that involves translating into a morphologically rich language, for which we compare three MT systems belonging to different paradigms: pure phrase-based, factored phrase-based and neural. First, we design an MQM-compliant error taxonomy tailored to the relevant …

Perceptions Of University Students Toward Bilingualism In Fribourg, Barcelona, And Oxford, Madison Densmore Jan 2018

Perceptions Of University Students Toward Bilingualism In Fribourg, Barcelona, And Oxford, Madison Densmore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This master's thesis explores university students’ perceptions toward bilingualism and foreign language teaching in two bilingual, European communities—Fribourg, Switzerland, and Barcelona, Spain—and at the University of Mississippi in monolingual-dominant Oxford, Mississippi. This research was conducted over a period of about nine months and includes both qualitative and quantitative data: twenty-four interviews as well as three online questionnaires which were made available in the following five languages: French, German, Catalan, Castilian Spanish, and English. During the interviews and on the Qualtrics questionnaires, students were asked to share their perceptions about language, their communities, and foreign language teaching. For clarity purposes, although …

Español (Y Castellano), José Del Valle, Vitor Meirinho Jan 2018

Español (Y Castellano), José Del Valle, Vitor Meirinho

Publications and Research

The Inevitability Of Decay: Disability In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man And The Sea, Dominic Robin Jan 2018

The Inevitability Of Decay: Disability In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man And The Sea, Dominic Robin

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To many, Ernest Hemingway embodies a certain image of "masculinity," one centered around ability and physical performance. Such a narrative ignores the truly complicated and dynamic shape his understanding of the body took. Through an analysis of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, I examine the form this ideology took in his later life, focusing particularly on Hemingway's evolved understanding of the body. Through this research, a more nuanced picture of Hemingway emerges, one that recognizes the complicated and dynamic nature his view of the "able" body took.

Anthony Bukoski - An Outpost Of Polishness, John A. Merchant Jan 2018

Anthony Bukoski - An Outpost Of Polishness, John A. Merchant

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Isolated both geographically and psychologically, the Polish American writer Anthony Bukoski in his five collections of stories, Twelve Below Zero (1986, 2008), Children of Strangers (1993), Polonaise (1999), Time Between Trains (2003), and North of the Port (2008), as well as a collection of reissued stories Head of the Lakes (2018), assumes a variety of interrelated roles - chronicler, cultural archeologist, coastal guardsman, and spokesman - for the dwindling Polish community in his hometown of Superior , Wisconsin. Bukoski's stories capture the distinct relationship between people and place in Superior, situated as it is the periphery of American life in …

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair Jan 2018

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair

Honors Program Theses

When one seeks to learn another language, they have the opportunity to not only acquire a new form of communication but also invest and participate in a rich culture. Unfortunately, in many of today’s world language classrooms, learning about target cultures, or the cultures of the peoples who speak the language to be acquired, is treated as being of lesser importance than acquiring new structures and vocabulary. What is more, it is especially rare that students are invited to bring their own cultures and identities into the classroom conversation. In today’s climate, it is vital that students have a safe …

A Narrative Study: Utilizing Personal Strengths To Manage Foreign Language Anxiety, Lauren Anderson Jan 2018

A Narrative Study: Utilizing Personal Strengths To Manage Foreign Language Anxiety, Lauren Anderson

Honors Program Theses

Foreign language anxiety develops when a student feels under pressure or uncomfortable in a foreign language-learning situation often because they are cognizant of their inability to project themselves in their target language as they do in their first. As a result, students may become nervous or overwhelmed and fear speaking in the target language. Many researchers and educators have recommended strategies to help students manage their foreign language anxiety. To continue expanding on these ideas, the purpose of this research is to investigate whether focusing on and using personal strengths will mitigate students’ foreign language anxiety and help improve their …

Advancing A Transnational, Transdisciplinary And Translingual Framework: A Professional Development Series For Teaching Assistants In Writing And Spanish Programs, Alyssa G. Cavazos, Marcela Hebbard, José Esteban Hernández, Crystal Rodriguez, Geoffrey Schwarz

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Considering the need for writing and language programs to develop translingual and transdisciplinary pedagogies for teacher development at the graduate level (Canagarajah, 2016; Williams & Rodrigue, 2016), the authors examine the design of a multilingual pedagogy professional development series for first-year Spanish and Writing teaching assistants (TAs). As designers of and participants in the series, the authors explore the benefits and challenges inherent in transdisciplinary and translingual conversations and discuss implications for teaching and research in language and writing instruction and teacher development. In order to advance transdisciplinary and translingual approaches as a new normal in composition studies (Tardy 2017; …

Javier Sicilia: Advocate Of Deliberative Democracy In The Americas, Lyon Rathbun Jan 2018

Javier Sicilia: Advocate Of Deliberative Democracy In The Americas, Lyon Rathbun

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

When Javier Sicilia’s son was killed by cartel assassins in 2011, he transformed into a civic activist, with a mass following sufficiently large for Time Magazine to recognize him in 2011 as one of its “Protestors of the Year.” His very success mobilizing public opinion against cartel violence overshadows his more fundamental role as an advocate for deliberative democracy in the Americas. Sicilia’s historical importance lies in his recognition that only civic dialogue within the transnational public sphere that includes Mexico and the United States can heal the social pathologies unleashed by globalization and by the war on drugs. His …

Linguistic Landscape And Language Ideology: A Multimodal Analysis Of Government Websites In Morocco., Yassine Rfissa Dec 2017

Linguistic Landscape And Language Ideology: A Multimodal Analysis Of Government Websites In Morocco., Yassine Rfissa

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Moroccan society has long been a multicultural society. It is characterized by linguistic complexity due to the variety of languages spoken in the region and the power relationship among languages used in politics, education, science, government...etc. The constitution names both Arabic and Tamazight languages as the co-official languages of the country, whereas French is still seen as a dominant language in the public sectors such as higher education, banking, commerce, science, industry, policy, and government affairs. In this paper, I examine the multifaceted use of language and the language choice in the virtual public sphere in Morocco and how this …

Grenzüberschreitungen Und Kulturvermittlung Im Werk Von Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress Dec 2017

Grenzüberschreitungen Und Kulturvermittlung Im Werk Von Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
