Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy. Employing the Somogyi-Nelson method, their glycemic activity was studied in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Stress reactions were minimized. The effect …

The tide of warfare that swept the Chinese mainland culminated in the birth of a new government. The People's Republic of China was formally proclaimed on October 1, 1949. The Common Programme, which was adopted by the People's Political Consultative Conference and which be- came the law of the new regime, was the first law enacted to cover the administration of justice. The law presently in force, relating to the same subject matter, is the Constitution of 19542 adopted by the National People's Congress on September 20, 1954.

The appraisal is based on the agricultural productions which are raised mainly for food consumption; however, such industrial crops as cotton, flax, and hemp are considered also. Ceremonial music in Japan is a type of music used to celebrate special occasions in special places, e.g., to honor the Emperor on his birthday, or for other special celebrations at a shrine.

In Japanese, the character for ceremonial music is written 雅楽 (pronounced Gagaku). The character 雅 (ga) means graceful, noble, or excellent. The character 楽 (gaku) means good or beautiful musical sounds. Appearing together, 雅楽 the two parts of this character mean ceremonial music, which is not performed among ordinary people.

This honors project explores the historical, theoretical, and practical relationship between the Anglo-American Imagist movement and the Japanese haiku. The author argues that while Imagism existed as a formal movement for less than a decade, its core principles regarding the image and objectivity significantly shaped modern poetry. 

The study begins by tracing the origins of Imagism to T. E. Hulme, who provided the foundational theory of "new classicism" characterized by dry, hard, and accurate description.
