This study explores the motivation for learning Chinese language at the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). The major objective is to find out the reasons that motivated learners to enrol into the optional Chinese language course. The data used in the study was gathered through questionnaires and structured interviews. The presentation of findings reflected four types of motivation: intrinsic, extrinsic, integrative, and lastly, instrumental motivation. Tsuji Zennosuke 辻善之助 (1877–1955), the dominant figure in Buddhist historical scholarship in Japan from the 1930s until the mid-1950s, is known to have employed a broad range of sources in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of his subject. This essay examines Tsuji’s conception of Buddhist history in relation to the emer- gence of both National Historical Studies (kokushigaku 国史学) and so-called State Shintō (kokka shintō 国家神道) and argues against the image of Tsuji as an “objec- tive historian” resistant to nationalist trends in historical scholarship. This study seeks to reimagine and reinvigorate modern theatre’s relationship with mask work through text-based historical research and practice-based artistic research. It focuses on three ancient mask traditions: pre- and early Hellenistic Greek theatre, Japanese Noh theatre, and Nigerian Egungun masquerades. Research on these mask traditions and recent masked productions informed the development and staging of a masked performance of Charles Mee’s Life is a Dream. The production featured sections for each of the ancient masking styles and a final section that explored masks in a contemporary theatrical style. In her article, “The Colonized Masculinity and Cultural Politics of Seediq Bale,” Chin-ju Lin discusses a Taiwanese blockbuster movie, a postcolonial historiography and a form of life-writing, which delineates the last Indigenous insurrection against Japanese colonialism. This article explores the cultural representations in Seediq Bale. Fighting back as a colonized man for pride and dignity is portrayed as means to restore their masculine identity. This study explores the shared challenges during the acculturation process of graduate student immigrants pursuing higher education in the United States. 13 graduate student immigrants at the University of San Francisco discuss their experiences of cultural adjustment into U.S. culture. Through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, this study seeks to understand the acculturation experiences of graduate student immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States. Suspended in a state of exception, Okinawa has never been an official colony of the Japanese empire or the United States, nor has it ever been treated as an equal part of Japan. As a result, Okinawans live amid one of the densest concentrations of U.S. military bases in the world. By bringing Foucauldian biopolitics into conversation with Japanese Marxian theory, Alegal uncovers Japan’s determination to protect its middle class from the racialized sexual contact around its mainland bases by displacing them onto Okinawa, while simultaneously upholding Okinawa as a symbol of the infringement of Japanese sovereignty.

China has experienced high speed of economic growth, trying to catch up with the developed countries. Monetary policy has played a more and more important role in China. This dissertation studies the impacts of China's monetary policy on China's housing market, stock market, and China's economic growth.

The first essay examines macroeconomic determinants of China's housing price by constructing a VAR model. Granger Causality tests, impulse response functions and variance decompositions are used to analyze the impacts of macroeconomic factors on the housing price. 諧聲假借是利用語音的相同或相近關係來造字和使用文字。諧聲偏旁的讀音必定與整字的讀音相同或相近，某字所假借表示的詞的語音必定與其本來的讀音相同或相近。音近有一定的原則：聲母方面，如同部位的塞音，同部位的鼻流音；韻母方面，如韻相同，開合相同。但不合一般原則的諧聲假借亦不乏其例，尤其是在以戰國竹簡爲代表的出土古文字資料中，諧聲假借的語音關係表現複雜，需要加以歸納和解釋。而傳統的“一聲之轉”説帶有極大的任意性，必須摒棄。

新見《壽「四每」尊》銘文所見「卜馬」字試釋, Pui Ling Tang

香港翰海秋季拍賣會公佈新見《壽「四每」尊》乙器，年代屬於西周早期至中期之間。銘文記有“睗（錫）「卜馬」馬卅匹”一語，當中，「卜馬」字从“卜”从“馬”，乃金文首見，拍賣圖録讀爲“駙”。本文結合傳世文獻所見“馼”、“駇”二字的討論，提出尊銘「卜馬」字當讀爲“駁”，“睗（錫）「卜馬」馬卅匹”意指賞賜雜色馬三十匹。此外，本文復通過先秦用馬制度中“毛馬而頒之”與“物馬而頒之”的記述，指出《壽「四每」尊》所記賜馬數量較多，或因雜色馬無法用於禮儀活動，故其用途可以理解爲軍旅出征或家居代步。

《上海博物館藏戰國楚竹書》第2册有《容成氏》一篇，存簡五十餘枚，内容涉及夏商周三代興亡及其前的古史傳説，所記頗能補傳世文獻之闕。從2002年刊布以來，已有多部專書及數百篇論文針對此篇竹書的簡序編聯、疑難字詞及思想内涵作深入的探討。近年孫飛燕、單育辰搜集相關論著，分别編有集釋，筆者在其整理的基礎上，重新校讀全篇竹書。除了廣引時賢意見，加以論斷、補充新説外，筆者對於簡文中的難解詞語，如“歭板正立”、“方爲三俈”、“民乃宜怨”等，亦提出自己的看法。

新出曾伯「雨桼」壺銘的“元屖”與舊著録銅器銘文中相關詞語考釋, Pei Shen

2017年1月16、17日，湖北省文物考古研究所發表湖北京山蘇家壟遺址出土的曾伯雨桼壺銘文照片，並對銘文大部分内容作了解釋。有學者很快就發表了研究文章。本文隨即對前述相關研究做了檢討，重新隸寫釋文，並作相關注釋，重點將其中“孔武元屖”與舊著録曾伯「雨桼」簠相應的“元武孔黹”進行對比，確定“孔黹”當讀爲“孔夷”。由此，文章又對其他銘文中難解的“黹”字及相關語詞進行了重新解釋。此外，文章還順便討論了樂器銘文中常見的“元鳴孔皇”的語法結構問題。

試論早期“中國”觀念的形成, Gang Xu

西周初年，“中國”的概念逐漸固定在洛陽，這是武王、周公的戰略設計。在周民族進入中國歷史之前，洛陽一直是個邊緣地帶，並不是政治與文化的中心。西周以前，華夏族的政治經濟中心是九州中的冀州地區。把洛陽作爲天下之中，除了地理的因素之外，更重要的是宗教、軍事、資源上的考慮。“中國”是一個宗教性的概念，是一種精神的象徵。

司馬遷與《過秦》篇, Kanli Chen

司馬遷編著《史記》，全文引述賈誼《過秦》篇，有含而未申之義。參考北大漢簡《趙正書》等出土文獻，可知《過秦》所述史事别有所據，與《史記》多有牴牾。司馬遷對這些牴牾之處未加删削，也不像對待一般作品那樣將《過秦》篇置入作者的列傳，而是收録在抒發己見的“太史公曰”中，有意假借賈誼的文字，寫出對武帝晚年政局的批評和重蹈亡秦覆轍的憂慮。這樣的表達方式，受到《詩》《書》《春秋》等古代經典的影響，切合當時的歷史情境，更與司馬遷本人的遭遇和心態緊密聯繫，體現了《史記》寫作中個人化的一面。

新出“宗人”諸器所反映的西周宗族關係, Wei Han

新見流散西周青銅器中，有一組與名爲“宗人”的貴族相關的銅器，包括宗人簋兩件、伯或父鼎（作器者實爲“宗人”）一件、叔安父簋一件、孝簋一件、叔友簋兩件。這組銅器年代在西周中期後段，銘文内容涉及西周世族的内部結構以及大、小宗之間的關係，十分重要。銘文記録“伯或父（伯氏）”、“凡姬”和“叔安父”先後賞賜“宗人”和“孝（叔友）”，或爲他們製作祭器。本文首先分析銅器銘文中記録的人物關係，指出“伯或父”爲該家族大宗宗子，“凡姬”爲其夫人，是出身“周公之胤”凡氏家族的女子。“叔安父”應爲“伯或父”之世子。“宗人”是“伯或父”的小宗侄輩，“孝（叔友）”則是“宗人”的親兄弟。由此可見，西周時期世族内部的大宗和小宗之間保持着嚴格的宗法關係，在政治、經濟和祭祀等諸方面，小宗都服從於大宗，並從大宗獲取資源支持。而且大宗宗子的夫人（宗婦）和世子（法定繼承人）都在族内享有一定的支配權。這些都深化了我們對西周家族形態和宗法制度的認識。

談談戰國文字中用爲“野”的“冶”字, Ping'an Zhao

戰國文字中有一個從“土”從“爪”的字，長期以來得不到正確的釋讀。本文比較系統地梳理了該字的研究歷史，分析了該字的相關用例，特别是新出簡帛資料，認爲應釋爲野。從來源上講，很可能是冶的假借改造字。

中國古墓爲何隨葬書籍, Hua Yang

中國古墓中出土大量書籍，是上古葬俗的反映。在喪葬禮制的初期，它們被埋入墓中，可能與墓主的身份、職業、興趣有直接關係，但後來相沿成俗，便變得關係不大了，大多是舉喪時臨時抄寫的文本。喪家可能並不在意入葬文本的性質和完整性，而只是在意是否隨葬了“書”，對葬書禮俗的重視反而超過了對文獻本身的重視。所以纔會出現重複文本、摘抄選抄、補綴書寫、空白簡等現象。不同時期人間社會流行的書籍，在“陰間”墓葬中都會得到反映。

戰國工官屬吏中的成童 : 再談三晉銘刻中所見“孺子”的身份, Yongbing Guo

本文結合《陝西金文集成》著録的春成孺子鼎和邵陰下官銅箍銘文，對戰國文字資料中與斠量器物有關的“孺子”的身份再次進行了探討，否定了過去對三晉銘刻中所見的部分“孺子”身份的判斷，認爲這些“孺子”是工官中負責諸如器物檢定斠量等輔助工作的成童，與戰國文字資料中的“敖童/敖史”、“馬童”身份接近，或可類比。文末附帶談了燕國的“郭大夫甗”，懷疑所謂“郭”字可能也應改釋“乳”，並對器物自名作了研究。

據出土文獻説“懸諸日月而不刊”及相關問題, Jian Chen

今日尚常用之成語“懸諸日月而不刊”，一般解釋作“和日月一同懸掛在天空，永不磨滅”之類。此語出自西漢末揚雄《答劉歆書》，可追溯到《管子·白心》“縣乎日月無已也”。“縣（懸）”如字解非其原意。從秦漢出土文獻的字形、用字習慣和有關辭例來看，“縣”原本應解作緜延之“緜（綿）”。“緜”字本自“縣”字分化而來，兩字在漢代曾長期共用某些字形而未徹底分化開；東漢碑刻中有“緜之日月，與金石存”（婁壽碑），“功綿日月，名勒管弦”（帝堯碑）等辭例，與“縣（緜）諸日月”可相印證。古書校勘中的“縣”“緜（綿）”糾葛問題，王念孫多已指出；今據本文的分析，還可進一步揭示出更多先秦古書和漢代簡帛中一些應讀爲“緜”的“縣”字，糾正舊説之誤。
