Continuing Education For Indonesian Language Teachers In Victoria, Australia, Lambert Kelabora

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The last ten years have witnessed a significant growth in the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia in Australia. Of the 98 Indonesian language teachers in 1975, 62 (63%) responded to the present study. Amongst them were eight native speakers of Bahasa Indonesian who are all teaching at private schools. This paper explores the needs for and the provision of in-service training amongst these teachers. Some suggested solutions to the problems in this field will be implicit in the analysis.

English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.

However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. The improper placement of subject, verb and object also serves as a cause of foreign tones. Thus the present translation has more factors of Formal-Equivalence translation than those of …

With the single exception of a survey of Chinese history in the Western United States written by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, there exists no other documented history of the Chinese experience in Utah.

This paper offers an overview of Pioneer Chinese life in Utah territory from the Chinese railroad laborers in Box Elder County to the Chinatown settlement in Silver Reef mining camp in Washington County. Old Chinese customs, individual Chinese personalities and communities are rediscovered through the use of census data, newspaper editorials, and oral interviews. Grammatical Ambiguity In Japanese And English, Joseph Clarc Chryst

As indicated in the title, the principal topic of this thesis is the concept of grammatical ambiguity. In this thesis, that concept and the concept of function switching rules are identified and defined. Examples of noun phrases from Japanese and English which exhibit grammatical ambiguity are analyzed. Examples of noun phrases in English which necessitate the formulation of function switching rules are provided and discussed. The study is conducted within a generative-transformational analytical framework. Non-generative studies germane to the topic are discussed. The bulk of the example sentences for Japanese come from non-generative sources.

This project was designed to generate information relative to a specific intercultural communication situation, especially directed toward diversity between cultural expectation and performance in the following areas: first, Chinese expectation of American Latter-day Saint missionaries' performance in Chinese contexts; and second, performance of the missionaries, as reflected by their knowledge of proper conduct in Chinese contexts at the end of their missions.

Using Q-card sorting procedures and t-test analysis, an analytically developed instrument consisting of seventy statements grouped in six behavior categories was applied in the specific areas. Twenty-nine of the seventy statements showed significant diversity. Four of the hypothesized …
