The characters "足" and "疋" have the same etymology and were occasionally used interchangeably. It was during the Warring States period that they began to be used separately. In Chapter "室家不足" of the Book of Songs, "室家" should be interpreted as "家庭," and "足" is equivalent to "疋," which is pronounced as "雅" and means "正." Therefore, "室家不足" refers to the illegitimacy of the family relationship.

This research is based on the framework of social constructivism, utilizing the principle of Human Universals as a methodology to compare the similarities and differences between the ideation and formation methods of Chinese characters and English alphabets. Through comparative analysis of the ideation of English letters (pictogramme) and the origin of Chinese characters, known as the "Six Categories Theory," we discover their alignment in terms of social, traditional, and cultural aspects. This article discusses Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) implemented in the Chinese classroom. TBLT involves a three-phase pedagogical sequence, including pre-task, on-task, and post-task. Different task-based learning activities are designed to promote learners’ language acquisition through the performance of tasks. Learners are engaged in interactive and collaborative communication to accomplish meaningful and relevant real life tasks. This article explores the application of one TBLT unit in Chinese for learners’ language development in terms of both fluency and accuracy.

This essay documents 3D-printed sculptures displayed at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Document Academy. The arts have long been tools used to prop up political visions, and Japan’s traditional crafts are no exception to this trend. Japanese ceramics in particular have enjoyed, or perhaps endured, era after era of patronage by successive governments and movements over their more than a millennium of history. This lesson uses lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities to encourage students to empathize with the Tibetan people and to think critically about responses to the Chinese Communist Party’s oppressive policies. The lesson begins with an overview of Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan history since the Chinese invasion, and religious policy in China. Next, students actively interpret instances of self-immolation and analyze non-violent strategies for resolving conflict, connecting these subjects to their learning about Tibetan Buddhism and their prior knowledge of non-violent resistance. The lesson concludes with a reflection in which students connect the lesson’s topics to circumstances in their own lives.

After the Meiji Restoration (1868 - ), there were three major Westernization periods in Japanese clothing history. The first was the period when Japan re-opened its ports to the West, the second was when the Great Kanto Earthquake hit eastern Japan (1912). During the first and the second periods, Western style clothing was added to the existing upper- to mid-class kimono culture. The third period was post-World War II period when the Japanese lost most of their clothing during the war as they were burnt in bombings, bartered for foods, or forced to alter the shape.

Industrial silk factories in Hangzhou and Shanghai represent active efforts to modernize and weave together the turbulent Republic of China (1912–1949). The Guomindang government, under Chiang Kai-Shek (1887–1975), acculturated modernity, as demonstrated by the silk industry, to unite China and secure the nation from trans-colonial threats, including economic security. Countless silk reelers, weavers, and businessmen in China, altered traditional sericulture with imported industry and ideologies in order to secure national autonomy. 《404》是一條每個人都熟悉的網絡代碼，象徵著你連結網站發生的錯誤。社會就如同一個龐大的網絡，連結著每個人的生活，人與人之間亦會互相影響，但在這巨大而複雜的社會中，總會有被忽略的一角，令人人都有機會陷入一個個微不可察的錯誤，與網絡失聯，和正常健康的社會割裂。社會中的小人物，又如何在錯誤的網站上尋找出路，回到正軌？

《404》中的四篇微型小說，記錄了現今社會中普遍的各種現象，以關愛座、十號風球、容貌焦慮和虛擬網絡為主題，並從多個城市中生活的小人物的角度出發，通過誇大和超現實的方式去書寫和發掘日常生活發生的各種細微、不起眼、被忽略的事件，但這一群正正是在社會不正常氛圍下的受害者。

《左傳》與《史記》敘事比較研究——以楚莊王定霸為例, Yan Yip Chow

楚莊王是春秋時期楚國最有成就的君主之一，名列春秋五霸。他的定霸之路雖未如晉文公之坎坷，但楚國在春秋初期以「蠻夷」自稱，後能進入中原成為大國，再到後來位列戰國七雄之一，離不開楚莊王的影響。楚國史一直受到學者的關注和研究。然而，楚國史書《檮杌》亡佚已久，現存《楚史檮杌》記載楚莊王的逸聞軼事，該書版本之間差異較大，不算據實完整地記錄楚莊王事跡。有關楚史專著雖提及楚莊王稱霸，但對莊王稱霸的細枝末節並沒有展開講述，內容多為整合史料而已。

本文以楚莊王為主題，探討楚莊王的定霸之路中的重要事件。時間範圍主要涵蓋楚莊王即位至其定霸，約為周頃王六年（公元前613年）至周定王十六年（公元前591年）。研究方法包括以《左傳》敘事與《史記》文本對讀，並輔以其他文獻和史料考究。通過梳理楚莊王的生平事跡，分析二書之間的敘事異同，並以敘事角度平議復陳、圍鄭、平宋三件重要事件的記敘，同時兼及《公羊傳》的敘事，以更全面地理解楚莊王的稱霸之道。

香港在歷史上曾經歷了多次大規模移民潮，這反映了社會和政治環境的變遷，以及人們對未來的憂慮和不安，包括：1945年香港重光後、1967年六七暴動後、1997年香港主權移交前等。近些年來，尤其是2019年「反修例運動」和2020年《港區國安法》實施後，促使許多香港人對未來的預期、對家庭的考量以及對個人身份和歸屬感重新思考，推動了新一輪的移民潮，又以台灣和英國為港人主要的移民地。

Nourishing Connections: Chinese Immigrant Identity In Tokyo Through Commensality And Hospitality, Sarai Brown

This paper explores how Chinese immigrants in Tokyo, Japan preserve their cultural identity through practices of commensality and hospitality in stark contrast to Japanese culture. In Chinese culture, hospitality – mainly acts of food sharing – is how kinship relations are built and maintained, eventually growing into an important hierarchy network that ultimately builds a fully realized identity created out of communal belonging. Japanese culture in this sense is not as hospitable, deeming food-sharing as an extremely private and high-risk affair that is considered low-risk in Chinese contexts.

My research project deals with intercultural communication issues in religious conversations among American English speakers and Japanese speakers. Much research has been done to examine how miscommunications occur across cultures, and that understanding cultural contexts can help us be more successful in linguistic endeavors. This paper specifically examines how the different sociocultural meanings attached to individual lexical items associated with religious topics (e.g., ‘God’ and ‘prayer’) differ between English and Japanese. This paper intends to analyse blame for the North Korean famine through Amartya Sen’s entitlement theory, which suggests that the North Korean state was largely to blame. The collapse of the public distribution system (PDS), as well as the North Korean government’s misallocation of aid, were most significant in obstructing North Koreans’ ability to access food, and can be interpreted as severe entitlement ‘failures’ that were directly facilitated by the state.

Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese.
