When I first began learning Chinese about three years ago, I was puzzled by how fatalistic Chinese people seemed to me. This struck me strongly during my first visit to China on BYU Study Abroad in Fall 2006, and has remained an interest of mine ever since. After some preliminary reading, I decided that the best way to understand what fate means to the Chinese is to study what it meant in ancient times. Thus, I started studying what “fate” means in the Confucian Analects, which is how this project was born.

China’s Cultural Revolution is a defining event in modern Chinese history and a topic of lasting interest to foreign observers. While some speculate the shadow of Mao is fading in the light of capitalistic reforms in China, the impact of those decades of political upheaval persists in shaping China’s government, economy and society today. Among the most visible and iconic manifestations of that era are propaganda posters ablaze with the deified Mao and political slogans which suffused every aspect of daily life for many Chinese in the 1960s and 1970s.

Though some argue the shadow of Mao may be fading in the light of capitalistic reforms, media and the arts in contemporary China are often mobilized to achieve political goals. Today it can be argued that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is pursuing an agenda of thought work and propaganda more aggressively, more comprehensively and on a larger scale than any other world power, but instead of employing the heavyhanded policies of the past, the CCP has succeeded in encouraging selfcensorship on a large scale by controlling the means of artistic production.

As a fellow in the BYU Chinese Flagship Program, I chose Chinese environmental and sustainable development policy as my research focus. The Uighur Turks are a minority group several million strong now living primarily in the desert oasis towns of western China. Although the first writings on the banks of the Dead Sea, known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, were first discovered in 1947, not all were made accessible to more than a handful of scholars; indeed, not even the subject matter of the writings were made known until 1992. This guarding of the material retarded (and preserved) the study of the contents of the Dead Sea Scrolls, so that today traces of the ancient world are still percolating through the hands of scholars to the general public.

Based in a close reading of Zhu Guangqian's pre-1949 works on aesthetics, the paper delineates the relationship between Zhu's early aesthetics and Kant and points out the fundamental influence of Kantian aesthetics on the formation of Zhu's aesthetic theory. The paper claims that Croce's apparent influence shown as the psychological aspects in Zhu'a pre-1949 aesthetics should be understood as selective acceptance after Zhu's acceptance of Kantian aesthetics. Kant's main influence upon Zhu's aesthetics is Zhu's acceptance of the uninterested non-utilitarian formalism and the sublime theory, although Zhu had held some reservation about Kant's aesthetics, especially after 1930s when he began …

In the epilogue of "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction", Walter Benjamin developed a critical model of "aestheticization of politics" in which Italian Futurism is criticized as fascism, which has resulted in heated debates on the relationship between the avant-garde and fascism. This paper attempts to revisit Benjamin's critical model of "aestheticization of politics" by describing and analyzing the context of modernity in which the model is formed in hope of disclosing Benjamin's insights into modernity. Self-annotation is an important and a popular phenomenon in the history of the Tang-Dynasty poetry, and it creates a complex relationship with the inner lyrical implications of poetry. Different modes of self-annotations in different developmental phases result in different relationships between self-annotations and poetic sentiments. The relation evolves from estrangement during early Tang and Dali Reign, to integration in Middle Tang and to the final recession in the Late Tang. This evolution shows that self-annotations follow a trajectory around lyrical implication of the poetry with a centrifugal or centripetal movement. "Qi" (vital force) and "Vein" are very important for traditional Chinese medicine and geomancy, and they are significant categories in ancient Chinese literary theory as well. The relationship between "Qi" and "Vein" relates to the meaning of the compound phrase "Qimai." When the two-character phrase is of subordinate structure, it refers to a channel by which "Qi" flows in a literary text.
