This is the first issue of Zephyr, the University of New England's journal of creative expression. Since 2000, Zephyr has published original drawings, paintings, photography, prose, and verse created by current and former members of the University community. Zephyr's Editorial Board is made up exclusively of matriculating students.

This article provides a general discussion of the evolution of the World Wide Web and its rapid takeover within many crucial sectors of the modern world such as energy, education, and the military. Dietrich details the function of data and its role as “the heart of everything” that defines the realities of society’s current computer environments. The author cements this idea by using, British mathematician Alan Turing’s insights regarding the computer’s superior symbol universal processing capabilities in comparison to the original symbol processor at our disposal, the human brain.

Cracking The Maze Online Exhibit: Game Plug-Ins And Patches As Hacker Art, Anne-Marie Schleiner

The article discusses game patches that are produced by programmers or game companies that can be used as a marketing tool. Unlike ordinary software patches, game patches don't correct code behind the scenes, it is deeply embedded in the host system and commercial computer games. Sonya Roberts' patch, for example, skims the surface of the game, while Jason Huddy's patch for "Los Disneys" uses the game engine without the content, creating a new game of the hacker's own devising.
