Based on cognitive approaches to second language learning, the thesis emphasizes the correspondence between MSA and ECA, and argues for simultaneous teaching of the two varieties from basic levels onward. Development in CALL technology can effectively implement cognitive principles and realize the goals of the integrated approach in the field of TAFL. The thesis describes a software program designed for teaching beginners MSA and ECA simultaneously using idioms as a unifying conceptual element.

This is one of the very few attempts at creating CALL programs for Arabic learning, a medium that is in dire need of development if Arabic language teaching is to keep up with future trends in second language learning as a whole. Collocation is the arbitrary combination of words based on syntactic and semantic relations. Although collocational knowledge improves learners' expressiveness and fluency, collocation has long been neglected in learning Arabic, and Arabic dictionaries provide insufficient information about collocations.

collocation combining linguistic, pedagogical, lexicographical and cognitive viewpoints. This thesis investigated the pronunciation problems of syllable initial consonant clusters in word-initial positions for adult Egyptian Students. Several previous studies explored the incorrect strategies that adults used in order to avoid the difficulty of initial consonant cluster pronunciation.
