The Importance Of Our Performing Arts, Gina Parker, Russell Brakefield Feb 2023

The Importance Of Our Performing Arts, Gina Parker, Russell Brakefield

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This essay is titled "The Importance of Our Performing Arts" and it was written in February 2022. I was taking an argumentative writing class at the time where we have free range to choose a topic to write about, so naturally, I choose something I am passionate about, the impact of youth theatre on our adolescents. The prompt was to identify a driving question or phenomenon related to the arts to investigate and develop a complex thesis you could argue in the paper through the use of rhetorical strategies, I decided on the discussion between funding in STEM (science, technology, …

Gathered Together: The Impact Of In-Person Experiences In A Virtual Age, Consuela Knox

DMin Project Theses

This February 2024 Doctor of Ministry project thesis at Lipscomb University analyzes how following the height of a global health pandemic which required that individuals quarantine, in-person attendance at West Harpeth Church worship services has not reached the pre-pandemic level. The goal of this project was to enhance West Harpeth members’ theological understanding of the importance of in-person corporate gatherings as compared to virtual gatherings. The key research question was: Can awareness of the value of in-person corporate gatherings at West Harpeth, in comparison to virtual gatherings, be raised among members by them engaging in theological reflection? Related questions were: …

Marketing, Development, And The Question Of Meaning, Dominique Bouchet Feb 2023

Marketing, Development, And The Question Of Meaning, Dominique Bouchet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Originally developed as a sales technique, marketing ended up playing an economic and political role globally. With the advent of globalization and sustainability issues, the importance given to the techniques of marketing in both analyses and in communication limits the possibility of mutual understanding and of social creativity. A profound understanding of what is at stake for society and culture is not what matters when the focus is on the ways to maintain the superficial link to the instrument of power.

The market plays a central role within the fields of marketing, economics and politics. Yet, questions of what the …

Loving Blackness: A Sense Experience, Ricardo J. Millhouse Feb 2023

Loving Blackness: A Sense Experience, Ricardo J. Millhouse

Feminist Pedagogy

The late bell hooks framed feminist pedagogies as a set of practices and systems that provide a description of feminism, a feminist learning environment, and ways to cultivate a community that is ready for feminist instruction. Using intersectionality, hooks (1992) discussed “loving blackness” as a representational and destabilizing practice to de-center whiteness. hooks (1992, 20) writes, “loving blackness as a political resistance transforms our ways of looking and being, and thus creates conditions necessary for us to move against the forces of domination and death and reclaim black life.” I propose a black feminist praxis teaching tool, “a sense experience,” …

Black Feminist Pedagogy In White Southern Spaces, Frances B. Henderson Feb 2023

Black Feminist Pedagogy In White Southern Spaces, Frances B. Henderson

Feminist Pedagogy

In Teaching to Transgress, bell hooks situates the classroom as “the most radical space of opportunity in academia” (hooks 1994,), as it is within this space that we might challenge and transcend ways of knowing centered in patriarchy, sexism and racism. But what happens when the classroom is located in spaces loyal to the historical frameworks that buttress white supremacist heteropatriarchy? This article examines my twelve years of experience in teaching undergraduate courses in political science at a small liberal arts college in the mid-South. At its center are critical reflections on attempts to formulate and employ a black feminist …

How I Learned To Love Teaching: Bell Hooks And The Possibilities Of The Feminist Classroom, Patti Duncan Feb 2023

How I Learned To Love Teaching: Bell Hooks And The Possibilities Of The Feminist Classroom, Patti Duncan

Feminist Pedagogy

In this critical commentary, I describe the influence bell hooks has had on my pedagogy since first reading her book, Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, when I was a graduate student in Women’s and Gender Studies in the 1990s. The profound influence hooks’ work had on me, as a first generation, woman of color scholar from a working-class background, cannot be overstated. Her words helped me name and begin to critique and resist the isolation, alienation, and oppressive systems that had, up to that point, shaped my experience and the experience of many women of color …

Playing With Privilege: A Creative Way For Students To Unpack Privilege, Ashley D. Garcia Feb 2023

Playing With Privilege: A Creative Way For Students To Unpack Privilege, Ashley D. Garcia

Feminist Pedagogy

Although privilege is a foundational concept in many courses, students often have only a vague notion of it, which hinders discussion and analysis. This activity/assignment, grounded in bell hooks' engaged pedagogy, tasks students with visually representing and explaining a concrete instance of privilege to their peers. Through creating comic strips, students must interrogate their assumptions of privilege and begin to encounter its intersectional structure. Creating comic strips that depict privilege helps students grasp the concept and apply it in their self-reflection. Moreover, this establishes a foundation from which students can interrogate the positions of privilege that structure their social realities.

Resisting Burnout: Bell Hooks’ Pedagogy Of Hope And Teaching Antiracist Feminism Online At The University Of Wyoming During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha L. Vandermeade

Feminist Pedagogy

After earning a PhD in Women’s Studies from an urban, multicultural, R1 university in 2020, I accepted a teaching position at the University of Wyoming, where I was hired primarily to teach feminist and critical race-focused courses. When an in-person position suddenly moved entirely online, I found myself facing not only the culture shock of teaching at a rural, primarily White institution whose state legislature and general populace are largely hostile to antiracist feminism, but also the myriad daily challenges of teaching online during a global pandemic. I had felt personally prepared--as a White lesbian raised in a rural environment, …

Luchas Contra La Matriz Colonial Del Poder: La Liminalidad Del Inmigrante En Axolotl De Julio Cortázar Y Everything, Everywhere All At Once De Daniel Kwan Y Daniel Scheinert., Daniela Hernandez

World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones

Throughout this essay, immigrant liminality and its connection to Anibal Quijano’s colonial matrix of power is highlighted. Literature and film, such as "Axolotl" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once," illustrate the impact of colonialism on immigrant liminality. Decolonization, anti-colonial thought and culture, can empower marginalized communities by recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism. Such representations acknowledge the state of limbo immigrants face, which is disconnected from the mainstream representation of the immigrant experience and the American Dream. By exploring liminality, these representations can help dismantle the colonial matrix of power that shapes how immigrants are perceived in the Western world.

Hochberg, Marc, Sophia Maier Garcia Feb 2023

Hochberg, Marc, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Marc Hochberg was born 1949. He grew up with parents, both the children of immigrants, in a six story apartment building on Holland Avenue, off the south side of Pelham Parkway. The area is remembered as 90% Jewish, with one Italian friend from elementary school. He attended Castle Hill Junior High School in Parkchester, which still had few non-white students at the time, and the Bronx High School of Science. When he was in high school his parents moved to Grand Concourse and 165th Street. Bronx Science is remembered as a top education, and he would go to Franklin and …
