Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa
Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This paper conducts a comparative study about four translations of sūrat alInshiqāq: Yousef Ali, Muhammad Hilali-Muhsin Khan, Pickthall and Mohammad Abdel Haleem. Multiple opinions of exposition have been provided to explore how, in certain ayas, the translators fail to find an appropriate equivalent. The translations' problems are categorized into lexical, stylistic and syntactic problems, whereas these categories also have sub-categories in order to clarify the gaps that might be encountered while translating the Qur'anic text. The problems are investigated through the theories of free and bound translation. Since religious texts, especially the sacred ones, are contextbased, they have different meanings …

Subject-Verb Agreement In Existential Constructions In Contemporary American English: A Corpus-Based Study, Ekab Al-Shawashreh, Mohammad Al-Omari
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study investigates the variable subject-verb agreement in existential constructions in the Corpus of Contemporary American-English (COCA). While variable subject-verb agreement in existential constructions has been extensively studied in many varieties of English, we study this variation in a particular corpus to find out the correlation between the distribution of the standard and non-standard subject-verb agreement variants in American-English and a number of linguistic factors (tense, contraction, kind of plural and adjacency of subject and verb). To achieve this goal, a total of 375 tokens of standard and non-standard agreement in existential constructions are extracted from the corpus and coded …
Motherland Is Out Of Place A Study Of Said’S Autobiography, Ahlam Masad
Motherland Is Out Of Place A Study Of Said’S Autobiography, Ahlam Masad
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Based on analyzing the images and conceptions perceived in Edward Said's Out of Place, this paper attempts to explore the reasons why Said does not attach himself to a specific place of identity or to a nostalgic restored place described as the lost place. These reasons are a unique layout Said portrayed to deal with the place. They also show an intense paradox of the image represented in various cultural classical literature tackling the relationship between man in exile, place, and motherland. Thus, Said presented a new image of his relationship with place in line with the different spatial frameworks …
Between Arabic And Hebrew: Language Choices For Iraqijewish Writers After Their Immigration To Israel, Mahmoud Amarat, Mohammad Nusairat
Between Arabic And Hebrew: Language Choices For Iraqijewish Writers After Their Immigration To Israel, Mahmoud Amarat, Mohammad Nusairat
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Since its inception, the Israeli society has been a strange and heterogenous mixture of immigrants from different countries. The Iraqi-Jewish stratum is among the main social strata of the society. It has included a considerable number of fiction writers and poets facing serious issues after their immigration to Israel. Among these issues are attempts to marginalize and wipe out Arabic from Jewish literature. Hence, these attempts force many writers to abandon writing in Arabic and replacing it with Hebrew. It is noticeable, however, that even after the transfer of those writers and poets to write in Hebrew, the spirit of …

The critical study views the center and the margin dialectic as an important matter to understand the literary text, taking into consideration the suitability of this duality to study most of literary texts. The research attempts to introspect the Sa’alik poetry in the pre-Islamic era through the view of cultural semiotics, with the help of the dual center and the margin as a part of such semiotics. The research is based on two aspects: the first investigates the appearance of the term “Center and Margin” and its indication in the literary and critical domains, and the existing dialectic in the terminological …

The Role Of The "Speaker" In The Stages Of "The "Emergence And Growth Of Arabic Grammar (A Study In The Light Of Some Modern Perspectives), Fares Alsoud, Faisal Safa
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims at illustrating the role of the "speaker" in the Arabic Grammatical Heritage in its two stages: "emergence" and "development". This is due to the intensive care given by "discourse studies" to both the "speaker" and the "addressee" in the verbal situation. That given intensive care was strong enough to encourage a lot of those who are interested in ancient Arabic linguistics to examine the ancient grammatical studies. This study was concerned with highlighting the concepts which governed the way of analysis followed in those studies. The results were impressive regarding the "speaker", and also were refuting one …

Creativity, Craftsmanship, And Connection: Large-Format Sculpture Design, Jacqueline L. Puga, Gordon Hoople
Creativity, Craftsmanship, And Connection: Large-Format Sculpture Design, Jacqueline L. Puga, Gordon Hoople
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Artistry is a concept that is not usually explored in engineering yet is an invaluable skill that touches everything from product design to systems thinking. This past summer I developed conceptual designs for a large format sculpture that required connecting engineering knowledge with artistic vision. The initial phase required constant inspiration and creativity. The first step was to look at previous sculptures showcased throughout the world, such as at venues like “Burning Man,” to understand the possibilities or limitations of the space provided. Sketching varied and numerous ideas was essential in our design process. Next, we took our favorite ideas …

Integrating Theatre And Biology: How Embodied Performance Can Enhance Empathy Among College Science Students, Annika C. Speer, Begona Echeverria
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
In these field notes, we examine the integration of the arts into a 20-person honors biology seminar at UC Riverside “Beyond Science: Being Humane Amid Human Rights Crises.” We held a four-hour workshop to examine the ways in which performance and theatrical storytelling can enhance science learning. The workshop provided a unique avenue for exploring how human activities result in downward consequences including refugee displacement, one of the course objectives. In addition to the workshop, we conducted surveys and a focus group with the students to better understand their experience incorporating the arts into their science class. A key concept …

Exhibiting Steam: Curating Community Conversations Through Library Collections, Stefanie Hilles, Ginny Boehme, Rachel Makarowski
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
This article discusses the successful collaboration of an art librarian, a science librarian, and a special collections librarian in their efforts to engage the community in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) conversations through the curation of a STEAM-based exhibition of artist books. The exhibition was an opportunity to showcase STEAM’s interdisciplinarity through library collections that, until this point, had remained unexplored. The goal was to demonstrate how scientific principles have inspired both contemporary artists and those throughout history, dispelling the myth that artists are not influenced by science. The Libraries’ Special Collections proved an excellent resource to investigate …

Our (S)TEAM made of professors in three academic departments underscores interdisciplinary and diversity connections through an interdisciplinary team-taught course, units on environmental justice related to mining, teaching of literary texts, and STEAM projects. We also involved faculty, alumni, and our campus and city community through STEAM exhibits.
Life’S A Pattern, Adam Manning
Life’S A Pattern, Adam Manning
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Life's a Pattern - questions one's capacity to infer patterned stimulus. Stimulus that's representative of one's lifetime, but into a twelve-minute visual/sonic experience. This experience reminds us that one's life experiences are full of varying patterns, and suggests, if one can understand these patterns as a detached observer (free of time), they'll most likely produce rhythmic joy for others. To extenuate this notion - this experience concludes with world-renowned drummer Keith Carlock, whose credits include: Sting, Toto, John Mayor & Steely Dan – a master producer of patterned stimulus.

Light Leaf: Observations Of Leaves In Light, Paul Kelley
Light Leaf: Observations Of Leaves In Light, Paul Kelley
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
For me, spending time in isolation yielded some interesting findings, as I began to closely observe the various leaves that engulf my backyard. Every new day brought with it a new detail, a subtlety with every shift in light, revealing an endless array of abstractions, textures and colors. I was seeing the hidden life of leaves dancing in the sunlight. Naturally, I began documenting my observations.
