From 2011 to 2014 fossil fuel corporations trucked tar sands processing machinery along rural Idaho highways. The machinery was bound for the world's largest deposits of tar or oil sands, a heavy crude oil substance called bitumen, located in the western Canadian province of Alberta. These loads of machinery, what became known as megaloads, encountered much resistance. Throughout Idaho and the surrounding region, a network organized opposition. Neighbors, grassroots organizations, nonprofits, and the Nez Perce and other tribes all collaborated. They held information sessions, protested, waged legal battles, monitored the loads, and blockaded highways. What oil companies hoped would be …

Schmidt-Hidding’s (b. 1903, d. 1967) lexical field study on the area of Humor und Witz [humour and wit/jokes] (1963b) receives attention in humour research to this day, especially in German-speaking countries. His diamond-shaped illustration of the two dimensions of the field of humour, not least in its aim to distinguish “earthy” German from “courteous” English humour, has become well-known. In view of this continued interest in the final write-up of Schmidt-Hidding’s work on humour (1963a, 1963b), in which he consistently ignores his earlier related publications under the name of Schmidt, this paper aims to discourage researchers from basing their work …

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people face the burden of additional stressors as a result of their experiences of stigma and discrimination regarding their sexual minority status. Parental rejection of LGB people in the context of heterosexism serves as a powerful minority stressor associated with poorer mental health (e.g., Bouris et al., 2010; Ryan, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2009). Few contemporary theories exist to describe the experience of parental rejection. In addition, the extant empirical research has focused primarily on youth experiences among White and urban LGB samples, signaling the need for research across the lifespan investigating more diverse samples. …

In her article "Reconsiderations on the Crises of Comparative Literature Study" Jie Lu discusses the three crises in comparative literature and reaches the conclusion that the discipline's significant changes are due primarily to the three misunderstandings of "comparative literature," that are "narrowing," "overgeneralization," and "trivialization." Narrowing is the over-regulation of study object and horizon, and a narrow understanding of comparability. Overgeneralization exists in cultural studies' aggression to comparative literature and a compromising abandonment of comparative methodology. Finally, trivialization exists in shallow comparison between X and Y, monologue-like discourse researches, and a lack of dual awareness of "world literature" as both …

In her article "Could World Literature be the Future of Comparative Literature?" Jing Zhou reviews the disciplinary history and current situation of comparative literature, and then considers the feasibility and validity of world literature as the future of the discipline in Euro-U.S. scholarship. She addresses the pros and cons of world literature raised by David Damrosch, and concludes that world literature at present is not ready to take the responsibility as the future of comparative literature be­cause of its persistent Euro-U.S. centrism. As an alternative to this perspective, she suggests the dis­cipline reconsider theories from peripheral or semi-peripheral areas.

This thesis seeks to further understanding of early colonial life within New England through an examination of the John and Priscilla Alden First Home site in Duxbury, MA, excavated in 1960 by Roland Robbins. It specifically focuses on the composition and spatial distribution of the ceramic assemblage to discuss household activities and the spaces in which they were performed. The findings of the ceramic analysis detail a collection composed primarily of utilitarian vessels that indicate multiple subsistence farming activities including dairying. The spatial study reveals the significant patterning of these artifacts. It is proposed that these denote specific activity areas …

This study explores racism through the eyes of the one that experiences it. If different types of racism have already been established, the initial premise of the study is that some factors make its experience unique, such as one individual’s markers of identity and his history.

Data have been collected from in-depth interviews with ten participants belonging to five ethnic groups (Latino, African American, Asian, African and Middle Eastern). Those participants were asked to reflect on a specific moment when they witnessed racism, and on why it made them think that event in particular was racist. Then, they were asked …

Variations in a broad sense occur with the differences in the choice of literary text, translation, interpretation, and canonization.
