Examining High School Girls’ Experiences In A Global Leadership Program: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study, Erika Haskins
Examining High School Girls’ Experiences In A Global Leadership Program: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study, Erika Haskins
Theses & Dissertations
The proportion of women in influential leadership positions continues to grow at a slow pace (Beaupre, 2022; Hoyt & Johnson, 2012). Inequalities are still present in the representation of leadership and salary wages (Catalyst, Inc., 2022; Choi, 2018). While progress is evident in regard to diversity and inclusion policies and practices in the workplace, barriers continue to exist that hinder opportunities for women who strive to achieve higher-level positions (Elias, 2018). With more women in leadership positions, advocacy for women and girls can occur, such as access to leadership development programs in schools and organizations (Beaupre, 2022; Shier et al., …

A Talk With Time, Samanatha Kuban
Master's Theses
I chose to write a collection of genre-mixing short stories to depict the vastness and complexity of time as my English Master’s thesis project. Thinking about the constructs of time and how they function or do not function within our society sparked my interest in this field of knowledge and discussion. I am a person that tends to feel a large amount of anxiety surrounding the passage of time or time limits so reading deeper into studies of time and how we think about it in various ways proved to be an outlet for a better understanding. I chose to …

Beyond The Pixelated Mirror: Understanding Avatar Identity And Its Impact On In-Game Advertising And Consumer Behavior, Kyle Coble, Jay Ratican, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the complex dynamics between avatars and in-game advertising, probing how virtual representations influence consumer behavior within digital environments. It delves into the psychological interplay between self-perception and avatar embodiment, suggesting that while younger users may treat avatars as accessories showcasing personal interests, adults tend to opt for idealized selves, affecting their interaction with and responsiveness to virtual marketing. The study contemplates the avatar’s function as both a consumer and influencer in the expanding metaverse, considering the escalating integration of branded items in games. It also highlights potential shifts in consumption patterns as digital and physical realities converge. …

Paraphrasing Of Hedged Statements By Thai And Non-Thai Efl Medical Science Graduate Learners, Worawanna Petchkij
Paraphrasing Of Hedged Statements By Thai And Non-Thai Efl Medical Science Graduate Learners, Worawanna Petchkij
PASAA
Studies examining how EFL learners paraphrase hedges in scientific statements are still rare even though how learners use hedges in academic writing has been extensively investigated. This study compared paraphrasing strategies that Thai (TH) and non-Thai (NTH) EFL medical science graduate students used to paraphrase given hedges appearing in hedged scientific statements and the types of hedges occurring in their paraphrased versions after a lesson on paraphrasing and lessons on both paraphrasing and hedging. The results from pretests and posttests administered after the initial paraphrasing lesson and after two lessons combining paraphrasing and hedging, respectively, showed that both TH and …

The Use Of Task-Based And Game-Based Learning In English Learning At Small Primary Schools In Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, Sasithida Saraiwang, Kanoknate Worawong
PASAA
This study aimed to determine the effects of a teaching model combining Task-Based Learning (TBL) and Game-Based Learning (GBL), called the Orientation Performance Presentation Analysis Application (OPPAA) model, developed by the researchers, on primary students’ English proficiency and to explore teachers’ and students’ opinions of the model. The research employed a one-group pre-test post-test design with seven English teachers and 69 Grade 6 students chosen by means of cluster random sampling and simple random sampling. The instruments used included the OPPAA model, an English proficiency test, an opinion questionnaire, and interview questions. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviation, paired …

Developing Students’ Oral Interaction Competence Using Conversation Analytic Tools, Lemma Kassaye Sileshi
PASAA
The purpose of this study was to explore the development of students’ engagement in oral interactions using conversation analysis (CA, hereafter) tools. A qualitative design of a CA approach was used to understand the role of conversation analysis. Here, CA was used both as a data gathering tool and an analysis technique. Oral tasks were provided to 15 participants of the study prior to the intervention. The participants were taught conversational features using CAbased treatment to develop their knowledge and skills regarding oral interactions in English for four consecutive months. Their oral productions were recorded and analyzed using a CA …

Effects Of Structure, Salience, And Working Memory On L2 Processing Of English Past Participles By L1 Thai Learners, Supakit Thiamtawan, Nattama Pongpairoj
PASAA
This study examined the effects of working memory (WM), structure, and salience on the processing of English relative clauses (RCs) and participial reduced relative clauses (PRRCs) by L1 Thai learners. Salience in this research is the phonological alterations required for irregular verbs to inflect into the past participial form. The study included two types of irregulars with different salience levels. Seventy advanced L1 Thai learners took a reading span task and a self-paced reading task to assess their WM level and processing of past participial forms. The hypotheses proposed that WM, structure, and salience would influence online processing (reading times) …
Measuring Efl Students’ Oral Proficiency Improvement Using Teachers’ Judgment: The Effects Of Two Types Of Classroom Instruction, Dony Marzuki
PASAA
This study investigated the effects of two types of classroom instructions on EFL learners’ oral proficiency by implementing teachers’ judgment. Two intact classes of EFL university students studied a compulsory subject of their department under two different types of classroom instruction. The first group of students was trained with explicit oral strategy training instruction, which taught them to learn and practice strategies to improve their speech fluency. The second group was instructed to practice the task twice as much as the first group using implicit task-based instruction. The audio recording of both groups’ oral task performance in the pre-test and …

Tradition And Satisfaction: The Mob And Lynching In The Georgian Cotton Belt, 1890-1899, Marcus Anthony Thornton
Online Theses and Dissertations
Control and order have been among the defining traits of all societies. Exuding those traits despite a collapsing relevance within their rapidly changing society was modus operandi of most middle-class white southern men at the confluence of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By understanding proposed substantiation for their place in the established social hierarchy, we gain insight into why they fought so adamantly to protect it. Furthermore, expanded understanding aids in formulating explanations for why they felt so entitled to occupy the peak of the sociocultural dominance hierarchy. This analysis is not simply a matter of a skin color. Perceived …

Developing Resilience In The School Setting: A Response To Trauma, Michelle Nutter
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lasting effects of childhood trauma manifest themselves in a variety of problem behaviors witnessed in classrooms across the nation. School staff would benefit from background knowledge to understand students who have experienced trauma and interventions to respond appropriately and positively to behaviors. As a school leader, the purpose of this cross-case qualitative design was twofold. First, I hoped to understand the perceptions of school staff members regarding trauma-informed interventions in elementary public schools. Second, this study explored the infrastructure of select schools that enable principals and staff members to view its students through a trauma lens. Literature on successful interventions …
Self-Authorship And Professional Identity Formation In Professional-Level Athletic Training Students, Matthew Rivera
Self-Authorship And Professional Identity Formation In Professional-Level Athletic Training Students, Matthew Rivera
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of a professional identity is a crucial component of health professions’ education programs and aids in interprofessional collaboration, communication, efficiency, and patient outcomes. Yet, limited research on the development of the individual as a component of professional identity development exists. The use of curricular strategies rooted in the self-authorship theory can close this gap in the development of a professional identity. Self-authorship is a developmental continuum whereby individuals move from following external formulas to building an internal foundation where they make meaning and integrate beliefs into how they think and act. This study aimed to investigate the self-authorship …

At The Crossroads Of Race And Gender During The Spanish Civil War, Kathryn Everly
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Salaria Kea was a prominent African American figure of the Abraham Lincoln Brigades both during and after the Spanish Civil War. The only Black woman to serve in the Brigade nursing unit in Spain, Kea countered misogynist racism both in Jim Crow U.S. and abroad. Her passion for politics and justice led her to sympathize with the plight of the Ethiopians suffering the Italian invasion in 1935 and eventually led her to travel to Spain as part of the Lincoln Brigade. Kea’s position as a double minority (female and Black) within the military structure of the Brigades was later exacerbated …
Black Digital Spaces: Theorizing Resistance In The Wake Of Racist Technology, Shannan Moore
Black Digital Spaces: Theorizing Resistance In The Wake Of Racist Technology, Shannan Moore
Graduate Student Research Fellowship
In the wake of major technological advancement, social media has increasingly become a communal space of daily congregation, particularly for Black people. This paper specifically explores how the Black Diaspora navigates these spaces at a complex intersection of social media and transnational Black histories. I draw from critical Internet studies, Black Diaspora studies, Black feminisms, and media studies to investigate how new technology allows Black folk to engage in conversations about our identity, community, and resistance. Employing a critical ethnographic approach, this paper analyzes online discourse within the Black community about Marvel's Black Panther (2018). This analysis emphasizes the parallels …

Behavioral Market Irrationality: An Exploration Of Financial Literacy Awareness, Behavioral Finance, And Financial System Investing, Ethan Kmiecik
Honors Projects in Finance
Since the dawn of recordable civilization, monetary systems have shaped the developments of history. From the Akkadian shekel to the Roman denarius, the Spanish piece of eight, the British pound sterling, and the United States dollar. The wellbeing of the civilization is dependent on the (mis)management of the currency system. While currencies touch the lives of nearly every human, the history, fundamentals, and causational relationships of currencies and their derivatives are not universally known. This paper examines the degree of financial and currency system awareness within the surveyed population and how it varies within the sub-categories of the surveyed population. …
Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin
Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin
Aristos
There exists in this life, as a result of our fallen condition, a real temptation to the sin of despair. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate why the theological virtue of hope is utterly essential for the Christian life and beatitude by analysing how it overcomes any and all temptations to despair. In order to achieve this end, this paper first defines what the theological virtue of hope consists of, explaining how it elevates man’s nature so as to desire, efficaciously, his final end: Supernatural beatitude. This paper then defines what exactly despair is, explaining how it results …
How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi
How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi
Aristos
Philosophy is a broad and rich discipline, ranging from formal logic to epistemology and aesthetics. However, in Therapy of Desire, Martha Nussbaum claims that Ancient Western philosophers were largely concerned with the pursuit of human happiness and flourishing; that is, ‘eudaimonia.’ In this paper, Aristotle’s philosophical position regarding the human person will be examined in an attempt to explain how one is able to attain eudaimonia. His treatise on this topic is one that contains many different components but can be drawn back to the central question of ‘what is the telos of the human person?’ and how this …

Pappus Of Alexandria, Book Iii Of The Mathematical Collection, Pappus Of Alexandria, John B. Little
Holy Cross Bookshelf
John B. Little is the translator.
This is a translation of Book III of the Mathematical Collection by Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE) from the original Greek to English, following the edition of Friedrich Hultsch. While other books of the Mathematical Collection have been translated into English and short quotations from Book III have appeared in a number of places (see the Introduction), to my knowledge, no complete English translation of Book III has been published. Pappus was very influential as a sort of conduit between knowledge preserved from ancient Greek mathematics and European mathematicians in the …

Healthy V Unhealthy Relationships Program, Alyssa Gehrke
Goal 3: Interpersonal Intelligence Narrative
Adolescents and young adults are going through their years of experiencing some of the most formative relationships and relationship experiences they will have in their life. It is important, therefore, that they be taught about healthy and unhealthy behaviors that can occur in relationships, that they gain knowledge in how to help someone in an unhealthy relationship, and that students understand the nuances of relationships—no relationship is perfect. We will also look at how, due to the rise of media and social media, our views of healthy and unhealthy relationships become influenced by the media. Therefore, the purpose of this …

Networking For Mid-Level Administrators In Higher Education: Increase Job Performance And Reduce Burnout, Laura Glasbrenner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mid-level administrators occupy a complex position within higher education institutions, a role defined by “middleness” (Gleeson & Shain, 1999, p. 488), which characterizes their place in institutional hierarchies between superiors and subordinates. Mid-level administrators often feel isolated since they cannot be seen as having close personal relationships with those above or below them in the rankings. Consequently, mid-level administrators are subject to burnout, a psychological condition resulting from isolation compounded by working long hours reconciling the competing and conflicting needs of supervisors and subordinates, which leaves them emotionally exhausted, physically depleted, and feeling like they have reached a professional dead-end. …

The researchers investigated the usage of appropriate academic English vocabulary in research papers authored by English major students, publications in Thai national journals, and international journals. In total, 708 papers published between 2016 and 2018 were analyzed, consisting of 300 international research papers, 300 national research papers, and 108 research papers authored by English major students. The study focused on four aspects of lexical evaluation to analyze the vocabulary in these papers: lexical profiling, lexical level, lexical variation, and lexical density. The analysis yielded the following results: 1) Lexical profiling revealed that the usage of academic words in students’ research …

Sounds Of Nature: A Jazz Suite For Saxophone And Orchestra, Matteo Sabattini
Dissertations
The rhythmic feature of odd meters is one of the most important characteristics of contemporary jazz music. However, odd meters are not often used in the saxophone and orchestra repertoire. Therefore, in this study, I aimed to write an original suite Sounds of Nature for saxophone and a large ensemble that incorporated aspects of jazz, classical, and improvisation with odd meters and changing meters. This study was unfolded into two parts. The first part was composing the suite in three movements. The second part was discussing and analyzing the odd meters of my composition. I first researched and analyzed music …
