Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh

Perpetua was a young, educated wife and mother who was martyred for her Christian faith. Because she was educated, she was able to record most of the events leading to her martyrdom in her diary. Her account was later supplemented by another author and narrator. The account also includes details about Felicity, a slave girl who was arrested with Perpetua. While Felicity is included in Perpetua’s story, most of the information about them focuses on Perpetua. Throughout history, and particularly in Medieval times, the Church has painted her as a perfect saint who rejected her family for unity with Christ. …

The act of coloring pages, is recognized for its therapeutic value and this research shows how amplifying the artistry of a practitioner with Alzheimer’s disease enhances understanding about the disease, improves relationships and adds value to an underrated art practice. My collaboration with a neighbor experiencing Alzheimer’s disease involved presenting her coloring pages as fine art in a gallery, increasing recognition of the practice as valuable for maintaining normalcy and serving as a model for other people with dementia (PWD) and their caregivers.

The Reflections program at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University offers art gallery tours for adults with dementia and their care partners. Originally an in-person program, Reflections adapted to a virtual model during the COVID-19 pandemic and now utilizes a hybrid model with in-person and online programs. Surveys distributed to Reflections’ participants indicate the benefits of having both in-person and virtual options post-pandemic. Anecdotal survey data and participation statistics show high engagement and satisfaction with the current hybrid mode. This paper will present the experiences that I had with two female Elders in the Acoma Pueblo. By working with a traditional Acoma family, I gained an intimate view of the positionality of the family structure, intergenerational teaching, and the Acoma culture. Like my experiences with many Eastern Tribes (my ancestral lineage is with the Powhaton Society), the Acoma culture is a matrilineal society. This paper will include anecdotal narratives along with images of the Pueblo, Sky City, and traditional ceramic forms. This paper focuses on the intersection of law and music. Specifically, the intersection between music copyright law and music theory, and the role of musicologists and music theorists in copyright infringement cases. In particular, the influence they have on court decisions when acting as expert witnesses, or forensic musicologists. Recent decisions regarding copyright infringement in popular music have been strongly influenced by testimony from these forensic musicologists due to the imbalance of musical understanding between the expert and the court.

A 55-year research project started searching for the equivalent of the U.S. “Slave Narrative” in Brazil, the American nation that enslaved nearly 50% of the African captives, and has the 2nd largest black population in the world. Delving into the archives of 4 continents and the publications of the “nova historiografia,” revealed Brazil’s unique history of slavery and required the critical abandonment of the U.S. genre to construct the “Narrativa Escravizada Brasileira” sui generi.

The purpose of this dissertation is to emphasize notions of citizenship and accessibility as experienced by Black women Veterans. By expanding our worldview of Veteran identity, the ethnographic data demonstrate issues of displacement, alienation, and longing that contribute to the dissonance Black women Veterans rooted in the U.S. South may experience. To forge belonging through place-making, Black women Veterans may seek sisterhood by building sites of resistance in person or online. Findings are based on in-depth interviews with Black women Veterans and participant observation with community partners who service Veteran needs.
