Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Sadhbh “Sive” Neilan is an 83 year old woman who identifies as a lesbian and a feminist. Neilan has been an active political figure, activist, and entrepreneur in the Southern Maine area since immigrating here in 1978. Neilan served as President of MLGPA (Maine lesbian gay political alliance) for a short period of time and ran as a democrat for the State Senate in the early 1990s. Neilan also owned and ran New Leaf Books, a feminist alternative bookstore in Rockport, Maine. In this interview, Neilan discusses the intersectional nature of her queer identity and feminist identity.

The development of psychology in Vietnam is closely tied to its colonial history and the 30-year division of the country into two states. In the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, psychology was intricately connected with education, pedagogy, and teacher training. This emphasis continued throughout the country post-unification. As Vietnam reformed its economy in the late 1980s and 1990s, the social stresses associated with these changes led to a greater need for mental health services, especially for children and youth. This has led to the development of specialized graduate programs in clinical and school psychology. Currently, 28 universities offer bachelor’s degrees in …

Kazembe Balagun is a Harlem-born and Bronx-based leftist intellectual leader, community organizer, and current executive director of the Maysles Documentary Center.

Balagun was born Keith Alexander Mitchell, in 1976, to parents who had moved to New York City from South Carolina during the Great Migration in 1961. They were one of the first families to move into the Polo Grounds, the Harlem public housing development, before making the move to Co-op City in 1994. The increasing complexity of cybersecurity challenges necessitates a holistic educational approach that integrates both technical skills and humanistic perspectives. This article examines the importance of infusing humanities disciplines such as history, ethics, political science, sociology, law, and anthropology—into cybersecurity education. Through a pilot course developed for Staten Island Technical High School, aligned with the New York State K-12 Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards, students were introduced to an interdisciplinary curriculum that combined technical cybersecurity training with historical analysis, ethical reasoning, and sociopolitical context. In this chapter, we embark on a journey to explore the hopes for a better future, the American Dream, shared by a group of transnational, first-generation Hispanic/Latino college students located along the border between the United States of America (Texas) and Mexico (Tamaulipas). We gathered the data through a blend of ethnographic interviews and surveys to unravel, juxtapose, and deliberate upon the experiences shared. Employing a thematic analysis methodology inspired by Braun and Clarke (2006), we categorize the data into two overarching categories. Persona 4, through the use of nostalgia and the process of native-place making known as furusato-zukuri, creates a fictional rural space, using authentic Japanese imagery and cultural symbols to make Inaba a 21st-century furusato. In doing so, Persona 4 critiques city life in a neoliberal society, which causes a growing disillusionment with urban living due to a constant state of unrest. The purpose of this dissertation was to experiment with qualitative research methodologies while exploring the complexities of doctoral education, research practices, philosophies of inquiry, and other topics intersecting with(in) educational scholarship. My vision for this work was fueled by postmodernist critiques of humanist education, frustrations with the methodological status quo pervasive in educational research, and deep concerns about the unsustainability of performance-focused teaching and learning.

Conglomeration, Digital Disruption, And Covid-19: Upheaval-Driven Changes To The Roles Of U.S. Local Television News Directors, Suzanne Lysak, Keren Henderson

Film and Media Arts Faculty Articles and Research

This mixed methods study analyzes how broadcast news directors renegotiate their roles under organizational and cultural times of change. Even before COVID-19, local television news directors, one of the two predominant groups of journalism managers in the United States, were experiencing shifts in roles related to their growing work responsibilities. These changes were the result of long-term workplace upheavals including conglomeration and digital disruption. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, news directors found themselves managing through this additional, short-term upheaval. The authors of this study sought to discover how industry upheavals impact broadcast newsroom management roles.
