Over 40% of US adults and 20% of children live with obesity. It is related to increased risks of diseases including type II diabetes and cancer, is a source of harmful stigma, and impairs child development. Appetitive traits describing patterns of food approach and avoidance behaviors may serve as windows into the underlying pathophysiology of obesity. As both obesity and appetitive traits are heritable, common genetic drivers of obesity may lead to phenotypic obesity through appetitive traits as a disease mechanism. Additionally, GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have been shown to exert their profound clinical effects in part by modulating appetite. …

We investigate the implications of cybersecurity breaches for financial analysts because they play an important role as information intermediaries in capital markets, and it is unknown whether analysts’ earnings forecasts are affected by cybersecurity breaches. Based on a sample of cybersecurity breaches from 2005 to 2018, we find that analysts’ earnings forecasts for firms with cybersecurity breaches are less accurate and more dispersed after a breach than for firms without such breaches. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the adverse effects of cybersecurity breaches on analysts’ earnings forecasts are more pronounced for firms operating in more volatile business environments, for …

We investigate the relation between auditor quality and client firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure. Using an international sample of firms from 36 countries over the period 2009–2018 and a measure of the extent of CSR disclosure from Bloomberg, we find strong evidence that client firms with higher quality auditors provide more CSR disclosure. In cross-sectional analyses, we show that the relation between auditor quality and CSR disclosure is accentuated when the information environment is poorer and when the financial reporting environment and the legal institutions are weaker. True crime has long captivated public interest, evolving from sensationalized accounts in the Middle Ages to the widespread popularity of modern podcasts. This qualitative study explores the ethical complexities of true crime media by examining how it intersects with criminal investigations, public perception, and victim advocacy. Through in-depth interviews with law enforcement officers, victim advocates, and true crime content creators, the study investigates differing attitudes toward the role of podcasts in active and cold cases. Using Colaizzi’s (1978) phenomenological method, data were analyzed to uncover shared and divergent themes across professional roles. Since its introduction in 2018, the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) Framework has advanced ecology education. Yet, ecology educators have had different understandings of aspects of the Framework. Here, we describe the updates to the original Framework that aim to provide more clarity. Specifically, we describe higher-level changes in how the Framework is presented on the 4DEE website, changes to some of the elements within the dimensions, mostly in the Human–Environment Interactions dimension, and perhaps most substantively, replacing the lists of subelements with more descriptive paragraphs that explain the intent of the elements. Background: Given existing evidence linking indoor gas combustion with potential health effects, we aimed to quantify from epidemiologic field studies the health impacts associated with residential gas cooking and unvented heating.

Methods: We evaluated and synthesized results from peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies that isolated associations between exposure to residential gas cooking and/or unvented heating and an unrestricted range of health outcomes. We focused on studies conducted since 2000 that cited at least one of five, well-regarded studies. We evaluated relevant studies and computed pooled effect estimates, where at least three studies contributed data, using random effect meta-analysis models with inverse-variance weighting. …

Introduction: Oseltamivir phosphate (OP), a widely used antiviral prodrug for influenza, requires accurate Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) classification to inform formulation and bioequivalence decisions. Despite its high solubility, the permeability characteristics of OP remain inadequately defined. Methods: This study evaluated the intestinal permeability of OP using the in situ Single-Pass Intestinal Perfusion (SPIP) model in male Sprague Dawley rats. Two validated analytical methods - High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) were developed and compared. This doctoral capstone project developed, implemented, and evaluated a Deaf-centered, ASL-accessible community art program at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in Augusta, Georgia. The project addressed communication and environmental barriers that may limit participation in meaningful leisure and community-based occupations. Two ASL-interpreted art sessions and a community art show were completed, with evaluation using adapted PROMIS-based survey items, implementation observations, and quality improvement feedback. Because only two usable anonymous survey responses were available at each time point, findings were summarized descriptively and interpreted as feasibility and implementation information rather than evidence of effectiveness. This dissertation in practice is designed to support New Kent County Public Schools, which noticed an increase in students being referred for special education services without a concomitant increase in students being found eligible for such services. Systems mapping revealed a root cause of this discrepancy is that the division lacked a comprehensive intervention plan consistently implemented, and - as a result - some students were referred for special education services not due to the presence of a potential learning disability, but merely for lack of other available options. Frontline communities disproportionately feel the impacts of these events, revealing gaps in the services and resources that should allow these communities to prepare for and recover from disruptions more effectively. This plan, developed for Groundwork RVA, explores neighborhood-scale resilience microhubs as a tool to fill these gaps and increase resilience in frontline communities.

The determination of muzzle-to-target distance remains a significant challenge in forensic casework. Current approaches to gunshot residue (GSR) analysis rely primarily on colorimetric testing to indicate chemical components present and subjective interpretation, limiting specificity and contributing to ongoing scrutiny within the field. This study investigates a quantitative method for estimating shooting distance based on the concentration of lead present in GSR samples (w/w%) with the utilization of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). While DNA profiling of sexual assault evidence can identify biological contributors, determining the tissue source of recovered profiles remains a significant challenge, particularly in cases of suspected oral assault involving mixtures of epithelial cells. The initial goal of this study was to identify non-genetic signatures for differentiating two types of epithelial cells relevant to oral assaults, saliva epithelial cells and epidermal skin cells. To develop tissue-specific signatures, reference cell populations from saliva and epidermal skin surfaces were collected from 20 donors and analyzed using full spectrum flow cytometry.

Tattooing, also known as stippling, is a phenomenon that occurs from excess gunpowder being discharged from a firearm into the skin, and presents as reddish-brown or orange lesions surrounding an entrance wound on the skin. Distance determination is a practice used in many forensic laboratories to establish possible ranges of distances between the muzzle of a firearm and a target, and stippling is commonly used for this comparison. Mean length of utterance (MLU) is a common measure of expressive language complexity in young children, including autistic children. However, means, by nature, obscure some information about spread and variability in data. Thus, we aimed to examine a new approach to characterizing linguistic complexity in autistic children by investigating the validity of two novel measures—range of length of utterance (RLU), standard deviation of length of utterance (SDLU)—alongside established measures: MLU and total utterances (TU).

Introduction/Purpose: Type 2 diabetes and obesity are major risk factors for delayed wound healing in chronic foot ulcers. This study investigated whether a high-fat diet induces diabetes-like metabolic dysfunction in mice and characterized associated morphological changes and macrophage polarization during wound healing. Macrophages exist as pro-inflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes that regulate tissue repair.

Introduction: Diabetes is associated with impaired wound healing and a high incidence of chronic, non-healing ulcers, largely driven by persistent low-grade inflammation. Leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a product of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway, has emerged as a key mediator of this chronic inflammatory state. Hence, this study investigated the role of the 5-LO pathway in cutaneous wound healing under normoglycemic and diabetic conditions using a murine model.

Extended reality (XR) technologies are increasingly positioned as disruptive Industry 5.0 tools for human-centric industrial training and intelligent human–system integration. Coupled with multimodal sensing (eye tracking, EEG, HRV, GSR, and other physiological signals), XR environments promise to make otherwise invisible cognitive demands observable, especially for novice trainees entering complex industrial settings. This paper presents The Incredible Bulk, a multimodal, simulation-based engineering challenge that introduces Grades 4–12 to maritime careers and digital transformation. Students assume the roles of different maritime careers to assemble aircraft carrier bulkhead systems using: VR for spatial orientation and task preview; a 3D model as visual work instruction; paper blueprints for part identification and dimensioning; 3D-printed components for hands-on assembly; and an AR app for quality assurance/inspection. Grounded in constructionism and cognitive apprenticeship, the plan–build–inspect loop externalizes thinking and situates coached, authentic practice that advances engineering design, systems thinking, and technological literacy.

Volunteering among older adults has many potential health benefits; however, older adults with more wealth are also more likely to volunteer in the first place, raising the question of whether they are the ones reaping the most benefits. This study asked two questions: (1) Does formal volunteering improve self-reported health and reduce depressive symptoms in older adults? (2) Does the impact of volunteering on these outcomes differ between older adults in the lowest and highest wealth quintiles?

This thesis highlights the importance of performer mental health as it relates to performance pedagogy. Based on a comprehensive review of traditional western actor training methods, survey data, and interviews, this research proposes a framework through which educators, directors, and performers alike can acknowledge both the artistic value and psychological harm prevalent in many prominent acting techniques. The insights put forth by this thesis extend beyond theatre acting and into television and film acting respectively, culminating in a series of practical steps -transferrable to any medium - for implementing a restructured and more human-centered approach to classrooms, workshops, and rehearsal …
