Metagenomic Polymorphic Toxin Effector And Immunity Profiling Predicts Microbiome Development And Disease-Related Dysbiosis, Hunter W. Schroer, Francesco Beghini, Juan Antonio Raygoza Garay, Nicholas A. Christakis, Dustin E. Bosch

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bacteria use antagonistic interbacterial weapons, such as polymorphic toxin secretion systems (TSS), to compete for niches in the human gut microbiome. We hypothesized that TSS influence gut microbiome development and disease-related dysbiosis. We developed a bioinformatic marker gene approach (PolyProf) to quantify TSS including ~200 effector and immunity genes and applied it to ~15,000 publicly available human metagenomes. PolyProf alpha and beta diversity readily distinguished 12 different human disease states and enabled the construction of highly accurate linear regression classifier machine learning models. Elastic net machine learning models integrating bacterial taxonomy with PolyProf had strong predictive value for 12 disease …

Deep Learning Approach For Microwave Imaging Based On Deep Convolutional Asymmetric Encoder-Decoder Structure And Physics-Induced Loss, He Ming Yao, Shiji Song, Michael Kwok Po Ng, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we introduce an innovative deep learning (DL) methodology designed for real-time quantitative microwave imaging (MWI). Our approach is centered around the utilization of a deep convolutional asymmetric encoder-decoder structure (DCAEDS), which requires only a single-frequency far-field measurement of the electromagnetic (EM) scattered field as input and subsequently predicts the contrasts (permittivities) of the target materials. During the offline training process, we incorporate an EM forward solver specifically crafted to compute the EM scattered field generated by the predicted target contrasts (permittivities) produced by the DCAEDS. The DCAEDS is seamlessly integrated with this EM forward solver to optimize …

Effect Of Sample Properties On Short-Circuited Waveguide Measurements For Materials Characterization, Alexander Hook, Jared Sinkey, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microwave materials characterization measurements can be performed using a number of well-established approaches. One such approach, the filled transmission line approach featuring a short-circuited rectangular waveguide (SC-RWG) sample holder, is known to have sample placement restrictions related to measurement viability. This work focuses on this approach and addresses the measurement restrictions within the context of sample length and dielectric properties. The complex reflection properties, S11, of a sample placed in a SC-RWG sample holder are studied to quantitively define when a sample must be offset from the SC-end. The impact of the sample holder is also studied from a measurement …

Infimum Dimension Nash Embeddings For 2d Projective Shape Analysis, Robert L. Paige, Vic Patrangenaru Jan 2026

Infimum Dimension Nash Embeddings For 2d Projective Shape Analysis, Robert L. Paige, Vic Patrangenaru

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vector embeddings make complicated data extracted from networks, words and images, more amendable to data science applications. At the present time, the Veronese-Whitney (VW) matrix embedding of the real projective space is the state of the art for making inference about digital images from an uncalibrated camera, such as a cell phone or security camera. In this work we consider vector embeddings for the projective shape data and in particular determine the minimum dimension isometric (distance-preserving or Nash) vector embedding for a projective space. We determine such an embedding for the projective plane in closed-form. From this embedding we determine …

A Fully Discrete Semi-Implicit Numerical Scheme And Its Optimal Error Estimates For Cahn-Hilliard-Mhd Model With Variable Density, Dongmei Duan, Fuzheng Gao, Xiaoming He, Yanping Lin Jan 2026

A Fully Discrete Semi-Implicit Numerical Scheme And Its Optimal Error Estimates For Cahn-Hilliard-Mhd Model With Variable Density, Dongmei Duan, Fuzheng Gao, Xiaoming He, Yanping Lin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes and analyzes a fully discrete semi-implicit unconditionally energy stable numerical scheme to solve the Cahn-Hilliard Magnetohydrodynamics (Cahn-Hilliard-MHD) model with variable density. The unconditional energy stability and optimal L2 error estimates are established for the fully discrete scheme. Major challenges in error estimation arise from the variable density, the strong nonlinearities, and the multi-physics coupling of the model. Under the mathematical induction framework, the Ritz quasi-projection and the Stokes quasi-projection, proposed in [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 61(3):1218-1245, 2023], are utilized to avoid the gradient terms of the projection errors. The H−1 superconvergence error estimates of Ritz …

Insurance And Chapter 11 Bankruptcy: Is The Insurance Neutrality Doctrine Dead?, Mikaela Deleon Jan 2026

Insurance And Chapter 11 Bankruptcy: Is The Insurance Neutrality Doctrine Dead?, Mikaela Deleon

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Insurers have traditionally been denied “party in interest” status under the Bankruptcy Code due to the longstanding insurance neutrality doctrine. The insurance neutrality doctrine prevents insurers from challenging a chapter 11 bankruptcy plan as a section 1109(b) “party in interest” if the plan does not increase the insurance company’s liability from pre-bankruptcy levels. If none of their rights or obligations were impacted by the plan, insurance companies were previously left without a means to challenge a proposed reorganization plan. As a result, insurance companies providing liability insurance to corporations stricken with mass tort lawsuits ran the risk of becoming the …

Asbestos 2.0: A Looming Disaster At The Intersection Of Pfas Litigation And The Texas Two-Step––Even After Purdue Pharma, Tyler Sheridan Jan 2026

Asbestos 2.0: A Looming Disaster At The Intersection Of Pfas Litigation And The Texas Two-Step––Even After Purdue Pharma, Tyler Sheridan

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Companies that have manufactured, processed, or sold per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”), also known as “forever chemicals,” face mounting financial pressure as the number of claims against them skyrocket. With billions of dollars already allocated to settlements and new lawsuits continuously filed, liable corporations may utilize the Texas Two-Step to minimize financial risk. The maneuver would enable solvent companies to isolate PFAS liability and discard it into bankruptcy, potentially delaying and capping payouts for claimants in the process. Third-party releases have survived Purdue, leaving the forum’s ability to permanently resolve mass tort liability intact. Moreover, escalating litigation may prompt …

Socioeconomic Factors Affecting Pulmonary Functiontest Follow-Up Rates, Celine Agidigbo Jan 2026

Socioeconomic Factors Affecting Pulmonary Functiontest Follow-Up Rates, Celine Agidigbo

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Background

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are associated with significant physical, mental, and social burdens that impact patients’ quality of life (Franssen et al., 2018). Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is an essential diagnostic test for identifying and managing pulmonary conditions. Missed or delayed follow-up after abnormal PFT results may derail disease management and lead to frequent hospital readmissions, thereby disease management and patient outcomes.

According to Braveman et al. (2010), socioeconomic status (SES), defined by factors such as income, education, and employment, has been widely associated with disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. This paper examines the impact …
