Dysregulation Of Alternative Splicing Patterns In The Ovaries Of Reproductively Aged Mice, Adnan T. Alsamaraee, Vanessa L. Correll, Julius O. Nyalwidhe, Pavla Brachova, Nehemiah S. Alvarez

Female reproductive aging is characterized by progressive deterioration of ovarian function, yet the molecular mechanisms driving these changes remain incompletely understood. Here, we used long-read direct RNA-sequencing to map transcript isoform changes in mouse ovaries across reproductive age. Comparing young and aged mice after controlled gonadotropin stimulation, we identified widespread alternative splicing changes, including shifts in exon usage, splice site selection, and transcript boundaries. Aged ovaries exhibited increased isoform diversity, favoring distal start and end sites, and a significant rise in exon skipping and intron retention events. African American (AA) women face disproportionate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk due to adverse social determinants of health (SDoH), including lower socioeconomic status (SES). Physical activity (PA) and plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) modulate CVD risk, but their relationships with SDoH remain unclear. This study examines associations between SDoH, PA, and plasma EVs in a Washington, DC-based cohort of at-risk AA women. Participants (N = 24, Age: 57 ± 12, BMI: 35 ± 6, ASCVD: 9 ± 5) joined the Step It Up Community-Engaged, Digital Health Physical Activity Intervention pilot study. This study explores the functional interaction between bank development and stock market development in the face of uncertainty variables. The geography of the study is one of the largest economies in Africa—Nigeria—regarding the following variables: credit to the private sector (CPS), broad money (M2) stock market capitalization (MCAP), and industrial production (IP), which are all scaled by the gross domestic product (GDP) and used in natural log form. Additionally, we included the natural logarithm of a measure of monetary policy uncertainty, which represents the uncertainty variable. The historical narrative about American slavery included many topics such as the African slave trade, the Middle Passage, slave culture, rebellions, religion, and abolition.  This study revealed more information to be examined in the record of American slavery relating to the presidents of the United States and their enslaved laborers.  This oversight proved prevalent during the years leading to the American Civil War from 1820-1860.  Therefore, this dissertation focused upon the enslaved and free Black people who intersected with the presidents and their friends, political acquaintances, and family.  By studying their lives, this dissertation revealed that the slaves associated with …

This thesis examines how opera functioned as a medium for articulating and negotiating national identity in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Focusing on Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa (1904) and Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (1911), it explores how composers employed dramatic structure, linguistic choice, and musical language to construct culturally specific forms of expression within a rapidly shifting political and social landscape. Drawing on approaches from musicology and cultural history, the study considers how operatic works not only reflect national identity but actively participate in its formation.

Finding, Founding, And Forging: Queer Formulations Of Family In Nineteenth-Century British Novels, Brian Hicks

This dissertation examines how nineteenth-century British novels imagine and negotiate queer formulations of family at moments when biological kinship, marriage, and inheritance were increasingly formalized as social and legal imperatives. Reading canonical texts by Austen, Shelley, Wilde, Brontë, and Hardy, alongside the proto-modern and modernist work of Joseph Conrad and Virginia Woolf, I argue that these novels resist consanguinity as the sole basis of family and instead theorize queer kinship as something found, founded, or forged through affinity, care, and shared orientation rather than blood or reproduction. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of school and district administrators regarding English Language Learner (ELL) criteria that affect the academic trajectories of Long-Term English Learners (LTELs). ELL criteria differ across states and are used to demonstrate not only English language proficiency but also ELL students' academic performance. While English-only students are not required to demonstrate their academic use of English, ELL students are required to demonstrate English-language academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to be reclassified as English proficient. Red Clover Isoflavones And Establishment In The Context Of Tall Fescue Toxicosis Mitigation In The Mid-South, Jonathan L. Stephens

Low levels of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) have been shown to mitigate tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) toxicosis symptoms. This is because of the presence of plant-produced compounds known as isoflavones. Production of a red clover supplement on a commercial scale would require industrial-level processing of raw plant material into granules or pellets. The first study of this thesis evaluated the impact of drying temperature on bioavailability of isoflavones. Drying temperatures up to 104°C had minimal impact on isoflavone concentrations. Additionally, varietal differences in isoflavone concentrations were documented. The second study of this thesis evaluated optimal establishment …

This article is part of a symposium on W. Bradley Wendel’s Canceling Lawyers: Case Studies of Accountability, Toleration, and Regret. I agree with Wendel’s two fundamental claims: first, and contrary to the reigning conception, lawyers can be held accountable for choosing to represent a particular client (assuming they have a choice), and therefore that they cannot use their professional role as a “magic shield or force field” (Wendel’s term) to deflect all criticism. To aid in training and the reduction of injury risk, there are several procedures for grading the ability of an athlete to make a cut or change-of direction motion. Over the course of embryonic development, the ectodermal cell layer gives rise to a vast array of neurons and glia patterned across the central nervous system (CNS). Neurulation and specification is achieved in the ectoderm through temporospatial patterns of transcription factor (TF) expression, many of which are conserved across evolutionary history. These conserved regulatory motifs allow the use of Drosophila melanogaster to study the mechanisms of neurodevelopment across the animal kingdom. Of the estimated 2.3 million women globally who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, nearly 25% will be diagnosed with the triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype. Because TNBC lacks specific targets present in other breast cancers, conventional selective treatments are ineffective making TNBC more difficult to treat. TNBC is the most lethal subtype of breast cancer in women and causes approximately 150,000 deaths annually, highlighting the critical need for effective therapeutics. Historically, low insulin levels were the signaling event considered responsible for metabolic adaptations to starvation, such as increased sympathetic outflow and increased serum levels of ketones, glucagon, and free fatty acids. Leptin, a hormone produced by adipose tissue, is known to decrease in response to caloric restriction. Recent work in the field suggested that leptin infusion in the final hours of a 48-hour fast reversed all metabolic adaptations to starvation, thus raising questions about an underappreciated role of leptin in the starvation response. We investigate the level of gender parity in political news reporting at the New York Times. We apply a media sociology approach to examine how gender stereotypes, women in media leadership, and women in political leadership interact to affect the extent to which women journalists appear in bylines about domestic and foreign affairs news. We leverage an original data collection of nearly 3,000 news articles published from 2007–2020. We find several key results. The act of passing would seem to be the opposite of activism because it is an act meant to avoid detection. While the language of passing is, itself, problematic, African-descended people passing as white might be read as attempting to capitulate to a racial binary. Aza-BODIPY’s are a class of fluorescent dyes characterized by
a boron-difluoride core coordinated to a dipyrromethene-like
framework, where a nitrogen atom replaces the central meso-
carbon atom-referred to as the "aza" position. These dyes are
highly valued in biomedical research where there can be limitations in imaging systems, due to their photophysical properties and the ease with which their structures can be chemically modified. Its structure causes a bathochromic (red) shift in both absorption and emission, typically extending into the
near-infrared (NIR) region. Such properties make them useful
fluorescent markers for applications like tumor imaging and
targeting.

Many residents living along the U.S. Gulf Coast face the issue of rising costs for property insurance due to the increasing impacts from more intense hurricanes. This study evaluates how North Atlantic hurricane (>= 33 ms-1) landfall wind speed and storm surge impact property insurance losses along the U.S. Gulf Coast during different phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation from 1980 to 2024. The tropical cyclone data used in this study are obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North Atlantic HURDAT2 database.
