This research project investigates how different flavors of commercially available wet cat food utilized as bait influences wildlife visitation frequency and species diversity. 19 motion-activated trail cameras were deployed within a forested area in Humboldt County to compare wildlife responses. This study aims to assess species-specific attraction and deterrence effects of different bait flavors and test the hypothesis that certain bait flavors will significantly increase wildlife visitation frequency and diversity, while others will have neutral or deterrent effects on specific species. Simulations evaluate battery performance under common usage scenarios and varying states of health. Results indicate that high-energy activities significantly accelerate depletion, while battery aging and elevated temperatures reduce overall runtime. Model predictions align with benchmark data and observed usage patterns, demonstrating the framework’s ability to replicate realistic discharge behavior. Coastal dune ecosystems have been significantly altered through extensive vegetation removal and human development, and through the establishment of European beach grass. Arthropods play an important role in decomposition and nutrient cycling, and are highly sensitive to changes in vegetation structure. Thus, they are strong indicators of environmental changes and restoration success. This project aimed to evaluate the effects of dune restoration on arthropod abundance and species composition through comparison between restored and unrestored dune sites in the Humboldt County, California, which can then be used to evaluate the progress and success of restoration efforts.

When working to identify active serial killers, police collect data on the killer’s behavioral patterns to predict their activity. Peter Sutcliffe, also known as the Yorkshire Ripper, started killing in the 1900s and primarily targeted women from red-light districts. This project uses an agent-based modeling approach that incorporates the behavioral choices of Sutcliffe to predict the home location of a killer with similar traits. The accuracy of our model was measured by calculating the distance between the predicted and the true house location of the killer. Abalone populations in Northern California have declined due to overharvesting and environmental stressors. This study examines how marine protection, depth, and microhabitat exposure influence abalone size and abundance. Using scuba-based transect surveys, we compare populations inside a Marine Conservation Area and a nearby unprotected site. We predict larger and more abundant abalone in protected areas and in sheltered microhabitats. This research helps evaluate the effectiveness of marine protected areas in supporting recovery of this ecologically and economically important species.

In a rural primary care clinic, pediatric asthma telephone triage is a high-risk process because nurses must make rapid decisions based on caregiver report alone. Inconsistent assessment, documentation, disposition, and follow-up may delay escalation, increase avoidable urgent care use, and worsen inequities, including for American Indian/Alaska Native children. This theoretical quality improvement project proposes caregiver asthma action plans with teach-back, a standardized RN triage workflow with EHR prompts and training, and a closed-loop follow-up protocol to improve safety, consistency, and timely follow-up.

In many inpatient oncology settings, screening is inconsistent and limited to admission, leaving changes in distress undetected. This quality improvement project proposes a structured, multilevel approach, including standardized screening, improved communication, and policy-driven protocols. Guided by the Johns Hopkins model, the goal is to improve early identification and timely intervention. High blood pressure is a leading cause of preventable stroke and heart disease, with rural populations experiencing worse outcomes. In primary care, elevated blood pressure is often identified, but follow-up is not always consistent or timely. Disparities in blood pressure control also exist across racial and ethnic groups. This quality improvement project focuses on strengthening follow-up through nurse-led interventions, including home monitoring support, follow-up calls, and standardized clinic workflows. Improving consistency in care may increase blood pressure control and reduce preventable complications.

This study examines how testosterone and cortisol interact to influence competitive drive and athletic performance in female collegiate athletes. Guided by the dual-hormone hypothesis, researchers predicted that testosterone would enhance competitiveness when cortisol is low. Results showed a significant interaction predicting competitive drive, but no effect on sprint performance. Additionally, menstrual cycle phase did not significantly impact hormones, motivation, or performance, suggesting that hormonal fluctuations may shape psychological aspects of competition more than physical outcomes.

My study looked to see if shorebirds had a preference of foraging habitat based on how secluded the habitat is. I had 3 sites for data collection that varied in seclusion levels which were high, moderate, and low seclusion. The time of day for data collection was determined by the tide and was kept consistent throughout the whole study. This study was conducted locally at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary during the current spring semester of 2026. Data collection was collected by identifying and counting each individual for each species at one site for 10-15 minutes at each site.

The High School Sash Ceremony significantly enhances Black graduates’ cultural identity, community belonging, and educational aspirations. In a study using surveys, interviews, and focus groups with 87 participants, 94% reported increased cultural pride, 89% felt stronger connection to the Black community, and 78% noted positive impacts on their educational goals. These findings highlight the ceremony’s role in fostering belonging, addressing systemic inequities, and promoting educational equity in predominantly white institutions, suggesting that expanding and integrating such culturally affirming celebrations can strengthen support for Black students and their families.

Bat species diversity can be influenced by landscape features in both urban and natural areas, especially due to habitat fragmentation. The main objective of this study will be determining if bat species richness varies according to different patch sizes across three parks in Arcata, California. We hypothesized that the largest park would have the most species richness present, and if the number of species found at a particular site is higher than adjacent sites, then habitat maintenance for foraging and roosting opportunities can be concentrated toward that area.

This project highlights the implementation and impact of data-informed social work curriculum with school-linked practicums. Through creating a curriculum that connected public data dashboards to students practicum placements, social work students critically evaluated publicly available data. This curriculum exemplified the required generalist social work competency of understanding the relationship between practice-informed research and research-informed practice. This project synthesizes the curriculum and student reflections from pre and post surveys, as well as a reflective memo assignment completed after the class.

As the Latine community has increased in rural Humboldt County and in rural regions across the country, educators and researchers have struggled to address the needs of this student population. These challenges are reinforced by deficit perspectives that frame multicultural and multilingual student populations as “culturally lacking” or as “English learners”. Such narratives continue to drive policy in the K-12 education system and contribute to persistent inequities; Latine students represent the lowest educational attainment across other rural student populations (Sansone, 2023, p.60).
