This study examines the relationship between humor and horror in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. By analyzing episodes of supernatural horror over the course of the text, I establish a repeated pattern of confusion between magical and mundane storyworlds in each of these episodes, where the protagonist misunderstands the nature of the storyworld which they occupy. This confusion between storyworlds in the early episodes of the text creates horror for these protagonists, but humor for the audiences of their stories, internal and external alike. Black women are up to twice as likely to experience infertility requiring fertility treatment to conceive, however Black women’s experiences of infertility and seeking medical treatment to become pregnant is sparsely represented in current empirical literature. Research on the topic of infertility and seeking fertility treatments has correlated infertility and fertility treatments with anxiety and depressive symptoms, but few studies have explicitly examined how Black women cope with these experiences. Beyond Perspective: A Spectacular History Of The Three-Dimensional Image Through The Stereoscope, The View-Master, And Marcel Duchamp, Margaret Hankel

This dissertation examines the technology of the stereoscope and its threedimensional image called a stereograph. Invented in 1838 by the British physicist Charles Wheatstone, the stereoscope produces an optical illusion in which depth and volume appear to project both inward and outward from a stereograph’s two-dimensional surface. This spectacular, three-dimensional image enjoyed widespread popularity in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries as the technology underwent multiple reinventions. By examining stereoscopy with an art historical lens, this dissertation considers the technology in relation to the tradition of perspective and illusionism in art. Are men always feminized when they weep? It is well-known that Greek epic heroes like Odysseus weep without losing their claim to masculinity; does the same rule hold true for Roman epic heroes? In this dissertation I examine how men weep in Roman epic poetry of the early Roman empire as an aspect of the performance of masculinity. Specifically, I explore the multiple valences of male tears and related emotional expressions across three core texts: Vergil’s Aeneid, Lucan’s Bellum Civile, and Statius’ Thebaid. The South Asian American community is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States (Budiman & Ruiz, 2021). While research has explored various aspects of the South Asian American diaspora, limited research has focused on the caste system in the diaspora. This study examined caste on a macro level in American policy making. Using a qualitative case study design, it explored how the policy making process of California Senate Bill 403, a bill intended to prohibit caste discrimination, impacted structural stigma on caste and demonstrated interest convergence between caste supremacy and white supremacy in the United States. Objective: Brief behavioral interventions targeting pain (Physical Self-Regulation, PSR) or sleep (Brief Behavioral Intervention for Insomnia, BBTI) show promise for interdisciplinary management of chronic pain, though their feasibility with chronic musculoskeletal orofacial pain (MSK-OFP) populations remains underexplored. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of these interventions in a university-affiliated tertiary OFP clinic and explored clinical changes in pain, sleep, and other secondary outcomes.

Equine placental dysfunction impairs fetal growth and disrupts pregnancy outcomes. Despite many advances in diagnosis, the molecular pathophysiology of equine placentitis and premature placental separation remains poorly understood. However, the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-α) pathway is related to placental hypoxia, and its modulation in placental diseases has been shown in other species. Therefore, we hypothesized that in conditions marked by equine placental dysfunction, oxygen deprivation in the chorioallantois membrane triggers the activation of the HIF-α pathway, which is related to molecular alterations associated with placental insufficiency. Multilingual students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) were underrepresented in the professional literature. Accordingly, the purpose of this research brief was to contribute to an emerging line of research by documenting the voices of SLIFE with regard to barriers to high school graduation they experienced during their educational experiences alongside what supports they experienced that helped remove such barriers. Data was collected through interviews and focus groups, where participants provided first hand accounts of their high school experiences. Few intervention studies address the needs of young adults with high‑functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as they transition toward adulthood. This study used a single‑subject multiple‑baseline design across participants and skills to evaluate the effects of a modified Coach in the Kitchen curriculum paired with Behavioral Skills Training (BST) on the acquisition of kitchen safety behaviors. Three adults with high‑functioning autism were taught task‑analyzed steps for safe use of a kitchen peeler, knife, and hot liquids. Instruction incorporated modeling, rehearsal, feedback, prompting, and strategies for generalization and maintenance. Copyright and AI need not be a copyright no man’s land. Recent decisions by the Copyright Office have gotten so much media attention that many creators are unsure if they can secure copyright protection if they use AI as a creative tool. The proposed creative control paradigm can help us all tackle the challenge of determining when works created with the assistance of AI are copyrightable. Instead of relying on long-established nuanced precedent for protecting works generated with new technology, the Copyright Office asserts that any content generated with assistance from AI tools is unprotectable. In short, a government agency’s interpretation of a federal statute. All three cases go to the heart of the administrative state: the ability of an agency, staffed by experts in the field, to interpret static statutory language to offer practical guidance to an ever-evolving industry.

Desperation Finance: Merchant Cash Advances In Bankruptcy And Beyond, Kara J. Bruce

Over the last several years, Merchant Cash Advances (“MCAs”) have risen in prominence as a form of short-term financing for distressed small businesses. MCA transactions are distinct from most small-business lending because they are not structured as loans at all. Rather, in exchange for a lump sum of cash, the merchant purports to sell to the funder an unidentified percentage of its future receipts or receivables. This structure allows funders to sidestep the application of lending regulations and usury protections, but it strains the foundations of commercial law and generates a host of interpretive challenges.

Commentators have leveled trenchant critiques of collateral consequences of criminal conviction, analogizing them to a form of “civil death.” This Essay develops the related concept of “civil death by a thousand cuts” in two senses. First, penalties such as voting bans or deportation after a conviction are often just the tip of the iceberg. Second, a system of far-flung, intertwined civil and criminal penalties portends the death of a civil society capable of recognizing and mediating excessive penalties. This Article highlights the central—and under-theorized—role that disclosure plays within trademark law. By loose analogy, the patent disclosure requirement is a cornerstone of patent law, embodying the “patent bargain” where an inventor must disclose their invention in exchange for a twenty-year monopoly. This quid pro quo is believed to stimulate the progress of science and technology, making patent disclosure the very pulse of the patent regime. However, the fundamental importance of disclosure in trademark law remains underexplored. Post-employment non-competition agreements (“noncompetes”) have been part of the common law dating back to at least 1414. The past 16 years have seen an unprecedented wave of scrutiny that is mostly aimed at curtailing these agreements, culminating in the contentious 2024 Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) attempted noncompete ban. With the broad FTC ban on hold for the foreseeable future, the spotlight shifts back to the states where innovation in noncompete policy is blossoming.
