The drafters of the 1867 Constitution Act were unmoved by the argument that the substantive criminal law ought to be crafted by each individual province as a means to preserve regional values. They instead assigned the criminal law power to the federal government to better promote legal stability and clarity when the state attempts to deprive a citizen of their liberty. A recently rejuvenated practice of incorporating provincial offences within the definition of criminal offences unfortunately ignores the rationale underlying this division of authority. Do Canadian citizens support their courts, and what factors influence that support? While it is well recognized that public confidence in the judicial branch is crucial for its effective functioning, how to measure and analyze this confidence is debated. This article explores how social scientists conceptualize and study trust and perceptions of legitimacy in courts. Using data from the Canada Election Studies spanning 2008 to 2021 and an original survey conducted in 2023, this article provides an overview of the current state of trust in Canadian courts, the known correlates of confidence, and recommendations for maintaining public support. This paper examines the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Murray-Hall v. Quebéc (Attorney General), upholding Québec’s restrictions on personal cultivation and possession of cannabis despite federal legalization. This decision is contextualized within a broader empirical analysis of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on the criminal law power under section 91(27) of the Constitution Act, 1867. Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 6 (CLN6) is a fatal, autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive/motor impairment, vision loss, as well as neuronal loss and gliosis in the brain, and premature death. Onset typically occurs in childhood. No approved pharmacological treatments exist that halt or reverse disease progression. A novel flupirtine benzyl carbamate was orally administered to male and female Cln6^nclf mice from 4 to 28 weeks of age to evaluate its neuroprotective and antispastic effects. Drug treatment produced significant, sex-dependent phenotypic improvements. Treated mice of both sexes exhibited reduced hindlimb spasticity, but only treated males demonstrated diminution in …

R. v. Zacharias is a complex, and on one important issue inconclusive, decision about the extent of police powers and the balance between individual rights and societal interests. The case decided that the “reasonable grounds” justifying a warrantless arrest could not include any information which had been obtained unlawfully. This rule had been long-established with regard to search warrants but had been the subject of conflicting decisions in lower courts in the case of arrests. Under the Canada-United States Safe Third Country Agreement (“STCA”), Canadian immigration officials return refugee protection claimants arriving from the United States to have their claims determined in that country, and vice versa. This paper tries to tease out the equality rights arguments under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms likely to be advanced in an ongoing constitutional challenge to the STCA and its implementing regulations. The paper briefly explores why equality rights challenges have often been given short shrift in cases involving “migration control”. Registered Nurse (RN) burnout remains a significant challenge in acute care hospitals, with far-reaching consequences for staff well-being, organizational performance, and patient care outcomes. Characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment, burnout among RNs contributes to decreased job satisfaction, increased turnover, and compromised care quality. Despite extensive research on burnout, few studies have integrated theoretical frameworks such as the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) with large-scale, nationally representative data to empirically test how burnout influences organizational engagement and healthcare quality outcomes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a persistent foodborne pathogen capable of surviving in food processing environments, often in association with diverse environmental microflora. This study examines genomic determinants of persistence, specifically stress adaptation and biofilm-associated traits, in environmental Listeria species and other environmental microflora from a dairy processing facility by analyzing whole-genome sequences of 6 environmental Listeria isolates, 4 ATCC reference strains, and 22 air and floor swab cultures, annotated using the RAST platform. Subsystem analysis revealed that Listeria isolates carried a defined set of genes linked to biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, and stress response, though in lower abundance than environmental cultures. …

This paper explores a computational investigation of two classical fluid dynamics problems-lid driven cavity flow and flow around a cylinder- simulated at varying Reynolds numbers using Ansys Fluent (AF) and OpenFOAM (OF).The primary goal is to reproduce and compare the physical flow behavior observed in both solvers under matched boundary conditions, mesh configurations, and fluid properties, rather than to compare solver performance. Simulations for a square cavity case at Reynolds number of 10,100,10000, and for the flow around a cylinder case at Reynolds number of 180 were produced. Low Energy Availability (Lea) And Its Relationship To Nutritional Status And Bone Health In Collegiate Athletes, Anthony Dempsey

This project aims to identify low energy availability in a sample of collegiate athletes and explore the relationship with bone mineral density and nutrient deficiencies. Participants (n=3,407) were recruited from a northeast university and self-reported athlete status and physical activity via online questionnaire. Food records were used to calculate energy and nutrient intake. Anthropometrics including height, weight, body composition and bone mineral status were measured in duplicate. Energy availability (EA) was calculated as (Energy Intake (EI) -Exercising Energy Expenditure) (EEE)) /Fat Free Mass (FFM) (kg) and categorized as optimal (>45 kcal/kg FFM), subclinical, or clinically low (< 30 kcal/kg FFM). Fifteen percent of participants were characterized as athletes (club or division I varsity); mean EA was lower among athletes vs. nonathletes (17.90.7vs.21.90.3, p< .001). Males were more likely to have optimal EA status vs. females (8.8vs4.7%, p< .001). Most females (75.1%) were categorized as clinically LEA; 20.3% had subclinical LEA. Among men, athletes’ EA was similar to nonathletes (21.11.2vs22.20.5, p=.4); among females, athletes had lower EA vs. nonathletes (16.220.9vs21.70.3, p< .001). Males with clinically low EA were most likely to consume inadequate intakes of potassium, fiber, iron, and vitamin D (77.1,94.0,10.4 and 97.3%, respectively); similarly, females with clinically low EA, were most likely to consume inadequate intakes (81.9,87.6,88.3, and 99.5%, respectively). Bone z-scores were higher among athletes vs. non athletes (-.27±.06vs-.67±.02, p< .001) but were not different by EA status. Given the prevalence of LEA within the college athlete and nonathlete populations, further research and tailored nutritional education is needed for this at-risk population.

This project explores how the Impella functions, when it is to be used, and the role of the radiologic technologist in supporting these procedures. AI simultaneously exists as an artifact of engineering design and as autonomous intelligence, creating an observer-participant feedback loop. This paper proposes that embodied AI faces a bandwidth-limited intelligence threshold T_h that it arises from B = min(C_sens,C_Act). However, Shannon capacity measures bits while intelligence operates on concepts, necessitating a dual-channel model separating physical bandwidth B_io from representational capacity B_rep. Estuary mudflats are ecologically sensitive environments that require consistent monitoring. Traditional satellite-based classification workflows are often constrained by the high cost and labor-intensive nature of manual data annotation. This study evaluates the utility of Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM 3), a foundational computer vision model, to automate mudflat segmentation without domain-specific fine-tuning. By leveraging the model’s text-prompting capabilities alongside specialized pre- and post-processing techniques, we generated segmentation masks in a zero-shot framework. Our approach achieved an F1- score of 0.51, demonstrating the inherent challenges of spectrally complex coastal features.
