Developing Design Principles For Multimodal Connection: A Case Study Of The Commerce Bridge Corridor In Dallas, Texas, Panisa Thanpaisarnsamut Jan 2026

Developing Design Principles For Multimodal Connection: A Case Study Of The Commerce Bridge Corridor In Dallas, Texas, Panisa Thanpaisarnsamut

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Downtown Dallas has undergone substantial growth, yet major streets and bridge corridors continue to prioritize vehicular movement, resulting in fragmented and uncomfortable pedestrian environments. This condition is especially evident along the Commerce Bridge corridor, where narrow sidewalks, high traffic volumes, and unclear crossings limit safe and accessible movement between Downtown and West Dallas. Although several parks and public spaces lie in close proximity, the lack of continuous and legible routes prevents these areas from functioning as a connected system.

This thesis investigates how the Commerce Bridge corridor can be transformed into a multimodal connection that supports movement, safety, and user …

Massive Marsh Loss By Failure Mechanism Due To Hurricane Ida Targets Stressed Spartina Patens, G. Mariotti, K. Boswell, N. Matherne, T. Elsey-Quirk Jan 2026

Massive Marsh Loss By Failure Mechanism Due To Hurricane Ida Targets Stressed Spartina Patens, G. Mariotti, K. Boswell, N. Matherne, T. Elsey-Quirk

Faculty Publications

Hurricane Ida made landfall in 2021 as a category 4 over Louisiana (USA), causing massive marsh erosion (gross loss 280 km2, net loss 260 km2) in Barataria Basin, equivalent to about 32 years of marsh loss without hurricanes. Hurricane Ida erosion occurred through whole-scale marsh removal (failure mechanism), as opposed to lateral edge erosion, mostly (56%) in intermediate marshes. When considering all salinity zones, 82% of the total marsh loss occurred in marshes dominated by Sporobolus pumilus (Spartina patens), likely because these marshes were composed of semi-floating blocks, which can be easily lifted and advected away …

Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo Jan 2026

Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Benevolent sexism can be flattering on the surface, though is based on and perpetuates the same stereotypes as hostile sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996; 1997). Research has demonstrated benevolent sexism exposure increases body shame in adult women, however this effect remains largely unexplained. The current study investigated the mediating effects of self-objectification (viewing oneself as an object) and system justification beliefs (believing that society is just and fair) to explain the positive relationship between exposure to benevolent sexism and body shame. Using an experimental paradigm, this study exposed a sample of adult women in the United States (N = 152) …

De Novo Review For Asylum At The Circuit Court Level: Comparing A Stringent Standard Of Review For Asylum Seekers In The U.S. To The European Court Of Human Rights’ Standard, Dani Gómez

Human Rights Brief

On March 14, 2022, an immigration judge (IJ) denied the asylum applications of Douglas Humberto Urias-Orellana, Sayra Iliana Gamez-Mejia, and their child, ordering them removed to El Salvador. Urias-Orellana and his family had been placed in removal proceedings with

the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) and filed applications for asylum.  At the individual merits hearing, the IJ ruled that the threats were “insufficiently menacing” to constitute persecution. The Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) affirmed. On further appeal, the First Circuit denied review, holding that courts may not re-evaluate the conclusions drawn from the factual findings de novo unless “any …

Restoring The Organization For The Security And Cooperation In Europe’S Role In Human Rights And Security After Russian Invasion, Roman Nekoliak Jan 2026

Restoring The Organization For The Security And Cooperation In Europe’S Role In Human Rights And Security After Russian Invasion, Roman Nekoliak

Human Rights Brief

This Article diagnoses a systemic erosion of rights-based multilateralism driven by geopolitical realignment, reduced leadership by traditional human rights defenders, the rise of authoritarian coalitions, and the growth of transactional and securitized diplomacy. This Article argues that revitalizing the Organization for the Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) around a rights-centered, cross-dimensional concept of security is essential to restoring both regional stability and the credibility of international human rights commitments. It places the war in Ukraine within broader patterns of democratic backsliding, institutional paralysis, and the rise of authoritarian governance, demonstrating how domestic repression and interstate aggression mutually reinforce one …

Comparative Finite Element Method-Based Optimisation Of Coir Fibre Laminates: Aluminium Skins Versus Carbon Cloth Skins, Muhamed Swaleh Ahmed, Bernard Wamuti Ikua, Abel Nyakundi Mayaka Jan 2026

Comparative Finite Element Method-Based Optimisation Of Coir Fibre Laminates: Aluminium Skins Versus Carbon Cloth Skins, Muhamed Swaleh Ahmed, Bernard Wamuti Ikua, Abel Nyakundi Mayaka

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Natural fibre composites offer a sustainable alternative to conventional composite materials. Their mechanical efficiency is influenced by laminate structure and skin material selection. This study presents a comparative finite element analysis and optimisation of coir fibre-reinforced laminates employing either aluminium skins or carbon cloth skins. COMSOL Multiphysics was used to determine their mechanical response. Optimisation was performed using the BOBYQA algorithm to enhance load sharing between the coir core and skin materials. Results indicated that aluminium-skinned laminates achieve superior compressive and flexural performance, achieving a peak compressive strength of 210 MPa and sustaining a flexural load of 0.65 kN at …

Elli’S Liquid Flow In A Wavy Channel With Slip Effect, Wall Properties, And Heat Transfer, P. Devaki, Yatin Sood Jan 2026

Elli’S Liquid Flow In A Wavy Channel With Slip Effect, Wall Properties, And Heat Transfer, P. Devaki, Yatin Sood

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The dual behavior of Elli’s fluid motivated us to work on it. The fluid behaves as both Newtonian/ non-Newtonian based on the low and high shear rates, respectively. The paper focused on the flow of Ellis fluid in a peristaltic channel with wall properties and heat transfer. The channel is symmetric in nature, and slip conditions are considered near the elastic walls. The governing equations of the flow are solved analytically using suitable boundary conditions, which yield velocity and temperature functions. The novelty of the paper is to analyze the nature of Newtonian/non-Newtonian fluids under the same conditions so that …

Legacy Phosphorus Dynamics In Subtropical River Sediments: Impacts Of Dredging And Water Column Aeration Status, Lee Potter, John R. White Jan 2026

Legacy Phosphorus Dynamics In Subtropical River Sediments: Impacts Of Dredging And Water Column Aeration Status, Lee Potter, John R. White

Faculty Publications

Excessive loading of phosphorus (P) in coastal systems has been a growing concern for watershed managers due to the link with harmful algal blooms. In particular, legacy P creates a persistent challenge for eutrophication management in a range of aquatic systems, including wetlands, lakes, and estuaries, as a source of indirect, internal P loading. Following reductions in external P loads, internal sediment sources have been known to release bioavailable P back into the water column, undermining nutrient restoration goals. This study investigates the flux dynamics and longevity of sediment legacy P in three subtropical rivers—Amite, Tangipahoa, and Tickfaw—draining into the …

Increasing Wave Heights In The Gulf Of Mexico Driven By Swell Waves, Jesbin George, Matthew Hiatt, Clinton S. Willson Jan 2026

Increasing Wave Heights In The Gulf Of Mexico Driven By Swell Waves, Jesbin George, Matthew Hiatt, Clinton S. Willson

Faculty Publications

This study analyzes the climatology, spatial and temporal trends of wind speeds and significant wave height (Hs) of combined wind-seas and swells and Hs of separated swells and wind-seas on annual and seasonal scales in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) using 50 years of atmospheric reanalysis data. The Hs data showed strong agreement with in-situ measurements, with minimal bias (+/-< 0.08 m) and high correlation (r > 0.9) across both deep and shallow regions, although a slight underestimation is noted for wind speed data. Wind speeds showed seasonal variability in the GoM, though they did not exhibit significant long-term increases, except for a notable decrease (~ -1.0 …
