The bilingual FAIRmaterials package simplifies the creation and visualization of materials and data science ontologies. FAIRmaterials, available in the Python and R languages, addresses the complexities associated with traditional ontology editors based on manual user input such as Protege (Musen, 2015) with an intuitive workflow and easy-to-use templates, making it accessible to users both experienced and inexperienced with ontologies. The FAIRmaterials package is its ability to programatically convert simple and structured CSV inputs into rich, well-defined ontologies. Citrus canker, caused by bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), affects the citrus industry by making the fruit unmarketable due to unsightly lesions on the fruit. Citrus canker caused by a relatively new AWstrain of Xcc was reported on the citrus trees in the residential areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of South Texas. Xcc AW has a limited host range, predominantly affecting limes and a few other citrus species. Previous work has reported prevailing environmental conditions that influence the incidence and spread of the citrus canker caused by the Asiatic A strain. However, no information is available …

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Ground beetle (Carabidae) species diversity and spatial distribution were surveyed  across five habitat types along an elevational gradient on Davraz Mountain, a  biogeographical transition area in southwestern Türkiye. The analyses showed that  habitat heterogeneity—particularly soil moisture and texture—exerts a stronger  influence on carabid diversity than elevation. Sørensen’s and Jaccard similarity  indices showed strong faunal overlap between some sampling areas, while  multivariate principal components and canonical correspondence analyses verified  distinct environmental gradients influencing community structure. Diversity indices  indicated varying levels of species richness and evenness across sampling areas.  The data highlight the importance of fine-scaled habitat features in driving ground  beetle …

The common sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is an invasive fish found in Siberian  water bodies, the trophic interactions and impact on local ecosystems of which  remain poorly understood. Traditional diet analyses are limited by the mechanical  damage to the prey. For the present study, therefore, we employed DNA  metabarcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) gene to analyze the digestive  tract contents of the common sunbleak obtained from Irkutsk Reservoir. Our analysis  revealed 53 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with sequences of amphibiotic  insects (58.66%) and fish (34.10%) being the most prevalent. Freshwater mussels are facing an increasing need for conservation due to their declining populations. More data is needed on mussel distributions, especially in tributaries of large rivers to properly conserve and restore populations. Big Shoal Creek and Little Shoal Creek are two upland-tributaries of the Arkansas River (Lake Dardanelle) in which no records exist for freshwater mussel populations. We addressed this knowledge gap by sampling a total of 9 sites in Little Shoal Creek and 18 sites in Big Shoal Creek to determine the abundance and distribution of mussels in these streams. Despite significant advancement in cancer treatments, therapies with minimal toxicity to healthy cells are still limited. One targetable weakness of cancer cells is their sensitivity to oxidative stress. We find that the combination of two antioxidants—the common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and a manganese porphyrin in clinical trials, MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+ (MnBuOE)—increases oxidative stress and causes apoptotic death in several cancer cell lines, but not in mouse primary fibroblasts. Investigating the mechanism of cell death, MnBuOE is observed to catalyze the oxidation of tBHQ, producing the electrophilic quinone tert-butylquinone (tBQ). A critical role for tBQ and its electrophilic character was revealed with …

The gravitational wave signal produced by the merger of two compact objects includes both an oscillatory transient and a nonoscillatory part, the so-called memory effect. This produces a permanent displacement of test masses and has not yet been measured. We use general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, including neutrinos, with several representative viable equations of state, to quantify—for the first time—the effects of the neutron star magnetic field, neutrino emission, and the ejected mass on the linear and nonlinear displacement memory in binary neutron star mergers. Designing efficient mechanisms for moving mechanical assemblies requires the use of materials with well-defined mechanical responses. Appropriate methods are needed to characterize these mechanical responses. Mechanical characterization of soft materials is critical in the high strain rate regime where intuition from manipulating a material at low rates fails to translate to applications including impact protection, tire traction, and sound damping. Here, transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) is used to measure wave propagation for soft elastomers and hydrogels. TGS is a non-destructive and non-contact optoacoustic technique that enables high strain rate measurements of the bulk modulus, a measure of a material's resistance …

Lead halide perovskites (APbX₃) have demonstrated exceptional opto-electronic properties, but their inherent toxicity and environmental hazards hindered their practical deployment in display technologies such as liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights. Herein, we report for the first time a facile, water-mediated synthesis of red-emitting CsMnBr₃ thin films from an aqueous solution of CsBr and MnBr₂ precursors at a low temperature of ∼50 °C. Unlike traditional synthesis routes reported for synthesis of CsMnBr₃ powders or nanocrystals, relying heavily on toxic solvents, high temperatures, or inert atmospheres, the green approach utilizes water as a benign medium to facilitate …

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. While quantum measurements have been shown to constitute a resource for operating quantum thermal machines, the nature of the energy exchanges involved in the interaction between system and measuring apparatus is still under debate. In this work, we show that a microscopic model of the apparatus is necessary to unambiguously determine whether quantum measurements provide energy in the form of heat or work. We illustrate this result by considering a measurement-based refrigerator, made of a double quantum dot embedded in a two-terminal device, with the charge of one of the dots being continuously monitored. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading global cause of mortality, notably affecting postmenopausal women. Hormonal fluctuations during menopause contribute to dyslipidemia, fostering cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study explored lipid profiles among postmenopausal Pakistani women, focusing on the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and its association with CHD.

The data consisted of surveys from 265 women aged between 40–70 years. A STEP-wise approach, using a questionnaire from the World Health Organization, was employed for data collection. This quantitative cross-sectional study, guided by the socioecological model, examined links between AIP, age, lipid profiles, and hypertension. The AIP’s association with CHD was …

BACKGROUND: Due to widespread shortages of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds during the 2022–2023 respiratory virus surge, a protocol was implemented to identify and manage patients on high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in a pediatric observation unit (POU). This study aims to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients who received HFNC in the observation unit.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients admitted to a community pediatric observation unit who received HFNC between October 2022 and January 2023. Mexican American caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease face unique stressors and challenges, which may be influenced by cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic factors. This population often assumes caregiving responsibilities based on strong cultural values of familismo which emphasizes family duty and collective care. However, this commitment can lead to increased emotional strain, mental health concerns, financial and physical strain, particularly when caregivers have limited access to healthcare resources, financial support, or respite. Just over half of New Hampshire residents support extending the recently expired Obamacare subsidies and nearly half of residents would support instituting a national "single-payer" health care system. Granite Staters are divided along partisan lines on whether to expand or repeal Obamacare. Most Granite Staters say that medical costs have increased in the past year and nearly one-third say someone in their household has postponed getting health care due to cost. A majority disapprove of President Trump's handling of healthcare and Granite Staters are even more negative about the performance of Congress on the issue.
