This report analyzes how gender-based killings is a growing topic within the feminist community of New York and Mexico City and how the use of the right terminology is essential to understand the scope of the problem. I worked for 18 months with the feminist community in both cities and the term ‘femicide’ came over and over in the interviews Femicide, how it is referred in the rest of the world, is the intentional killing of women or girls because they are female, and it is a growing epidemic in the U.S. and in Mexico. I interviewed more than 40 …

After years of fighting for the right to earn compensation from their athletics talents, more college teams than ever before are being eliminated due to budget concerns with universities and athletic departments.
This has been further amplified as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of revenue from shutdowns and cancellations in 2020. Athletes in non-revenue earning sports account for well over 90% of all NIL and they are now at risk of losing the opportunity to compete …

The purpose of the analysis is to determine how public transit ridership has changed in New York City and whether the MTA was on track to pre-pandemic levels. A growing number of entrepreneurs (often young, frequently queer or people of color) are trying to change a restaurant industry from within by opening up their own businesses. HAGS, an upcoming queer-focused fine-dining restaurant and Daughter, a community-focused cafe in Brooklyn are just the newest of these socially-minded ventures popping up across the country. These spaces are committed to creating equitable spaces, addressing toxic restaurant and workplace cultures and are frequently tied to larger social issues like food insecurity, zero-waste initiatives or in the case of HAGS, queer representation. But these new business owners are fighting an entrenched system and …

Diabetic Education In An Uninsured Patient Population, Amanda Whistler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
Patient education is an important factor in the management of Type 2 Diabetes. Successful outcomes can be causally related to proper patient education. Many times, patients are left with more questions than answers about their newly diagnosed condition. Some groups of patients are affected by prediabetes and diabetes more than other groups. Differences in health status or access to health care among racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic groups are referred to as health disparities. This is a major concern in the United States for health care providers.
A spreadsheet was used to record the blood glucose levels of each …

Implementation Of A Risk Assessment Tool To Increase Screening For Extragenital Gonorrhea And Chlamydia In Men Who Have Sex With Men, Andrew P. Tharp
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
INTRODUCTION: Gonorrhea and chlamydia account for the majority of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States and are often thought to infect only the urogenital tract. Infections can also be harbored at extragenital sites (rectum and oropharynx), and these infections can increase susceptibility to HIV. Extragenital screening recommendations exist for populations deemed high risk, including men who have sex with men (MSM); yet, routine screening is not consistently completed.
PURPOSE: To improve screening rates for extragenital gonorrhea and chlamydia in MSM within a primary care setting by using an STI risk assessment tool.
METHODS: Clinicians completed a baseline knowledge …

Short Term Medical Mission Antibiotic Protocol, Greg Jennings
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background/Introduction: Short term medical mission trips are growing in popularity and with this growth the level of care provided must remain evidenced based. Mission groups traveling to developing countries consist primarily of volunteers. And while many of those serving on mission trips are medically trained, some have minimal healthcare knowledge. Pharmacists are not always available to dispense medications on mission trips and therefore it is common for registered nurses in the pharmacy to dispense the medications prescribed by the providers. Because the medications available on mission trips are limited, often times substitutions must be made, especially when it comes …

Improving Access To Reproductive Life Planning Following Implementation Of One Key Question® In Practice, Ashley Wittler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
Inadequate reproductive life planning (RLP) education is a widespread problem for women in the United States. This deficit leaves women without necessary guidance regarding contraceptive choices and maximizing pre-conception health. Use of RLP is endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Lack of use of an RLP tool in a large, multi-site obstetrical and gynecological practice located in the Metro East is an issue that greatly impacts the patient population. The goal was to initiate the use of an evidence-based RLP tool, known as One Key Question®. The use …

Probing The Role Of Astrocytes In The Pathology Of Fragile X Syndrome With Human Stem Cells, Baiyan Ren
Probing The Role Of Astrocytes In The Pathology Of Fragile X Syndrome With Human Stem Cells, Baiyan Ren
Theses & Dissertations
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder related to intellectual disability and the most common monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder. FXS is mainly caused by an expansion of CGG repeats in the 5’-untranslated region of fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene, leading to the loss of expression of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP). Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in the central nervous system (CNS). Loss of FMRP in astrocytes has been found to contribute to structural and functional synaptic deficits in the Fmr1-KO mouse model. The contribution of human astrocytes, however, to the …

The significant challenge towards a successful HIV cure lies in eradicating persistent viral reservoirs across diverse tissue niches. As a result, HIV-infected individuals have to resort to lifelong antiretroviral therapy. Recent news of supposed HIV eradication in a second patient has further re-invigorated the fields of HIV cure. However, a few barriers remain, such as the lack of currently available assays to accurately quantify viral reservoirs, limited information on cellular factors associated with persistence, and varied dynamics of the viral reservoir in various body compartments. Lastly, HIV-infected individuals live different lifestyles stemming from comorbid substance abuse including consumption of morphine, …

Sir, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), otherwise known as ecstasy, is an illicit drug which is consumed for recreational use. Patients may first present to their primary care practitioners before being referred acutely onwards to an oral and maxillofacial surgery or oral medicine department for further investigations and management, which has been our experience here in a secondary care setting. I would like to raise awareness about these oral manifestations and the management options that can be provided.Xerostomia can occur which should subside after approximately 48 hours. …
