‘Conserere Sapientiam’, To Engage In Wisdom: The Rhetoric Of Philosophical Debate And The Speech Of Caecilius In Minucius Felix’S Octavius, Evan Rw Dutmer Dec 2021

‘Conserere Sapientiam’, To Engage In Wisdom: The Rhetoric Of Philosophical Debate And The Speech Of Caecilius In Minucius Felix’S Octavius, Evan Rw Dutmer

New England Classical Journal

Here I will elucidate both the rhetorical and philosophical significance of the introduction to Minucius Felix’s Octavius—in effect, to give voice to what Minucius Felix hoped to do in having Caecilius and Octavius conserere sapientiam (‘engage in wisdom’). I draw special attention to the introduction to the dialogue because (i) Minucius’ rhetorical care in establishing an appropriate otium (in other words, a locus amoenus) for his dialogue participants has been underappreciated (ii) because Caecilius’ arguments have, in general, been given short-shrift, and, (iii) because the view that the introductory parts should, instead, be read with suspicion has found a recent …

Localizing Early Epic Material In Pindar’S Sicilian Odes: Epichoric Concerns And Panhellenic Fame, Vasiliki Kousoulini

New England Classical Journal

Pindar’s Sicilian odes composed for Hieron and Chromius are embellished with various mythological narratives that are also encountered in early epic material. I suggest that Pindar not only localizes - to some extent - these originally Panhellenic mythological narratives in order to embed them in the foundation narratives that he constructs for the Sicilian victors but that the poet creates a complex interplay between epichoric and Panhellenic elements within the context of the Sicilian odes. In this way, Pindar creates for Hieron and his newly-founded city a mythical past and legitimizes his right to rule before the eyes of local …

Baghdad Science Journal

Cloud Computing is a mass platform to serve high volume data from multi-devices and numerous technologies. Cloud tenants have a high demand to access their data faster without any disruptions. Therefore, cloud providers are struggling to ensure every individual data is secured and always accessible. Hence, an appropriate replication strategy capable of selecting essential data is required in cloud replication environments as the solution. This paper proposed a Crucial File Selection Strategy (CFSS) to address poor response time in a cloud replication environment. A cloud simulator called CloudSim is used to conduct the necessary experiments, and results are presented to …

Impact Of Denial-Of-Service Attack On Directional Compact Geographic Forwarding Routing Protocol In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nasrina M Samir, Maisarah Musni, Zurina Mohd Hanapi, Mohamed Ridzal Radzuan

Baghdad Science Journal

Directional Compact Geographic Forwarding (DCGF) routing protocol promises a minimal overhead generation by utilizing a smart antenna and Quality of Service (QoS) aware aggregation. However, DCGF was tested only in the attack-free scenario without involving the security elements. Therefore, an investigation was conducted to examine the routing protocol algorithm whether it is secure against attack-based networks in the presence of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack. This analysis on DoS attack was carried out using a single optimal attacker, A1, to investigate the impact of DoS attack on DCGF in a communication link. The study showed that DCGF does not perform efficiently in …

Fast Processing Rna-Seq On Multicore Processor, Lee Jia Bin, Nor Asilah Wati Abdul Hamid, Zurita Ismail, Mohamed Faris Laham

Baghdad Science Journal

RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq) is the sequencing and analysis of transcriptomes. The main purpose of RNA-Seq analysis is to find out the presence and quantity of RNA in an experimental sample under a specific condition. Essentially, RNA raw sequence data was massive. It can be as big as hundreds of Gigabytes (GB). This massive data always makes the processing time become longer and take several days. A multicore processor can speed up a program by separating the tasks and running the tasks’ errands concurrently. Hence, a multicore processor will be a suitable choice to overcome this problem. Therefore, this study aims …

An Experimental Study Of The Server-Based Unfairness Solutions For The Cross-Protocol Scenario Of Adaptive Streaming Over Http/3 And Http/2, Chanh Minh Tran, Tho Nguyen Duc, Phan Xuan Tan, Eiji Kamioka Dec 2021

An Experimental Study Of The Server-Based Unfairness Solutions For The Cross-Protocol Scenario Of Adaptive Streaming Over Http/3 And Http/2, Chanh Minh Tran, Tho Nguyen Duc, Phan Xuan Tan, Eiji Kamioka

Baghdad Science Journal

Since the introduction of the HTTP/3, research has focused on evaluating its influences on the existing adaptive streaming over HTTP (HAS). Among these research, due to irrelevant transport protocols, the cross-protocol unfairness between the HAS over HTTP/3 (HAS/3) and HAS over HTTP/2 (HAS/2) has caught considerable attention. It has been found that the HAS/3 clients tend to request higher bitrates than the HAS/2 clients because the transport QUIC obtains higher bandwidth for its HAS/3 clients than the TCP for its HAS/2 clients. As the problem originates from the transport layer, it is likely that the server-based unfairness solutions can help …

Effective Solution Of University Course Timetabling Using Particle Swarm Optimizer Based Hyper Heuristic Approach, Zahid Iqbal, Rafia Ilyas, Huah Yong Chan, Naveed Ahmed

Baghdad Science Journal

The university course timetable problem (UCTP) is typically a combinatorial optimization problem. Manually achieving a useful timetable requires many days of effort, and the results are still unsatisfactory. unsatisfactory. Various states of art methods (heuristic, meta-heuristic) are used to satisfactorily solve UCTP. However, these approaches typically represent the instance-specific solutions. The hyper-heuristic framework adequately addresses this complex problem. This research proposed Particle Swarm Optimizer-based Hyper Heuristic (HH PSO) to solve UCTP efficiently. PSO is used as a higher-level method that selects low-level heuristics (LLH) sequence which further generates an optimal solution. The proposed approach generates solutions into two phases (initial …

Heavy transition-metal tetraborides (e.g., tungsten tetraboride, molybdenum tetraboride, and molybdenum-doped tungsten tetraboride) exhibit superior mechanical properties, but solving their complex crystal structures has been a long-standing challenge. Recent experimental x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first-principles structural searches have identified a complex structure model for tungsten tetraboride that contains a boron trimer as an unusual structural unit with a stoichiometry of 1:4.2. In this paper, we expand the study to binary MoB4.2 and ternary W1-xMoxB4.2 (x=0.0-1.0) compounds to assess their thermodynamic stability and mechanical properties using a tailor-designed crystal structure search method in conjunction with first-principles energetic calculations. Our …

What’S With Caesar And The Third Person In The Gallic Wars?, Ruth Breindel Dec 2021

What’S With Caesar And The Third Person In The Gallic Wars?, Ruth Breindel

New England Classical Journal

While we say that the Gallic Wars were written by Caesar, they were really written by the scribes. The thesis of this paper is that they used the third person singular to refer to Caesar, since they were taking down dictation and would not use “I/we,” as they were not the ones who had done the action. This use of the third person is attested to in Greek authors, and Caesar obviously was pleased with how it sounded; while he had the last word on the subject, it’s the scribes who deserve the credit for style.

Developing A Plan For A More Diverse, Inclusive, And Equitable Library At A Research 1 Land-Grant University, Jonathan S. Briganti, Brittany Dodson, Inga Haugen, Gail Mcmillan, Ronald Mecham, Andrea L. Ogier, Shannon Phillips, Anthony Wright De Hernandez

Library Diversity and Residency Studies

Using the Virginia Tech strategic plan as a guide, a team of its University Libraries faculty and staff designed a strategic planning approach for the library that directly engaged with University goals and explored two areas: 1) contributing to the equity-, diversity-, and inclusion-related (EDI) goals laid out in the University strategic plan, and 2) expanding upon efforts to broaden diversity and representation in the library. The team identified four major themes: accessibility, climate, employment and professional development, outreach, and advocacy, and used these themes to develop specific recommendations. The process served to shine the light on these topics within …
