The power struggle between the Justice Development Party (AKP) and the military in Turkey has been crucial in Turkey's bid for democratic consolidation. In the past, the military as a guardian of the Kemalist establishment has intervened four times in Turkey's domestic politics ousting elected civilian governments with the justification of safeguarding the secular and unitary nature of the Turkish Republic. After each intervention, the military reshaped the political system and expanded its legal-constitutional prerogatives at the expense of the civilian authorities' in decision-making autonomy- halting the establishment of a fully-fledged democracy based on complete civilian control over the military. …

The Red Sea harbors a number of deep-sea brine pools with diverse chemical, physical, and geological conditions. One of the environments, the Atlantis II Brine Pool, is unique to the Red Sea. The deepest part of Atlantis II Brine Pool â the Lower Convective Layer (LCL) â is 2060 meters below the sea surface water, with 26% salinity, and a temperature of about 68 °C. Moreover, it is almost anoxic, and contains a very high concentration of heavy metals. Cellulolytic enzymes have many industrial applications and play a major role in the process of biofuel production. Bioethanol is a cheap and clean alternative to non-renewable, polluting and expensive fossil fuel. Cellulases and hemicellulases act synergistically to degrade the cellulose polymer into glucose which can then be fermented by specific anaerobic organisms into ethanol. The overall manufacturing process occurs under harsh conditions such as low pH, high temperature and in the presence of elevated salt concentrations. In an attempt to find better cancer treatments, a new mathematical model proposed by Klika & Marsik (2009) suggests that more cancer cells could possibly be killed by applying several stress factors to tumour cells, however only as a simulation in silico. The proposed stresses include healthy cell anti-tumour effect, the biochemical effect exerted by a cytotoxic drug and a newly introduced mechanical stress. The hypothesis entails that upon applying these three stress factors together simultaneously to tumour cells, the concentration of the tumour cells decreases more than if a stress factor was applied alone. The Atlantis II deep is the largest brine pool in the Red Sea of around 60 km2. It is located in the central Red Sea (21° 21' N., 38° 04' E.) at a depth of 2200 meters from the sea surface. The lower part of this pool, the lower convective layer (LCL), has extremely harsh environmental conditions characterized by a temperature of up to 68°C, pH 5.3, saturated salt (252 psu), anoxic condition, and high concentration of heavy metals. These harsh abiotic factors exert strong selective pressure in favor of microbial communities adapted to survive in such environment. Therefore, proteins …

Islamic inheritance law excludes orphaned grandchildren from inheriting a share of their grandparent's estate in the event of surviving uncles and aunts under the rule that the nearer in degree excludes the more remote. For centuries, this prohibition has prevented orphaned grandchildren from inheriting a share of their grandparent's estate. Mediaeval Islamic juridical treatises claimed that inheritance law's provisions are the final dictate of God and their authority cannot be questioned. This thesis will analyze the policy of cross-strait rapprochement and negotiation that the administration of Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has pursued with mainland China in relation to Taiwan's de facto sovereign independent status. The initial focus of this thesis will be on the evolution of Taiwan's political identity in the broader historical context of its relationship with China and the One China principle. This will include an analysis of the US-Taiwan relationship and Taiwan's position in international institutions. I will then analyze the Ma administration's China policies, dialogues, and agreements. People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
This research aimed to quantitatively explore various elements related to people living with companion animals during the COVID-19 emergency lockdown in Puerto Rico. Among the variables studied are guardians’ gender, age, animal species, time spent per day with the companion animal, perceived benefits, and attachment level between the person and their companion animal. Matters related to emergency preparedness plans regarding companion animals, changes in the human- animal interactions, and perceived companion animals’ changes during the lockdown were analyzed.
